Your idea and my idea of children's literature are VERY different. I certainly hope my son's aren't taught about Spongebob's 'Tasty Jokes' at school!!
Why not?
It's all about making children's literature relevant and exciting for them. With early reading it is important to use a variety of texts which interest them. Having texts that they want to read will encourage them to pick up a book and to have a go at reading it. This is especially true for boys. Obviously they can't just be taught using Spongebob but if they are engaged whilst reading Spongebob then they will make greater progress than if they were read an excellent piece of literature which they're not interested in.
