The brand new Squeezebox Touch can now be ordered from the Logitech website and the discount code RELAUNCH2009 (thanks to other posters for this) brings it down to £207.20 (RRP £259.00).

This is a giant killer bit of proper HiFi that should hold its own against some very high end kit. Or for more modest systems this is a very flexible and versatile bit of kit that can be used in many configurations.

Audio formats

Internet radio
Support for MP3, Ogg Vorbis, RealAudio, and WMA formatted Internet Radio streams

Wireless interface
True 802.11g wireless networking
Support for 802.11b and 802.11g routers and access points
Throughput up to 54 Mbps, high speed PCI interface to radio module
One-touch setup (with compatible WPS-supporting routers)
Supports WPA Personal, WPA-2AES, and 64/128-bit WEP encryption
Ethernet interface
Shielded CAT5 RJ-45 connector
Connects to any 100 Mbps or 10 Mbps network (with Auto MDX)

General
USB host connector for accessing music and photos via USB drive or USB key
SD card slot for music and photos
Supports sampling rates up to 24 bit / 96 kHz
Stereo analog (RCA), digital optical, and digital coax output
4,3" (11 cm) 24-bit color LCD with capacitive touch screen
Ambient light sensor to adjust display brightness according to environment
Infrared proximity sensor to detect presence and wake from sleep mode

Key features for me are the USB direct connection removing the need to have a PC running and the true 24bit (capable) digital out. Just add a good external DAC and this should be a very capable digital source.

First deal post so be kind!

Just bought a Logitech Boom. Many thanks! Rated hot!

am doing a simular thing on my iphone but with videos
well avi/divx/mp4/mkv etc.etc......
with air video cost £1.79 for the app on app store, you also install it on your vista or xp computer for free. tell the software what folder to share, Then just add the server to your iphone
do need to look for an app to stream music
iknow the iphones are alot more expensive than this but if you already have one then this is great

As the OP said, if you add a cheap (but very hi-tech) Chinese made external DAC (which accepts optical or coaxial inputs) to this you will have yourself some seriously high end matching hifi for not very much.

I have the DIYEDEN (now called Musiland) SVDAC06 which I managed to pick up for £85 inlcuding postage from here last year (it costs a lot more elsewhere but for some reason they sell this model much cheaper). This thing will rival most cd players for sound up to £2000.

vocativeaudio.com/eng…tml

Add yourself a class D tri-path amplifier (find online reviews of the Trends Audio amp for example) for about the same price and you've got a system that no one else you know will be able to match. I replaced my £3000 cd player and amp combo for a Chinese made DAC and Tri-Path Amp that cost £150 and feed music from my laptop or ps3 and it's better.

Try it yourself and you won't look back.

Having orderred mine, I did a bit of a search on the nets and some people seem to think the Logitech site gets stock of new items before other shops and some people think they get things later. Just hope this will be out through Logitech direct first, fingers crossed!

This code applies to the Transporter as well

Brings it down to 1,200 GBP which is just about 1,999 USD. Reasonable, since it is usually overpriced when brought over here.

Just had my squeezebox duet delivered today. It is amaaaaaazin.....

Easy to set up, great sound and access to 8 million songs on Napster for a £5er a month - bargain

This is probably an enormously stupid question but what is the advantage/difference of the squeezebox et al over using a standard interconnector between your laptop/pc and your hi-fi amp? Obviously there is a wireless element, but doesn't the squeezebox have to be wired to a amp/speaker somehow?

This 20% discount code works across everything on Logitechs site

The Duet and Squeezebox equipment are amazing additions to your music set-up and you probably need a while to fully understand and appreciate what it is and how to set it up to it's maximum.

I bought a Squeezebox Boom a few months ago then purchased a Duet system with the very expensive colour controller and have just about got everything working well but there is quite a learning curve. Plug and Play it ain't. If you can invest the time setting it up, sorting out the Squeezebox software and adding all the applications it will revolutionize your music and listening habits.

I have mine running through a DacMagic2 connected to cheapy Tannoy M2 speakers and the sound is superb. Nice warm sound, no trashy harsh noises and the ability to navigate internet music stations, your own music collection or podcasts with the ease of the Ipod style scroll wheel.

I think if people understood these devices better and what they could do for your music enjoyment they'd never look back.

Logitech have great customer support for these things as well.

Any one know how long the 20% off code is going to work for?

Nice, but wireless only and i use wired, so not so great for me. Have squeezebox 3, great bit of kit, just wish you could get a proper instant on mini box to run the server component.

I think you can plug a usb drive direct into the Squeezebox Touch if i have that right.

I love my Squeezebox three, not sure really what this would give me (apart from the obvious touch screen functionality, and USB) as the specifications look very similar.

Good price though, and would recommend anyone to get one who does not own a Squeezebox already as they are awesome bits of kit.

It streams your music files from your PC to another location.

Lets say you have a killer hifi in the lounge but all you music is held digitally on your PC, you use a streamer such as this to wirelessley send you music to the lounge hifi.

That's it in a nutshell. Hope it helps

It can be used as a music streamer from your PC as paulynmarshall says, but this is the first Squeezebox that can have a HDD plugged into it directly removing the need have a wireless network set up at all. It also has very good sound quality compared to a lot of streaming systems and can playback pretty much any audio format you throw at it. I am planning to use it along with a good external DAC in a system that costs over 10 times more than the Squeezebox itself and I am expecting it to hold its own with my other kit. You will need quite a good Hifi though to hear the difference in sound quality though.

As has been mentioned already, it allows you to strram music from a computer/NAS. I have the Touch's precursor, the Squeezebox Classic.

It has transformed how I listen to music. After the admittedly time consuming process of ripping all my CD's to FLAC, I can now instantly access any album or individual track at any time I want without having to trawl through many hundreds of CD's.

I'm using it thriugh a pretty decent setup via an external DAC, a Dacmagic (although the Squeezebox have an in-built DAC of their own) and the results are amazing, well worth the investment. In fact, I've already ordered the Touch as its replacement!

Nano for the record - this does have an ethernet port.

As far as i am aware you don't need a pc with this

Just plug a usb hardrive into the touch as mentioned

I'd like to get a multi-room set-up sorted- thinking about this new touch for dining room, but then also want setup for sitting room and bedroom. What would make sense- if I got this touch and a duet, would it all work together in a way that makes sense- I think that way I'd be able to use the duet-remote to control music in any room (including the touch)- have a nice interface for music selection in the dining room. But I'm not sure if that doubles up on some of the kit you need- ie do you end up with two of the boxes that connect to your pc? any guidance appreciated.

Sorry - crossed wires. I realise squeezebox touch has ethernet (i should have said it was the Pure device that someone else had linked to that was wireless only - it looked very impressive).

If you wish to use ethernet on squeezebox you need to have the squeezebox server running on a computer somewhere or in embedded form on a nas box (though I hear these boxes have underpowered processors, so the concern is poor performance form the server). The other issue with these embedded servers is that the newer versions/betas aren't available as quick.

The usb connection is very interesting, it means not having to run a noisy box (embedded nas or computer). I wonder if having the circuitry for plugging in usb direct in any way causes interference and hence reduced audio quality (though I personally connect squeezebox digital out to amp).

I think the Touch can act as the a server itself for other SBs and I really dont think that a usb connection would interfere with the sound at all. A lot of forums suggest upgrading the power supplies for a quick and easy sound upgrade, maybe a second hand bench test power supply unit?

Hi
Seriously tempted by this as i have already got a boom (from a deal I spotted on here a while back thanks to whoever posted it).
But when i go to the page it just says notify me, I can't see an option to buy or pre-order.

Looks like they have stopped taking orders now, I will expire.

Totally out of the blue mine was delivered today! Complete shock. I ordered it in October 09 and thought it had been cancelled. Now have to check if they have billed me.
