I have a carbon PX frame and it doesn't creak at all, even the BB30 cranks (does this make me unique in the world?). Also have a carbon MTB and have no issues there either, albeit it's a more expensive brand.

There's as much brand snobbery between cyclists as there is animosity between cyclists and non-cyclists on these forums

No doubt the cheaper alloy or carbon offerings will come from the same …No doubt the cheaper alloy or carbon offerings will come from the same factory.I'd like to believe at least some of the frames are built to a design that originated within the company owning the brand rather than be off the shelf OEM products. But no doubt for smaller brands even that aspect can be outsourced fully.

From what I understand fuji-ta will do rapid prototyping of frames for their customers but its all extra money which adds to the importers costs. To me most seem to go with generic proven fuji-ta designs which are offered for less money and likely more reliable. However its in the interests of such importers to claim they are manufactured to their design etc to add to the perceived value of the bike. The current market seems to be only high end models get the design innovation which helps market the brand and then the bulk of bike sales that bring in the real profits are generic chinese bikes at lower price points. I'm sure that doesn't fit the profile of all companies but it certainly seems true of most. Nothing wrong with them of course but then if you are just choosing an importer and the brand doesn't really make much difference its really about value, warranty etc. It's when people aspire to a top end model of a certain brand but make do with a lower end model of the same brand, they are connected in the consumer's mind but have in fact no real connection at all in reality.

But it is Bianchi, so can't argue with that.Still a bit funny to read the description, Alloy frame designed for riding long distances. Surely that's what carbon achieves with much less sophistication.

You have to consider the value overall because its just a brand slap on a chinese bike. The chinese manufacturer is fuji-ta which is fantastic quality but the same quality manufacturing is available on many brands. Fuji-ta are the largest bicycle manufacturer in the world of complete bicycles and also have a huge OEM frame business which supplies frames to many smaller companies in China, the far east, US and around Europe for assembly of bikes. If you watch the video you will see Bianchi is clearly stated. The factory door price for many frames can be as low as $10 with I guess something like $20 being the average and more premium frames going up to $30-40 the Bianchi frame looks pretty generic but good so I'd probably put it in the $20 plus catagory. Remember fuji-ta make whole road bikes that can sell for little more than £100 on the chinese market under the Battle brand. Same alloy frames but lower end components.

fuji-ta.com/roa…kes

I couldn't find road bikes listed on a chinese region online shop (only had a very quick search) but its not hard to extrapolate from prices here for other types of battle bike.

translate.google.com/tra…c=0

Just making the point judge by the what you are actually getting for your money and not the brand stuck on which can be meaningless nowadays. Nowadays at least at lower pricing bikes are getting pretty generic with many different brands stuck on basically the same manufacturer's frame and at different price points. If you peeled off the bianchi branding and resprayed the frame people probably wouldn't have a clue what bike brand it originally was. It's not worth paying hundreds of pounds more just to get the right sticker on the frame.

I read his point being that of the design and engineering behind the frame …I read his point being that of the design and engineering behind the frame to be the most important aspect regardless of material.Of course to tell if you like or not really requires getting on it and seeing if you like.

That certainly is true.
I think alloy frames are as good as they're going to be with decades of Innovation and improvement that have gone into them. They are certainly cheaper to manufacture. And if you look at Giant Defy range from a couple of seasons ago they use the same frame in a budget Claris equipped bike and one sporting 105 groupset.
Carbon is a harder material to work with and getting the best out of it will require more effort. But although the the engineering effort going into the cheaper frames does not maximise the potential of the material it still does a decent enough job. It's all helped by the good inherent properties of carbon.
And as brilliantly stiff and compliant the Defy is, I still felt my carbon Boardman was an improvement.

One scenario where I would go for alloy over carbon is disc specific bikes.

Fair comment, but then it's not advertised as 'full' 105. Something most bike manufacturers hide behind with their marketing. Plus you forgot to state it includes 105 shifters, which is the most relevant and expensive part of a groupset.

However, I suppose aside from pink, I don't really care about the colour of bikes and it never really features in my purchase decision.

Agree
imo the Forme is the better value but as others have said the gearing with 53/39 and 11/25 is very racy and wouldn't suit you if you're unfit.

I have the BTwin Mach 720 which has 52/36 and 11/28 cassette and that's good for me (https://www.decathlon.co.uk/mach-720-carbon-road-bike-105-id_8339670.html) and I'm pretty happy with it, sat on my turbo trainer at the moment. Slightly different (more aggressive) shape to the Ultra though.
Original Poster

I'm having the same problem. Not that fit though have done 50+ miles few times last year on a Halford Careera Road bike. What's putting me off the Forme is the inability to test ride this and if this requires adjustment later. I think at the end I'll land up with the BTWN. Though full price its components are same or better than the Forme except for the lighter carbon frame with the Forme .

My heart would say the Forme, my head, a little reluctantly, the BTwin. I would struggle with that gearing on the Forme, once the going got steep.

Unless, of course, you're extremely fit, or not planning to cycle anywhere hilly; in that case the Forme would definitely be my choice.

Hope you're not too badly bruised. The bike handles and corners like a proper all mountain machine. Gives you more confidence and encourages to go faster, brake later and so on. And as my skills and stamina improve I find it even more fun to ride. But I have to remind myself its only a short travel hardtail and be careful not to get carried away. One complaint I have is the seat clamp. It doesn't clamp the seat tube sufficiently well to hold the seatpost in place. And I'm on the extreme light end of the weight spectrum myself. I suspect the seat tube's diameter is left too large. This is going to force me into a purchase of a dropper post sooner or later.Does anyone else have this problem?

Not sure about the fork.I've been out on mine on Thursday for a proper test around our local trials. Nothing too extreme but a good test given I know those trials quite well. The bike rips. Really builds confidence in a beginner such as myself. Handling is really good on twisty singletrack. And it grips brilliantly compared to my old bike (which is partly attributed to larger wheels and wider tyres). The frame felt quite forgiving compared to steel. But that was on 20PSII rode it on the original stem and bars. I have replaced the stem with a cheapo 60mm one. I think I'll fit a low riser bar as well. When replacing the stem I noticed the front hub developed some major play. So I didn't manage to take out for a ride today. That's just typical shimano.

For the moment I've got 2.4" Chunky Monkies front and back so there's plenty of room for big tyres. I've ordered a Specialized Purgatory for the rear which should roll a bit faster.

I bought one of the Ventura CP50s with Sora and r500 wheels. This can't be any worse than that, and that is a perfectly good bike and if you've got perfectly good LEGS and put the hours in you'll still go faster than some overweight dentist on some Dura Ace thing in the same colour as his Boxster.

For the money this is a bargain. All this 'dangerous' carbon stuff seems pretty much a myth anyway. There's only so many factories knocking the frames out and I've read a lot of Chinese one's are the same frame just rebranded. Unless you plan on taking your road bike down the BMX track nothing will be breaking or falling to pieces. The only people slating stuff like this are the ones that went into Evans, got persuaded to spend at least £2k and then found out that didn't give you good Strava times. My power meter cost more than my bike and something like that makes a real difference to your training, not a groupset.

Find it hilarious that some pile of pig iron and cheap plastic that … Find it hilarious that some pile of pig iron and cheap plastic that appoximates a bike will romp past 100° on here, yet a superb deal on proper bike like this gets ignored. If your response is "it's expensive for a bike" then consider a deal for a 320d M-Sport for £15,000. Would people say the same thing? It's undoubtedly an expensive car - just because you can get a Dacia for £6k doesn't mean a £33k BMW for £15k isn't a bargain - but somehow different logic applies.HUKD is as HUKD does, I guess

amazing that you would bother to write that down.

It is suggested on this post from a proper MTB forum, and gets high praise for the spec for £££. Worthy of a standalone deal, OP! :Dhttp://singletrackworld.com/forum/topic/recommend-me-a-500-bike

Same with the winscar 29 for £699.

Kinesis frame with internal cable routing.
Reba RL fork
DT swiss 1900 rims
XT gears and SLX brakes.

Cracking bike for the price. Kinesis frames are worth few hundred alone.

The wowcher deal is still available folks

Weirdly I got an email telling me about this yesterday, it still has 2 days to run.

Unless you REALLY want this colour way, save yourself £16 and get the wowcher one (is the black colour version)

Can it tell you if you leave a HR zone?

I believe so, I've only had it a couple of runs, so have not experimented yet. One of the things I missed from my phone was voice feedback, apparently there is one of the training modes which brings stuff like this back.
There's only 3 hours left but it's £99 at wowcher
