I don't know about you but I love PESTO!
And so many different varieties at 99p... it's a steal (I think).

...in Aldi maybe.
But for people that shop in Tesco, Morrisons, Somerfield etc... you're looking at £1.70+ easy!

But is any one of them a classic pesto? I can't see the ingredients in the green one but do you get cashew nuts instead of pine? What cheese is involved? Not all "classic" pesto sauces are the same and there are times when it's worth buying a more expensive product because you are getting a different (and better) product.

"Cheap" doesn't necessarily equate to "value for money". There again, the nearest Aldi is 24 miles away from me so it'd be difficult to save enough extra to cover the costs of getting there and back in comparison with closer stores.

delicious

As it happens, I buy the green one.
"This specially selected green pesto is a classic italian blend of fragrant basil, olive oil, grana padano (whatever that is? ...cheese i guess) and crunchy pine nuts."

Thanks, Relievo. Sounds very promising. Impressed that they use pine nut rather than cashew. Grana Padano is close to Parmigiano-Reggiano but not as elitist so is more affordable and is probably indistinguishable from it in a pesto sauce - especially if serving with some Parmigiano-Reggiano on top.

The Tesco Finest range used to include a proper classic pesto (at a price) but they ceased that so no longer offer (what I consider to be) a proper pesto of any brand. 99p might not be a special price - but it sounds like a good deal anyway!

Hi JonBoy

I rememeber the pesto you are talking about at tesco. I thought it was good enough for pasta.

You sound like you know quite a lot about pesto. So if you try the aldi pesto, i'd love to hear what you think.

For me I think it tastes a little more bitter than usual. ..but still alright.
