Specsavers Kids get TWO FREE PAIRS of glasses with NHS voucher

Found 13th May 2014
Found out my little 5 year old needs specs, so took the voucher i'd just been given along to our local specsavers.
turns out, specsavers give you their free NHS pair (these can be fixed as many times as you like) then specsavers let you choose another pair for spare (handy for first time wearer's if damage is caused) the specsavers ones CAN'T be repaired as much as the NHS ones but they can be fixed a bit.
both pairs i ordered my son should of been £85 each (i didnt have to pay anything), not bad considering the nhs voucher is only ment to be worth £40 approx and you get a spare pair aswell!

My 4 yr old daughter wears glasses, we go to Boots opticians.

I asked them for a spare pair, they just said come in and tell us they are lost and we will give you another voucher to fill in to get another pair! Which is what we done.

And the NHS voucher doesnt just cover up to £40 only, my daughters glasses were £135 per pair and we got them both totally free!

True, I live 2 mins from Boots so was fine for me. I didnt realise the voucher did just say up to £40, wow! And glasses are so expensive!

i'm 20 mins away from my specsavers and my local town is even gonna start charging for on street parking soon so i try to avoid town as much as i can. Our council is killing our shops. the least i go the better! and your right, they are very expensive!!!

So they're asking you to say they are lost when they're not so they can claim it from the nhs under a replacement voucher??

If this is true then this Boots Optician should be reported for promoting fraud/abuse of the NHS voucher scheme.

(I have no issue with children having glasses paid for by the tax-payer btw)

Yes, as they do not provide a spare pair like many other opticians do.

Yes, its not correct what they are doing! Boots would not give my daughter a spare pair, like some other opticians do, they said they wouldnt and the only way to get a spare would be to pretend my daughter lost them. Boots know they shouldnt do this - it was 2 different assistants in the opticians that whispered to me that was what I would have to do. I did want a spare for my 4 yr old so did do it.

Lol I guess it doesn't matter to them because they will just claim the cost of the glasses from the NHS, but they can only fill in a new NHS voucher if a child has genuinely lost or broken their glasses beyond repair. Specsavers usually do this promo during the summer whilst the rest of the year it's just one pair for kids so worth booking kids in for a sight test if they are due

if the child is under the hospital for their eyes if you ask they will give you another prescription for spares. also the weaker the eye the higher the value of the nhs voucher and the hospital voucher is worth more than a voucher from a normal optician

The voucher i got was from the hospital this morning, it didn't state anything about weaker eyes etc, just that it was worth £40

We have been going to the hospital several times, my daughter is wearing a patch on the 'good' eye for 6 hrs per day. And when I say 'good' its the best eye out of 2 poor ones! Our voucher was from the hospital, do you mean ask the hospital for another voucher for a spare?

thanks, my son just got glasses so this information is very useful.

yes, especially if she has patches as they are trying to correct the eye so if something does happen to the glasses her treatment is interrupted due to no spare pair.
I've never seen an amount on any prescription although the strength of prescription and were it is from greatly increases the amount it's worth

Hospital vouchers are not worth more than opticians ones it is a standard rate. The only thing that changes the amount of the voucher is the prescription if it is above +/-6 it is worth £55 gradually increasing as the prescription increases.

Optical Express already give you two pairs free. We switched from specsavers after we found out that they made my 7 year old son the wrong prescription and we were making him wear them for months until the educational optometrist said he sees better without his glasses! We then got them checked and they were for shortsighted instead of long sighted! We then switched to Optical Express and got two pairs. This was months before specsavers changed.
