Free First Class Upgrade (if Standard Class is Full) for Expectant Mums - South Western Railway

Missing a trick - I would have thought they could raise a few extra quid by just offering this irrespective of all 2nd class seats being taken for a small token payment, instead of this almost pointless "upgrade scheme" that probably benefits very few expectant mums "lucky" enough to be travelling on a busy commuter route in rush hour.

Zack14

In Belgium pregnant women get free upgrades to 1st on any train, empty or full.

benslatz

I'd respect this offering if it didn't include the "if all standard seats full" bit. As it stands it's just a PR stunt...women in their 3rd trimester who've jumped through all the application hoops then checked all the standard carriages (without someone offering them a seat) may sit in first class...very kind

Athia

No this is a myth - although the driver can declassify first class (effectively making it 2nd class) on some busy trains if they choose to but this will be announced.

paully

Isn't there a rule that ANYBODY can sit in 1st class if there are no seats left in 2nd class? If a seat becomes available you need to go back through.

Agreed. Anyone who voluntarily travels on SW trains needs their head examined. As a long suffering 'customer' I can first hand testify to the contempt they have for the traveler. Overpriced, late, strike-ridden, they are a model of incompetence. They even distributed a customer survey a couple of weeks ago ( 0 to all questions). The question they should have asked is, "do you think the franchise should be withdrawn from SW trains" My memory of British Rail is somewhat hazy but they could not be worse than the current group of half-wits.

deeboy

Thanks OP I was a bit sceptical but you’re right they are much lower than usual! Grabbed returns to Portsmouth and Bournemouth 👏

randomdeal

Thanks. Great offer. Got return tickets from London Waterloo to Portsmouth - £4.45 each way.

Newbold

What an absurd notion. We have a government with a Secretary of State for Transport, Failing Grayling, who's abrogated all responsibility for the railways and just tries to pretend all the rail problems across the country are someone else's fault. And the East Coast Main Line's littered with a series of failed private operators who gave up the franchise. If Corbyn gets in we'll see some sanity return, with a truly national railway system for the first time since the last one was wrecked, and we'll also, I hope, see an end to the system which requires you to book tickets 12 weeks in advance to get an affordable fare. Our railways are the laughing stock of Europe, if not the world.

some good news from SWR, for once.

crow99

The wearing uniform outside of active duty is a relic from The Troubles. As someone references it’s all risk based. You wouldn’t do it in Baghdad but Andover is fine. Good gesture for our Armed Forces. Although individuals with a MoD 90 should just get free travel in my opinion

Delbert.Grady

Its been cancelled, from the South Western Railway website; RMT industrial action planned for this date has been cancelled. We plan to run a full service on this day subject to engineering works.

smartypants71

In Andover I see people in uniform in our Asda, Sainsbury's, Waitrose & Tesco all the time. The British Army HQ is west of the town at Marlborough Lines and I'm sure they are not on duty or en-route to a military base when shopping for their bacon or Sauvignon Blanc (lol)

DingoDirk

This is almost okay if you are lucky enough to live near one of the very few eligible stations - mostly end of line terminus stations. It's an unimaginative and lazy resurrection of the Stagecoach/SWT Mega Train (or whatever it was called) deal. It's a terrible shame that this network still won't provide a sensibly priced advance ticket purchase system for people who travel occasionally and can't afford the obscene rip off fares.

This is actually a pretty good offer, despite the negative comments above. For example normally to London a Super Off-Peak Day Return from Bournemouth is £50.90, Southampton is £37.90, from Winchester is £32.60 etc etc. Plus these promotional tickets have the same validity as Off-Peak Day Returns, rather than the more restrictive *Super* Off-Peak Day Return fares that I quoted above.

It's within the passenger charter. Try it.... Walk from one end or the train to the other. If it's full and only first is available sit there. If the conductor comes and put the onus on him/her to find you a seat in standard... It's their job after all.

A must buy for all the pregnant men and women

Rybo75

I was working on South Western trains, when a lady who claimed she was pregnant, requested her free 1st class upgrade. I asked for her to prove that she was indeed with child, to which she invited me to "feel the baby kick". In hindsight, I now realise she meant on the outside. I no longer work for South Western trains, but am considering a career in Gynaecology.

skizz_b

Please do that on a South Eastern Railway train and enjoy your fine...trains aren't declassified just because they are busy. On SE Railway they are declassified where they are short formed (i.e. are booked to be formed of 8 coaches and turn up with 4) or there was a cancellation and the next train is overly busy (i.e. carrying two lots of passengers rather than one).

Yes just seen that as I tried to book for 20th Feb, but have moved it forward a week :)

Glh74

This is just a heads up but Can I just point out that regarding the mega train tickets they are point to point meaning you CAN NOT break your journey or start or end it at a more convenient station to you, in other words you cannot purchase it starting at Waterloo but because you live at clapham you'll jump on and off the train there instead. It doesn't work like that and people often get offended when they are given a penalty fare which is double the single fare for that journey so could easily be in the £100's depending on time of day. It is clearly stated in a pop up window that you must start and end your journey stated on the ticket and you click OK to agree to this.

mk-donald

Don't overlook that SOME SWT routes are included on the Megatrain site with cheap Advance type fares available, (sometimes from as little as £1 for totally antisocial hours trains). https://uk.megabus.com/megatrain.aspx Nowadays they seem to try to keep their overall route diagram a secret, though MoneySavingExpert republished an OLD diagram [ie routes may not still be current!] to give you SOME idea http://images4.moneysavingexpert.com/images/megatrain-map-v2.png

It was half this price last year! I.e. £10 per adult and £5 per child. It was very busy! But rather than cope with the same level of demand this year by increasing the numbers of trains and train carriages they appear to be reducing the demand instead by doubling the price! **EDIT** correction: I paid £15 per ticket last year not £10. http://www.connectingwiltshire.co.uk/news-events/south-west-trains-summer-ticket-offer/ Also, that deal ran from 26th July - 22nd August. They're running the same deal this year, on the same dates, for the same price http://www.southwesttrains.co.uk/swsummerlaunched.aspx It's also valid 7 days a week this year not just weekends as it was last year. So that will be a hot deal! As for the strike comment though. I've commuted to London daily from Basingstoke for the last 4 years (using South West Trains). In that time period the company has never been on strike - so we have to give them credit for that.
