Missing a trick - I would have thought they could raise a few extra quid by just offering this irrespective of all 2nd class seats being taken for a small token payment, instead of this almost pointless "upgrade scheme" that probably benefits very few expectant mums "lucky" enough to be travelling on a busy commuter route in rush hour.
In Belgium pregnant women get free upgrades to 1st on any train, empty or full.
I'd respect this offering if it didn't include the "if all standard seats full" bit. As it stands it's just a PR stunt...women in their 3rd trimester who've jumped through all the application hoops then checked all the standard carriages (without someone offering them a seat) may sit in first class...very kind
No this is a myth - although the driver can declassify first class (effectively making it 2nd class) on some busy trains if they choose to but this will be announced.
Isn't there a rule that ANYBODY can sit in 1st class if there are no seats left in 2nd class? If a seat becomes available you need to go back through.
