Great price.

Not a bad price, it's a shame their special forces edition doesn't include the map.

Shame the game is rather pants compared to Medieval 2 Total War or Rome.

Lol, Empires blows medieval 2 out of the water. Rome on the otherhand was brilliant.

Can't believe this hasn't been made hot. Its the cheapest price ever for this popular game.

Great price, just a shame the game didn't live up to expectations.

Went back to modified Medieval 2. I mean how can you beat a LOTR mod?

Given the good reviews I'm going to try it, it's not likely to be worse than what they did to rome and medieval 2 after the excellent medieval:tw (dance, puppet empires, dance!).

Not on steam though, I'll wait for the boxed special forces edition to come down in price for the extras.

It is a very excellent instalment.
Took me a little while to get used to, but am glad I persevered.
very low price indeed

Yeah. The bugs made me give up at the start but they seem to have sorted all that now. I love the 'grand' feeling of the campaign map and how its so much more complex yet easy to control.

@EndlessWaves all you get in the box is the manual and a not so great map (I own the box). If you want the extra units then you can buy the special forces edition on steam for £17.49. I think its going to be a long while before the retail box comes down to that price.

yep, manual's not worth very much.
Playing the "Road to Independence" campaign is more important than reading the manual - and you can always get your revenger on the mirkins in the Grand Campaign if the idea of attaining 1776 and all that might make you burst a blood vessel.

I wanted it for the map since the one that came with Rome was pretty good with all the roman province names, in what way is the ETW map not very good? Do you know of a picture of it?

Is this game good? Reviews seem to be very mixed - I have a free download code for Steam but if it isn't any good I don't want to use ~8GB bandwidth

Well the Rome map was coloured and made of high quality paper. Its so good infact that i still have it on my wall. The M2TW map from the collectors edition was black and white on a very thin and flimsy piece of paper. It was lame.

The Empires map isn't as bad as the M2TW map but is again made of thin paper (not like the thick glossy one from Rome) and in a yellowish colour. Not really high quality.

But then again you might want the box because it actually feels like you own the game rather than just downloading it. I only buy off steam if its a really good deal. I like owning a physical box and not having to re-download a game if i need to reinstall.

Good time to buy-the new patch is out on Monday complete with free new units

Good price. Hot.
Boxed Special Forces Edition for 50% more (£22.49 Delivered) from CDwow is a reasonable price for a hard copy.

I was told recently to read the small print with steam downloads as by all accounts they can terminate your enjoyment at anytime, something like they have all rights over the game and how it is played.
Retail box the way to go I am told.

Can someone confirm who has ordered from steam before

A lot of games now use internet authentication now, so in theory whoever controls the authentication server can cut you off at any time and there's nothing you can do about it. When ordering a non-steam game through steam there are often more immediate inconveiniences to consider like their patching system that forces you to use the latest version.

Empire total war specifically must be played through stream whether you buy the retail box or get it from a direct download site so that's not a concern in this case - the only reason to get the retail box is for the quicker install and less bandwidth usage.

Correct. Also if Steam was ever to go bust (which is very unlikely) then having a boxed version means you are still able to install the game and use cracks etc. to play the game that you paid for. I think its pretty likely that if steam ever does go down then the developers or\and for the games that are steam only (such as Empires) and\or Steam will release a workaround to play the games that you own, at leat for those who have the boxed version. At least thats what i hope.

But like i said this is very unlikely to happen anytime soon as Steam is on the rise even during this recession which means it'll be around for a very long time (think at least a decade).

may sound like a daft question but if i was to buy the special forces edition, do i first have to buy the total war game or is the total war game part of the special forces edition.

'Special forces edition' is ETW's collector's edition pack so it consists of the game and a few extras (on steam this is just a few units, the boxed version also includes a map)

Thanks.Would you recommend it compare to the normal as it's only a couple of quid extra?

could someone please buy this and gift it to me? I am in ireland atm and they are asking 30 ****ing euros.

I can paypal gift.

Many thanks

Even if you get the boxed version you will still have to use steam to decode and patch the game.

Comparigon a game vs a mod is unfair.. Empire is a great game in its' own right, it's just that LOTR THird Age is awesome and based on everyones favourite fantasy setting. Mods will come out for Empire too eventually...

£14.99 is an awesome price.

i am a huge total war fan but i've heard empire is bugged to hell, does anyone know if this has been sorted with patches?

BTW rome total war with the Europa Barbarorum mod is the best strategy game ever
