[Steam] EVE Online' is now free-to-play

Editor
EVE Online has now added a free-to-play model to its popular MMO space title. I'll add the info from Engadget below

After over 13 years of paid subscriptions, EVE Online's recently revealed free-to-play experiment is now live. In a bid to boost its dwindling player base, CCP's latest expansion allows both new and existing players to explore the EVE universe for free.

This new pricing model is known as Clone States, and is the headline addition to the game's latest expansion, EVE Online: Ascension. New players will automatically start off as "Alpha Clones," with free access to all of EVE's world, though they'll be limited to to certain skills and spaceships. Pilots who want the complete EVE Online experience can opt to pay the $10 (£7) a month subscription, upgrading their player state to "Omega Clone," unlocking the game's full gamut of skills and spaceships.

One aspect of the expansion, called "Inception," offers a "revised new player experience," promising fully voiced mentor characters to ease players into the game, as well as a greater emphasis on story and large scale space battles. Thankfully for long-time players, the new pricing model and a few revisions to the existing gameplay aren't all that this expansion brings. Ascension also provides players with new sandbox features, buildings, management tools, ships and more immersive ship customization, and let's not forget the all important space explosions .

With EVE Online infamous for sparking wars that cost players hundreds of thousands of real-world dollars in damages, there's never been a more wallet-friendly way to dip your toes into EVE's all-consuming universe. After years of losing players, CCP will be hoping this new way to play does enough to change EVE Online's fortunes -- with the alternative being an Evolve-like fall from grace.

system requirements are quite reasonable, even my old PC should be able to run this.

I don't recommend am MMORPG for anyone, they're designed to be highly addictive and substitute one's actual life. Please be thoughtful before testing this, I'd argue they're dangerous for replicating (thus replacing) emotions which are supposed to unfold in real life.

(PS: Sorry for being a little political here, it's a sensitive issue to me; I'm returning to Overwatch as a casual!)

I played this game from 2005-2015.. it can be quite addictive. Moved to ps4 for a more 'casual' experience, as it does take over your life a bit.

Sorry but I've seen the graphics in real life, and they're terrible.

Warcraft's pretty easy to dip in and out off these days.

Managed to clear all the latest raid content by playing for 4 hours every Wednesday night.

graphics have almost nothing to do with this game.. its mostly played out on overlays, notification lists and custom overviews (if youre playing it properly).

Spreadsheets...IN SPACE

I think best to play is star citizen

Spent a month trying to get into this game. Still didn't have a clue what I was doing. Infinitely boring, while incredibly compelling.

You getting a nosebleed up there, standing on that soap box. I wasted many years on EVE and WOW. That was nobodies fault but my own. All MMOs use the carrot and stick as a business model which the emotionally vulnerable fall into. The only person who can fix that is yourself. Which Is what I did. I can now play MMOs casually and in fact get bored of them pretty quickly. I personally think Social Media is far worse.

There *should* be some legislation over such psychologically manipulative practices, really, as think of how they effect the economy with people diverting their attention to, well, MMORPG's excessively.

played it for a wile when it was free for 3 months or so not the best MMORPG i ever played seemed to spend most of my time getting ambushed going though portholes and mining going to try No Mans sky when i get a comp that will run it lol not holding my breath

Eh? Nosebleed? Do you mean high horse? Though that wouldn't make any sense to me either. They just seem worried about the hold that these types of games can have over people (though I think that only applies to certain types).

I tried this for a few weeks donkeys years ago and did it because I have always had a fascination with space. I just rode around and enjoyed the graphics (looked good to me).

I guess you missed the point on that one

What's the free cap like on skills and ships? Capitals barred only, or any Battleship level caps?

Thanks

(Honest Comment - New Player) Starting playing this last night, was ok...reminded me of Star Trek: Bridge Commander from years back but obviously more modern. It was ok, played for 3hrs then went to bed. Will try it again but can't see me being hooked on it tbh. Worth a shot when it's free. The graphics are nice.

Eh, nothing's so fixed, that's only reaffirming it as a will.
