They're great if you find yourself needing small custom parts. I've had parts for headphones and computer case feet printed in the past, really handy for that kind of thing.
Ooh, always tempted to get one of these to try out

Cheap enough and good if you want to dip your toes into the world of 3d printing as minimal assembly and doesn't take up too much space. However can personally recommend the Creality Ender 3 for not much more money but a whole lot more printer!

I'm thinking of getting this as a xmas present. So I assume not for metal, and do you think this is alright to give. I have no experience (or any interest) I'm 3D printing. But thanks for getting back so quick

Yes I'd say it will be fine as a present...its very good as you can pretty much print anything!
Got my son this and it's been working non stop. Prints straight out of the box, no need for anything else. Really pleased.
