With all this time to spare i've been looking to get some tools to get the garden in order and came across this one at Argos which seems decent for the price. I'm not expert but it seems some of the functions could be really useful for cutting up to borders and edging.

This Spear & Jackson 450W 28cm grass trimmer is ideal for cutting fine to long and coarse grass in medium to large gardens. With this 3-in-1 grass trimmer you can change the angle of the cutting head easily with the foot-pedal adjustment; so you can edge, trim and reach under objects such as benches and trampolines. For accuracy while edging, a wheel supports the weight of the trimmer.

The flower guard lets you cut right up to the edge of your garden while protecting your flowers and plants. This grass trimmer has been designed with comfort in mind, featuring an adjustable front handle and telescopic shaft to adjust the trimmer to suit your height.

Should the line break the auto feed spool system will dispense extra line automatically. 2 spools of line included. The 10m cable length will reduce the need for an extension cable.

For extra peace of mind Spear & Jackson offer a 3-year guarantee on all Garden Power products.

  • Model number: S4528ET
  • 450 watts.
  • Edging facility.
  • Cutting width 28cm.
  • Corded 10m cable.
  • Auto line feed - feeds out of the reel automatically.
  • Dual line feed - ideal for overgrown areas.
  • Soft grip rotating handle.
  • Telescopic shaft - enables you to adjust the length of the shaft to suit your height.

I have this and the auto line feed is terrible, unless I am doing …I have this and the auto line feed is terrible, unless I am doing something wrong! It either does not feed and I have to stop every 10 seconds or it over feeds and the extra line gets caught

I think all strimmers are the same In that respect 10 minutes strimming, 40 minutes re cording it

do you need to use branded spools or will any work?
I was looking forward to this but it's understandable that my order was cancelled & refunded because there's no store to collect it from.

To be honest every strimmer I have ever had the auto line feed seems terrible. Same issue as you. I always wonder that I must be doing something wrong. Tried cheap brands and a pricy Flymo also. No difference. I don't know I'd chance it again. Then again, maybe I am doing something wrong??!

Isn't Argos closed anyway?

Sainsbury's in store and home delivery is still going as of now.

Only the dedicated Argos stores are shut.

I have exactly the same problem. Bought expensive bought cheap. Bought one that had the plastic strips rather than cord and all of them snap after seconds. I hate these things. I must be doing something wrong.

Anyone got an alternative to use? I hate these corded strimmers

The only good strimmer I’ve ever used was a 2 stroke Stihl strimmer- but you obviously pay alot more for one of them

Not just me then.
I can't speak to this directly, but I recently bought a Spear and Jackson lawnmower, that I returned twice, first time a part was missing and the second time the grass box kept falling off, apparently a common fault. Also felt the overall quality was poor.
Again, not knocking this item, but I personally wouldn't buy any of their equipment again.
I've let my grass get too long- will this allow me to trim the top so that my usual lawn mower can have an easier time doing the bulk of the cutting?
I'd get the Worx equivelant (or model below) that is cordless - a must have for garden equipment IMO

I got the more basic one for £27 without a battery (as I already have one).

Does it actually work though? Seems you are very lucky if so given the comments on the thread!!!

Worx do two cordless versions. The more basic one, with no battery, included, is £27-30 in Amazon Warehouse:
