It is, yeah. They're a digital reseller of PC games (Steam, Origin, uPlay, etc). Buying this game would give you a Steam code that you would redeem to your Steam account. It'll then be available to download and play via the Steam software when your son sets his PC up at Christmas.

Just to add to what Buzz said, when you buy PC games online on any of the stores it should say somewhere how the game is delivered. So, to pick an example completely at random, the Humble Store page for No Man's Sky says:

"No Man's Sky is provided via Steam for Windows. A free Steam account is required. "

So you know that after you've bought the game from the Humble Store you'd go to Steam to download and install it.

In the case of this Garfield game, GamersGate haven't made it quite as clear as that annoyingly. In this case you'll notice that it says "DRM: Steamworks" underneath the BUY button on the page and that's how you know it's also to be downloaded via Steam once you've bought it.

In all these cases, after you've bought the game from whatever store you'll get a 'key' either via email or on your account. You take that key and use it on the Steam software to add the game to your Steam account so you can download it. The key is just a string of letter and numbers that'll look something like 4HIQQ-5XEWE-M9FGM.

The default build you initially download on Steam is indeed single player only but if you opt into the beta update (requires no password), the crossplay P2P online multiplayer is then available.
I've spent 52 hours on this masterpiece.
Bought. Heat added. Thanks.

No, basically, any site sells games like these. Steam is a popular platform for PC games, then there's Origin, Epic Games and so on. But most games are available on Steam. You can buy games full price or on sales there, and they get added to something called a "games library," this is a list of games activated on your account that you've bought or whatever. They cannot be removed unless requested, and you can download them on any PC at the same time. Usually websites like these sell items called "Steam Keys," which are basically redeem codes for games on Steam that are usually significantly cheaper than the RRP on Steam. It's a good way to bargain but these sites support shady business practices like credit card fraud and stolen batches of codes. Buying these keys is also not supporting the game developers, it's basically stealing from them. But if you want a good bargain or don't support the game developers, then key sites are the best way to save money. The most well-known site would be G2A. It's basically an eBay for games and even electronics, with buyer protection and seller ratings. I mostly buy my games from there. And now my Steam account is worth around £1,200.
