could you just combine this with say a 64 gb microsd card and essentially have a 64gb usb key that's cheaper than buying a normal 64gb usb key?

You could do that, but when you can get 64GB USB's for a tenner, it's maybe going to be hard to beat that price.

Also, this is slow and (I have one) the micro SD card isn't held very tightly so could fall out when moving it around.

Got one too and agree that sd card is very loosely held and its quite slow
