Andrei Tarkovsky’s hypnotic sci-fi masterpiece, a visually astonishing journey… The final Soviet feature by ANDREI TARKOVSKY (Solaris) is a metaphysical journey through an enigmatic post-apocalyptic landscape, and a rarefied cinematic experience like no other. A hired guide—the Stalker—leads a writer and a scientist into the heart of the Zone, the restricted site of a long-ago disaster, where the three men eventually zero in on the Room, a place rumoured to fulfil one’s most deeply held desires. Adapting a science-fiction novel by Arkady and Boris Strugatsky, Tarkovsky created an immersive world with a wealth of material detail and a sense of organic atmosphere. A religious allegory, a reflection of contemporaneous political anxieties, a meditation on film itself – Stalker envelops the viewer by opening up a multitude of possible meanings.

Awful awful awful film. I liked Solaris, actually i bloody loved Solaris but this was absolute toss. This film reminded me of a 6 formers rubbish poetry the kind with really obvious symbolism and terrible pacing as they get bored and decide to wrap it up.

I've actually managed to make the film sound better than it is. Its a painful watch.
.
Iirc this is what the s.t.a.l.k.e.r. games are based on

Edit: yep

Didn't put 2 and 2 together and realise this came out before the Chernobyl disaster, wow

Oh! Have been watching DVD versions on the bay, usually going for around this price. Not yet bought. Would have been tempted to get this.
Annihilation is based on the books by Jeff VanderMeer (Southern Reach trilogy) themselves said to be inspired by this film and the original Strugatsky book 'Roadside Picnic'. I have read all of the Southern Reach, watched Annihilation and read Roadside Picnic and enjoyed them all (despite each being significantly different). Would expect to like this too. Now I'm not so sure!

A good price though (compared with second hand DVDs at least).
And just seen, out of stock! Problem solved LOL.
