OK, I'll hit it right off the bat, there is a free version of this available (the Legacy Edition) which can be downloaded [here].

This is for the Steam version that includes...

Nostalgia has never felt so fresh - Expect tremendously detailed environments, old-school tough-as-nails combat, and a gripping story with memorable characters. The all-new soundtrack, voice acting, choreography and dialogue create a more expansive and immersive experience than ever before!

Heavily updated single player experience - The over 10 hour single player experience has greatly improved from the mod release; new visuals, new voice over, updated gameplay encounters, stability changes and more. Xen is not part of the Early Access release, but will included as a free update when it is ready.

Black Mesa Multiplayer - Fight with or against your friends, in two game modes across 10 iconic maps from the Half-Life universe including Bounce, Gasworks, Stalkyard, Undertow and Crossfire!

Custom Modding Tools & Workshop - Use the same tools as the developers! Create your own mods, modes and maps for Black Mesa and Black Mesa Multiplayer and then share your work, and subscribe to others, on the Steam Workshop!

Complete Steam Integration - Collect the full set of trading cards, backgrounds, emoticons, and achievements! Steam Cloud, Steam Workshop and partial controller support!

And the description blurb reads as...

Black Mesa is the award winning fan-made re-imagining of Gordon Freeman's landmark journey through the Black Mesa Research Facility. Relive Half-Life, Valve Software's revolutionary debut, and experience the game that raised the bar for the entire game industry all over again!

No, but the 'mod' version was good enough.

The main reasons to get this are:
1) Access to online MP
2) Support the team
3) Essentially paying (and preying) 'pre-ordering' the final version which will include Xen (note: like all early access, there's no guarrantees)

It's the Xen part I've been waiting for.... Forever

This has been in development for around 10 years. We'll see HL3 before this is finished

Will hold off.

TBH, I think it's a miracle the original mod version was released.

I was at my nans at the time, so I spent half a day in a pub trying to download the torrent so I could finally play it as she had no internet.

I agree. I've been following this one for a long time. Way before it was on Steam. They've been "stuck" on Xen for what seems a lifetime. I very much doubt it will ever see the light of day.

From what gggmanlives has said recently on YouTube (https://youtu.be/_DK_G6yfPFk) it sounds like they may have 'broke' what made half-life special.

If it ever sees the life of day in its entirety I'll buy it. But in its current state I refuse to put money in to something when I'm not seeing much progress in...well too long... Which is a shame cause this seemed very promising... Back when the source engine was, well good looking! At this stage you may as well play half-life source

Crumbs, I bought this in July 2016 I still haven't played it

I have that free version, what's this different compared?

Really liked HL2, the thumpers/tremors was good.

Waited years for HL3 and the rumours.

Got the free version when it came out and was waiting for a sale for steam, will wait for the Xen levels to replay though

linux version - voted hot!
