I really regret being an adult with responsibilities who just doesn't have time to dedicate to this and now I feel I've missed the boat. Oh well.
The price is out of this world

Is this any good. What controller is it best suited to?

Brilliant game. Perfectly playable with an XBox controller, although obviously HOTAS is the best.

Might want to change the title, I thought the Commander Deluxe Edition was £4.99 from reading it.
One of the best games in the world if you have the time to learn the basics.
Is the base game alone worth it at £4.99, or is it a 'good but you need the £9.99 version really' deal?

It's really not that bad. You can play in small chunks. The odd mission here and there. The controls aren't particularly bad, it's not exactly impenetrable in terms of gameplay - fly to base, take mission(s), refuel, fly off, do it - rinse & repeat.

There's more to it obviously but I wouldn't let a lack of time put you off. Quite the opposite, it's a superb, immersive experience, so what better way to unwind for an hour or so than whipping out a cheap hotas and firing up the warp drive...
Commander Deluxe Edition worth it?

Definitely a HOTAS stick - even a cheapish one. If not, then M+K or Xbox Controller will do. Issues is that there are a LOT of buttons you might need.

For anyone with a VR headset who hasn't got this... WHAT THE HELL PEOPLE????!!!! It really does shine in VR and is one of the few games that I will set up my VR specifically to play for long periods.

Only caveat I'd make is that this is a game that probably requires a lot of time to get the most out of. The decision to make it a multiplayer sandbox at it's core was controversial and I really... REALLY wish they'd focused on singleplayer first as most of the time if feels pretty empty unless you're engaged with the community (I'm not, and don't have time to either). However, as a space flight model it's about as close as I ever thought I'd get to being in space for real.
Bought the Commander Deluxe Edition in the last sale. This is indeed a truly fabulous game!
Would definitely recommend getting the Deluxe Edition so that you don't miss out on any of the landing on planet missions/extra bits, because for the extra Fiver its not exactly going to break the bank.
It can be a little overwhelming at first, but when you do occasionally have a question etc just have a search on the net for answers or even youtube demonstration videos. I've currently got into deep-core mining in the game after watching a few vids. Firing and drilling your explosives into fissures on asteroids and then detonating them is extremely thrilling when using a huge tv screen and having the sonics of the cracking and booming explosion coming through your stereo.
All round it's definitely a very immersive game and experience. Plus it's supposed to be even better still if you have the luxury of VR.

Commander Deluxe Edition worth it?

There's a bunch of trinkets you don't need to care about (the use of different paint jobs for a spacecraft you entirely fly in 1st person is limited to playing around with the camera mode for screenshots and showing off to others in multiplayer) but the big thing you're paying the extra £5 for is the ability to go down onto planets. I'd say it's well worth it, unless you're planning on using the kind of low-powered laptop that can't handle the specs for planetary landing anyway.

I clocked up 300 hours on this according to Steam and I really enjoyed my time there. Some are fairly down on the game for being repetitive and lacking an "end", but if you have the personal strength to walk away when you're bored then you'll have easily got your money's worth first.

The flight model, graphics and in particular sound are amazing; the game as a whole feels very much like the Elite game I imagined in my head after playing the original back in 1985. But at the end of they day, you're still flying around space in a spaceship, trading cargo for profit, blowing up other spaceships and exploring the sights.

I must have passed 50 hours before I bought a flight stick instead of using a combination of Xbox 360 pad and keyboard, and being left handed even then my setup is some monstrous hodgepodge of Thrustmaster T.16000M in my left hand, Xbox One pad in my right and both hands reaching away to either the Thrustmaster's base buttons or the keyboard at times. Just for kicks I even mapped thrust to the pedals of my steering wheel at one point, but it was more hassle to dig out than it was worth in the end. This is in no way a recommendation for others to fly this way, but more just an indication that things are pretty flexible. I've even known people play with two independent flight sticks rather than your normal HOTAS.

Re: which to get, you can always upgrade to the expansion later, once you've decided it's something you're not just going to bounce off. So if you're really unsure, the cheap option's viable.

Fwiw - 'get deal' takes me to the Steam Store front page and not specifically this game.

Me too, good idea to change it OP
Used to play this on my C64, happy memories but haven't really got to grips with this version yet or maybe just patience needed.
What HOTAS do you peeps use and or recommend? Not high end price wise as budget is semi limited, but wondering if it'll be a much improved experience over the Xbox controller & keyboard?

It was changed 30 hours ago. When the comment you quoted was made, I'd missed the £9.99 out of the title. I can't help outside of that

Last time i played Elite was on the original game for the BEEB 32K model B.
Might give this a go certainly looks like it beats the wire frame white graphics of the Beebs limited 12k memory!

I retired at 40 and paid off my mortage by 35 and have total time to devote to this.

I have several hundred hours in it and seen a human player perhaps twice. Don't know if it's still the same but it used to be 128 players supported in same universe, although each universe could indirectly affect each other. So chances of meeting someone in anything other than a starting system is remote

In VR with a joystick it's amazing, takes your mind of grindyness of it. Haven't played it in months since Witcher 3 and shadow of war.

Combat is quite tricky, much easier if you have a ship with a tight turning circle to keep on their rear end and fast in a straight line, otherwise you'll get blown to bits
I bought the boggo version for a tenner a few months back. I've played it a bit and enjoyed it, but it does require an investment of time that as a casual gamer, I find hard to provide. Also I'd like to be able to land on planets but I don't want to fork out for the privilege!

This may be a controversial statement - but who doesn't like a bit of controversy eh?! - but I found no man's sky more accessible and enjoyable, with what is a fairly similar core gameplay mechanic. Obviously it's more arcadey and not a simulation as such, but it gives that feeling of space exploration and adventure whilst being easier to get into. That's a tacit acknowledgement that ED undoubtedly has greater ultimate depth and substance.
Is this game any good for casual game play and ‘single player’?

My mum is currently interested in flight games and I’m thinking of getting it for her.

It's quite deep and grindy. If your mum is a casual player she'll either not be able to spend enough time in it to really enjoy it, or she'll be engrossed in it so much she won't be a casual gamer and you'll never see your mum again.
Loved it until l spent 6 months getting a Anaconda only to get blown up and didn't have enough insurance.

Unfortunately yes!
I never thought I would wish I was single again!
keep playing elite all day and night and your wish will come true!
I still have a usb Microsoft sidewinder with force feedback. Will this work with elite or do I need a newer stick suck as the Hotas ? And if so does the hotas 4 work on pc as I’m about to buy one for PS4.

Eh? I used to have one of those and loved it but had to get rid of it decades ago as it stopped being supported by Microsoft and didn't work with anything.
I've managed 285 hours just using mouse and keyboard. I wouldn't even try to get into combat with this setup but that is now how I play.
Great in VR, one of the best. Although I super suck at dogfighting.
I'm pretty close to getting this, if only to get some use out of the Thrustmaster HOTAS stick I bought years ago for BF3.

For someone who can chuck an hour at a time at this - and even then needs to dash away to do grown up things like put the bins out mid-game - is this worth it, or does it need more of a committment than a casual gamer?
I don't mind wrapping my head around the mechanics of everything if - after I've got there - I can dive on for short periods and still be entertained.

Yup. I'm pretty much the same. Used to Manage an hour or so a night before wife would nag me to go to sleep. Used to run quite well on my laptop with intel graphics too although that was before they released horizons. Meant I could play at work with my x360 pad or in bed.

Once you've youtubed how to land on a space station you can pretty much learn as you go.

Combat used to be really easy, then went really hard, and last time I played it it was marginally easier but I had upgraded whatever ship I was in with best thrusters. If you can stay on their 6 you won't die.

Edit - like me, you'll use this to justify paying £400 for a vr headset, plus decent headphones, voice attack, reclining gaming chair and a hotas!
