Excellent product. Good price, although has been slightly cheaper recently
Isn't the Spear and Jackson name owned by Home Bargains now? Not the reliable brand it once was.

No it is worse than that

conversation.which.co.uk/hom…ng/

Two big names in gardening tools – Spear & Jackson and Qualcast – have both sold licences to the Home Retail Group (Argos and Homebase).

This means that Argos and Homebase can use these prestigious brand names on their own-brand products. Not only that, but the companies that own the two brands continue to make and sell their own products through Argos and Homebase.

In other words, if you buy, for example, a Qualcast mower at Argos or Homebase, it may not be made by Qualcast. In fact Qualcast may not have had anything to do with the product – but it will bear its name.
Never Bend eh; since I managed to bend one of their (supposedly) SS shafted forks, I doubt if these hand tools would survive a year with me.

right, so you didn't supply all the info
so anywhere that they dont have a licencing deal with should be ok?
guess finding those places is the problem

I think they just werent designed to take the leverage a 2m tall, built like a BSH man can exert on them. It would probably survive these days, as I am weak as a kitten and have really bad shoulders and knees (and ankles and back).

Knowledge is power if people are happy to think they have the real thing, then good luck to em, personally I feel the practice of badge engineering utterly deceitful and defies all logic to the brand themselves. When I posted this I did not think it was a secret.

If you do further reading on the matter you'll find this only applies to petrol and electrical items, and that all hand tools are still made by Spear & Jackson. Also Spear & Jackson don't list mowers and such like on their website so it's kind of self evident.

This is a good set by the way, I got the wife it for her birthday and she swears by them

Of course:

google.es/amp…p=1

And

bitterwallet.com/new…611

And

insightdiy.co.uk/new…htm

The latter two quoting the original Which? report in the first link, published two days after the one in your link so presumably after they gained clarification from the manufacturers.

EDIT: I never said they didn't use the agreements and I can't for the life of me figure out how you managed to interpret that from what I said.
You presented a report saying S&J granted HRG a licensing deal- which they did- then followed it up with your own interpretation of what this deal included. That's not fact, that's your opinion based on what you read in the report, which didn't make any reference to hand tools whatsoever.

You have not answered why they signed an agreement which means nobody knows what you buying, the agreements exist, companies did not apply for them because it was a warm day, they applied to mislead the public into making people think they are buying a reputation but buying pound stock in pretty wrappers with faux logos,.
