Very bad user reviews for it though...

To be fair there are 21 reviews on play, some good and some bad. With an overall rating of 3 and a half stars though, I wouldn't really call that very bad, more above average which for the price, I think is worth it for what you are getting. Each to their own though!

clicked on the deal thinking would be a nice present for my husband, but the reviews put me off.

Save your money and get the proper Force FX Luke, Yoda Or Darth Lightsaber, they are also £34.99 @Play except the Vader one which is £39.99, they are much better quality.

Would not touch this kit, very bad reviews.

True, but the people with the bad reviews have lots of very good reasons for why they think it's bad, while the people who voted highly for the product didn't seem to say as much.

I do really like consumer reviews on websites, I've often found some very useful information in them. Particularly when buying DVD players and suchlike. But, I digress.

I agree with you, consumer reviews are well worth reading first. I was reading some of the ones again on play and I have to disagree with you slightly (sorry!). Here is an example of someone who wrote a bad review:

"Very disappointed. Perfect for 2 - 4 year olds. Glow of the blade is rubbish. Mostly cheap plastic parts. Some lightsabers I bought for my children from the One Pound shop have better glowing blades."

And now someone with a four star review:

"If you want the best Quality Blade available, get Darth Mauls. Whilst this saber is not as good quality as the Dedicated ones, I think it is good value for what it is. Advantage 1. If you can afford only one, this can be made into any of 3 originals, Darth Vader, Luke Skywalker mk1 or mk2, all with the correct colour blade(blade is 12cm shorter than standard Sabers). By mixing the parts you can also make your own unique Sabre. Advantage 2. The single LED is more durable than the multiple ones in the dedicated blades, so less likely to break in combat. It may even be possible that if one colour fails, the others may still work. Advantage 3. The On/Off switch needs a solid press to make work, so less likely to accidently switch off whilst using than dedicated Blades (except Darth Mauls). Disadvantage 1. Once built, the Handle components tend to be slightly loose on the Shaft, giving it a poor feel. I solved this by putting a few strips of Electrical Insulation Tape down the Shaft to make the components fit tighter. Disadvantage 2. Blade is brighter at the Handle but dims significantly towards the tip compared to dedicated Sabers & does not Power up/Down like they do due to it only having a single LED. Disadvantage 3. No connecter to make a Double Headed Saber like Darth Mauls. The shaft is also slightly thinner than DMs so you cannot use a spare connector from that one to join two of these."

So to be fair I think there are people on the low ratings who haven't said much and people on the high star ratings that have explained their reviews.

I totally agree with what people have been saying, the FX blades are better quality (I have Yoda's, Vader's and Luke's) although I think this one is worth the money due to it having the ability of being a number of different types of blade, a function I believe to be pretty cool! Considering you can pull it apart and put it together in so many different ways, I think you will loose some of the solid construction you get from the other FX blades but I think its worth it for the gain in the number of designs you can have.

All in all I think for £35 it's worth it buts that's just my opinion :-D

Luke's one is also £39.99, it's just the Yoda one which is £34.99:

Personally I would pay the extra £5 and go for the Luke or Vader one as they both have longer and wider blades. I would say Luke's is best of all though as it is longer than Yoda's and brighter than Vader's.

Already got the Vader one from last year when Play sold them for £25 each.

The Luke Saber was £34.99 on Play over Easter, picked one up as well, should be with me tomorrow.

I did post the deal here:- hotukdeals.com/ite…-fx

Fair play, they must have sold a lot of them and put the price up again. I got all three sabers when they were £25 each last year, saw them on hotdeals, I love hotdeals! :-D Although I do end up spending loads!

I'm sure you will like the Luke one if you liked the Vader one, I personally like the Luke one best. Now you have 2 you can have saber fights with someone, I had one with two work mates in the store room in work. We turned off the lights and turned on the sabers, they glowed so well! Was great fun! :-D

They also had a full size Stormtrooper helmet for £49.99 in the sale, gone back up to £59.99 now.

How sturdy are the blades? I mean, were you actually able to fight with them confident that they wouldn't fall apart?

Yeah no worries at all! We were really whacking them against each other for about 30 mins and they were all fine. You have some little marks on them but nothing too bad. They make the crashing sounds as you do hit them against each other, its great fun! :-D

Darth Vader / Luke Skywalker / Yoda all lightsabers now showing up on Play at £34.99 delivered.
