Is this a good first learners guitar for someone considering learning to play or shoud they go acoustic?

Guitar mags suggest playing electric is easier than acoustic for beginners, generally lighter strings, smaller neck circumference, it also has the advantage that playing those bad chords at the start for hours on end can be done without the amp on and thus save embarassment and ears.

That depends on what style they want to play. Both have their own distinct ways of playing, despite the standard guitar playing technique - If you can find a good acoustic deal, then please post it!

This is the best part, surely? We all love to make a bit of noise.

Ebuyer usually do acoustic as well & have the strat style guitars on offer at the moment.

Please don't buy this - it's Chinese or Korean rubbish so will be awful quality - especially at this price!
If you're trying to learn - a V doesn not sit easily in your lap - you have to wedge it between your legs in order to play it.
Learn on an acoustic - so when you make the transition from acoustic to electric - your playing ability and spped will immediately improve - with the techniques learnt on an acoustic having greatest effect.

If you want a good acoustic deal - pop into a shop and try one out. Start cheap(ish - £100 should be the minimum).

I cannot vouch for this particular model but I have bought from ebuyer a decent electric guitar for beginners. Particularly for kids who may or may not continue, you do not want to spend too much money. I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of the model I bought.

I've added a price and retailer name to the thread title. Thanks.

I bought the black strat style at xmas for a beginner. Her guitar teacher was impressed with the quality given the price, yes it is from China but it is all solid wood & apparently plays well. The only down comment was about the strings which could be better.
