1998. HALF-LIFE sends a shock through the game industry with its combination of pounding action and continuous, immersive storytelling. Valve's debut title wins more than 50 game-of-the-year awards on its way to being named "Best PC Game Ever" by PC Gamer, and launches a franchise with more than eight million retail units sold worldwide.

NOW. By taking the suspense, challenge and visceral charge of the original, and adding startling new realism and responsiveness, Half-Life 2 opens the door to a world where the player's presence affects everything around him, from the physical environment to the behaviors even the emotions of both friends and enemies.

The player again picks up the crowbar of research scientist Gordon Freeman, who finds himself on an alien-infested Earth being picked to the bone, its resources depleted, its populace dwindling. Freeman is thrust into the unenviable role of rescuing the world from the wrong he unleashed back at Black Mesa. And a lot of people he cares about are counting on him.

The intense, real-time gameplay of Half-Life 2 is made possible only by Source®, Valve's new proprietary engine technology. Source provides major enhancements in:

Characters: Advanced facial animation system delivers the most sophisticated in-game characters ever seen. With 40 distinct facial "muscles," human characters convey the full array of human emotion, and respond to the player with fluidity and intelligence.

Physics: From pebbles to water to 2-ton trucks respond as expected, as they obey the laws of mass, friction, gravity, and buoyancy.

Graphics: Source's shader-based renderer, like the one used at Pixar to create movies such as Toy Story® and Monster's, Inc.®, creates the most beautiful and realistic environments ever seen in a video game.

AI: Neither friends nor enemies charge blindly into the fray. They can assess threats, navigate tricky terrain, and fashion weapons from whatever is at hand.

Yes, you would think that, but I bought these recently for a 14 year old nephew who just got into PC gaming - he absolutely loved them!

I don't have them. I took 10 years out from gaming between 1999 and 2009. …I don't have them. I took 10 years out from gaming between 1999 and 2009. However, I'm not convinced these games have aged well enough to add to my backlog.

They have aged well enough to risk less than a couple of quid for the whole HL2 experience

But haven't you heard? Half Life 3 is on its way next year!
Two unsurpassed games of their respective generations. Shame the episodes of the second weren't as good as the expansions for the first.

No way!
They’re on sale to clear stock ready for Half Life 3
HL2 is perhaps one of the best games of all time. You'd be insane not to pick it up at this price. HL and the add ons are well worth it too. Insane

The story of HL2 alone is well worth 10x the price.
Unpopular opinion but I think the game is a product of its time

I can see why its held in high regard but by today's standards its just an OK game

In the FPS category? Honestly just name 1 game / franchise in this space that’s more engaging? Not a fanboy, just curious

HL3 Confirmed
This game was so ahead of it's time. It amazes me to this day.
Loved this game
Dreamcast I have it amazing
I've got my old ps3 in the bedroom and the drive is often left with the orange box disc in with the ps2 original half life disc nearby. Sometimes I just need to get go back into the Half Life universe and play it for a while. I just think the atmosphere of the game is amazing. I'm not planning to get get ps5 or the new xbox but intend to build a decent PC setup for emulation and steam purposes and I'm going to make sure I install or the best visual mods for the half life games as well as the many third party HL single player experiences I never got around to. I'm just not into the multiplayer games that the industry is moving towards I like my scripted stories.

Saying that looking forward to playing 'the outer worlds'.

I've got the dreamcast version too of the original Half Life but soo much loading and a lot of slowdown too. Not the ideal system to play it on. PS2 version is much better or of course PC. You can play it with xash3D on android too.
Greatest games of all time

There are actually some rumours floating around that Valve are going to tease or show off a Half Life VR title quite soon, and that it has been in the works for quite some time.

There's also this article gamasutra.com/vie…php which kind of backs up the rumours, like this snippet:

"As reported by PC Gamer, Newell suggested that Valve has always been "a bit jealous" of companies like Nintendo that have the ability to simultaneously create new software and hardware, giving them the power to reshape entire game experiences as they see fit."
Man HL2 for 71p?
