SSE Ultrafast Fibre Broadband upto 76mbps + talk Anytime 18M contract £21

My virgin media broadband contract (£22.99 for 75mbps) is coming to and end next month. I have no idea what the SSE services are like, but its openreach fibre to the cabinet and last mile will be copper. From a price point this seems to be a cheap deal for fibre broadband and calls.

Offer details:-

Offer ends 14 Nov 2016. T&Cs apply see sse.co.uk/off…rms. Fibre Broadband packages £0 for first 18 months. Talk Anytime from £5 per month plus £16 a month for line rental, call charges may apply. Cannot be used in conjunction with any other offer.

this gets posted on a weekly basis at the moment and always goes ice cold. i've had them for a few months and i've had zero issues so far, so certainly heated from me. won't be so lucky with everyone else

How many times will this be posted and looking at reviews it looks terrible..

Iam really after broadband but this is the cheapest but they do heavy throttle so avoiding them..

I used this deal to barter better deal with my current provider BT as I was at the end of my contract. Best they could give me BT infinity 1 £10, unlimited calls £8.50 free caller display again and BT Sport. They said this was a managers special. Line rental £205 for the year

People may want to know since TalkTalk increased prices.

I realise sse was cheaper but reviews sound terrible

it's not the first time I've ssen this deal

Mine was fine for a few months but the speeds are now 70Mbps during the day and down to 2Mbps in the evening. Ongoing dispute. Best stick with BT or Plusnet

it depends what your usage is really. the evening speed throttling doesn't really affect me because i'm never really online during the evening.

downloading overnight is a habit i developed when i had plusnet as it was also deemed "off peak" so that doesn't really bother me either.

for when i do use my internet connection, sse is absolutely fine

Comments like this always really helpful for info. Thanks.

I was put off by the reviews but used the deal to barter a better deal from my existing provider.

Still 15 more days to decide whether to leave Virgin, I'm on 50mbit for 21.99 + 3.49 from November..

Anyone tried vodafone yet?

Does the throttling only affect torrents or all usage? What about Netflix streaming?

i have read it also throttle youtube

i can only speak for what i've used it for on the odd occasion but from 7pm to midnight, torrents are basically crippled. you'll be lucky if you get 50kb/s download speed even if you've got 50-plus seeds.

regular usage is fine and even direct downloading is fine but i wouldn't know how good or bad streaming is though

i've never experienced that and i watch a LOT of youtube

Thanks for commenting.. so apart of torrents.. youtube isnfine. Have u ever used any streaming and how are upload speeds ?

Avoid like the plague. I have it, & it's the worst broadband I ever encountered. I'll be getting away from SSE asap.

i haven't actually done any major league streaming apart from watching the odd football match here and there and that's been as good as you can expect for the free streams.

don't really upload so couldn't tell you.

i do appear to be in a distinct minority here but that's fine

avoid like the plague...the throttling is unbelievable better of with sky

There's are some advantages to signing up with SSE:

1 It's very cheap
2 It's perfectly usable Monday-Friday before about 17.00.
3 The customer service is rather good - altogether different BT, for example.
4 If you're careful, and get some firm commitments about speed from them before you sign up and make the contract, it can be used as a means of leaving your existing supplier (BT, say) and then going back to it again as a 'new' customer for the cashback and new customer rates. The way this works is by establishing that SSE haven't met their side of the contract, enabling you to get out of the 18 month contract early.

The disadvantage, though, is that in the evenings, when you're most likely to want to use it, the speed is likely to be abysmal - possibly as low as 5mbps according to some reports.

Suitable for some people, then, but not for everybody, and if you plan to use SSE as a means of ditching your existing supplier and returning to it as a new customer you do need to be prepared for a bit of work proving the low speeds. It also helps to be clued up on basic contract law.

You tube can be a problem, Ive had this for about a year and some days get stuttering and buffering on you tube, also forget watching you tube at over 1080p never works at all. This may be due to throttling but may just be down to their supplier daisy chain having lack of capacity in general, the only thing i know they throttle for sure are torrents, basically to nearly nothing in the evenings.
The price is very good, cant be beaten really, and their customer service is in the uk, but in my experience you dont really get anywhere with them even though they are polite and helpful.
Id recommend it only to my parents who dont do much but emails and light browsing and would benefit from the free landline calls. As for myself Ill be moving when my contract ends, can use mobile for calls and never had any issues with either BT or TalkTalk on fibre got faster more consistent speeds with both, so I would prefer to pay the premium for that.

Abysmal for fibre, but you can still do a lot with 5Mbps, it's not like it would be unusable. We get a top speed of 4.5 with our standard broadband, and we can stream NowTV onto two TVs at the same time.

I wouldn't upgrade to fibre unless I knew I'd get decent speeds all the time though.

Avoid like the plague if you want to do anything with your internet connection during peak hours i.e. Netflix, Youtube, gaming, browsing

My speed at 8 o'clock this evening, and most evenings, is 0.20Mbps on my Ultrafast Fibre unto 76Mbps connection!!

If you don't use your internet during peak hours it's a fantastic offer but I can't recommend if otherwise. Can't wait for my contract to finish and leave

I have 1 month left on my BT Infinity 1 deal. Paying £12.10 a month for 52Mbps. Called retentions and best i got was £7 BT inifinty 1 or £15 infinity 2. Told him about the SSE deal and he said he couldnt beat it and was interested himself.... lol. He also mentioned that if I was simply to cancel the 12 months contract after 12 months was up, I would have to pay a £31 exit fee, he recommended my new fibre supplier to take over the line to save that money as they usually pay it (and probably charge me for it as a one off up front fee). I loved BT Infinity no traffic shaping. Always get max speeds all day every day on both browsing, streaming and torrents as well as steam downloads. If anyone is in a similar position, do reply and let me know what you are doing.

I was happy with my BT infinity 1 deal for a tenner until you said you got it for £7! I have 14 day cooling off I think now I'm wondering whether to call them back threat to move (again) to try get it reduced. Utility firms like BT and sky should be made to offer their lowest price to everyone rather than go through this every 12 months!

I've never had any issues with browsing or youtube during the evening, but i'm curious to find out how things are so i'll do a few speed tests later tonight.

Unfortunately not offering in my area, seems like an excellent deal with fast speed and calls included, but seems to always go cold probably due to reviews.

The thing is when researching broadband providers, there is always enough bad reviews to put you off moving to any company.
BT- I will never go back to them, Talktalk im with now want to leave worst broadband speeds lucky if I can stream a youtube video. Then If I mention moving to virgin or sky etc. other, there is loads of follow up posts saying speeds are terrible, the will keep putting up the price.
Then you get one or two people saying they are fine, its distance from your exchange that will effect speed, bad wiring etc. bad reviews etc. .
I'm Totally bamboozled by researching broadband providers

As is often said, people who are satisfied and happy with the service aren't likely to go online to say so. And, if they do, it's likely they'll also be accused of being company stooges or plants paid to say good things about a service that "everyone" has complained about.

I don't have any issue saying how pleased i am with SSE so far because I am, and i'm certainly not being paid to say that either !

I gave notice to virgin on Saturday to cancel the contract. Tuesday they gave a call and renewed the contract for another 12 months @ £22.99 for 75mbps fibre all inclusive. That's a very good deal

Just cancelled it today after using for 5-6 months - customer service people are very good and really feel bad for them but the broadband is awful. In evening, test sites will say 70 mbps but every useful site will buffer ex: youtube, bbc player etc. The wifi is also very bad, will keep getting disconnected. Day time use is ok but definitely not ultrafast fibre. Moving back to BT infinity. Made complaint, followed up for 3-4 weeks with proofs of low speed and they agreed to leave without termination fees

stay with virgin. I had the same plan (bumped up to 70 mbps). Shame I was forced to move houses and in new place there is no virgin internet yet.

Exactly right.

I've been with them about 3 months now, I don't use torrents, but have tested them and it is unusable its that slow on a night, but you should really be using a VPN with them anyway, which gets round the problem. Newsgroups are full speed, I get the full 65mb my line supports day or night on newsgroups, youtube I have had a few buffering problems but not many, and had an outage for 2 hours around a month ago, but that can happen with anyone. I don't really stream much, but have tested it a few times, again, works fine.
I do actually use the house phone and can't get line rental and 24/7 calls for £21 anywhere else, so the way I look at it is, the BB is completely free, for that I can put up with the odd bit of buffering on youtube once in a while.

Heavy torrent throttling! my 56mb connection goes down to 30KiB/sec all evening... wish I knew this before signing up.. Cheap for a reason.

I've had the internet for over a month or 2 now. The speed is beyond usable. Speed tests come up around 70ish. But I had sky 40 mb and was perfect.

SSE on Ethernet on Xbox seems fine. But wireless is awful. Changed to all wifi channels. Still bad. Hard to watch videos on mobile etc.
