Star Wars stamps - first day covers available until 20th Oct - £9.55 - UPDATED!!

NOTE - SEE UPDATE BELOW

This is a heads-up for anyone who hasn't heard about the Royal Mail releasing Star Wars stamps this week. Could be a useful Christmas gift for a Star Wars fan?

If you want first day covers they must be ordered by midnight on the 20th October. The other Star Wars stamp sets will continue to be available after that date.

Yes, I do realise that it's the normal price for these, and experience tells me that some people will complain that it's not a "proper" deal, but I'd prefer to suffer the wrath of a few whingers than see people miss out ... :-)

EDIT - UPDATE - Look carefully - I think there are 2 sets of the 1st day covers, each with a choice of Alliance and Imperial postmarks. The first is the 12 character stamps and the second described at "Star Wars sheet" contains 6 stamps with various craft, including the Millennium Falcon.

Working fine for me - the "shop now" link on that page takes you to shop.royalmail.com/iss…ars so you could try that instead.
Just to clarify, the Alliance & Imperial sets are the same stamps, but with different logos on them/the packaging/the set.

...I think.
How do these stamps cling on?
Thanks for the reminder Spod!
If you get a first day cover, can the stamps be used to send letters? Tempted to get some as a present for my brother for christmas, but he might have had them already as he collects all sorts of stuff, if he has them could he then use the stamps?
These are the stamps I'm looking for
What is the difference between the Imperial one and the Alliance one?
Cheers OP. Have heated this up!

What is the difference between the Imperial one and the Alliance one?

As far as I can tell it's only the postmark design on the envelope which is different.

According to the web site:
The Alliance cover has "a blue ink Alliance Starbird design and the location Elstree, Borehamwood; the birthplace of Star Wars".
The Imperial cover "features a unique starscape depicting an X-Wing pursued by Imperial Tie Fighters." I'm not sure

Personally I'm 100% convinced by the Imperial design and I prefer the look of the Alliance cover.

Producing 2 variants of the same thing is just a clever way of gouging more money out of the fans.

Could you sneak in a sly Harry Potter or Lord of the Rings reference as well?
I feel a strong presents with this one.....:p
Thanks op, I would've missed out on first day without this reminder.
Cheers, ordered for someone who's a big fan as a 40th gift (he already has everything...!).
What are 'first day covers'?

What are 'first day covers'?

When stamps are issued in the UK, a special cover is released on the first day that the stamps become available.
There is usually a complete set of the stamps on the cover and a special mark just for that day.
They get stamped with the date of the issue.

Some people collect these covers. A lot of people think they are pointless, but they do usually look good and they do usually retain their value if you sell them after a few years. Sometimes they increase in value over a number of years, but the gain is rarely very big - but just occasionally there is a rare or in-demand set which makes a decent return.

It's a strange tradition really, but it is quite a nice idea for a Star Wars fan and/or stamp collector. I wouldn't necessarily regard it as any sort of investment, but I think the stamps do look good and it's an unusual gift.

anyone know if you can go down to the post office before the deadline and pick them up without putting a name and address on them?
I know you used to be able to do that but that was a while ago.....
how come they are cheaper for international addresses?

Something to do with getting a massive group of mates together ...something to do with going on a quest to the fires of Mordor... then something to do with precious... precious stamps.

No VAT for foreign orders so 20% cheaper. £9.55 divided by 1.2 = £7.96

Stamps for postage are still VAT exempt, but first day covers and other philatelic collectors’ items are taxable at the standard rate.

See: gov.uk/gov…ies

Should have been released on 4th May ........
I ordered £300 of the stamps a few weeks ago for general business use, makes an eye catching envelope for mail shots.

Postman "I'm not going to Alderaan. I've got to go home. It's late, I'm in for it as it is."
Re two postmarks. It's unusual to offer two "novelty" postmarks, but they often offer a traditional and a novelty postmark as options. The Wallace and Grommit Christmas stamps a few years ago had a traditional or optional novelty one which I think was the two in the classic side by side pose.
So,... what would happen, if I ordered the international Version to a my address in the UK?
