Forty years ago, Harriet Vanger disappeared from a family gathering on the island owned and inhabited by the powerful Vanger clan. Her body was never found, yet her uncle is convinced it was murder - and that the killer is a member of his own tightly knit but dysfunctional family.

He employs disgraced financial journalist Mikael Blomkvist and the tattooed, truculent computer hacker Lisbeth Salander to investigate. When the pair link Harriet's disappearance to a number of grotesque murders from forty years ago, they begin to unravel a dark and appalling family history.

But the Vangers are a secretive clan, and Blomkvist and Salander are about to find out just how far they are prepared to go to protect themselves.

Review
'Stieg Larsson is the best Swedish crime writer of the decade' Kristianstadbladet.

'A violently entertaining trilogy ... may it never end' Arbetarbladet.

'A huge, 500-plus-page opus, a multilayered, multi-character tale by a writer of some considerable power. Full of social conscience and compassion, with great insight into the nature of moral corruption, The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo just knocked me out. During the time I had my nose stuck in its pages, I was thoroughly consumed by the work, and in those periods when I had to put the book down, I found myself grumpy and anxious to return to Larsson's narrative ... when I finally put the book down, I was still unable to sleep, my head filled with the high-definition world that this author has crafted ... already I'm thinking this could be remembered as the best crime novel of 2008 ... This book shows how exhilarating crime fiction can be' Ali Karim, The Rap Sheet website.

'A publishing sensation, an accomplished crime writer who seemingly came from nowhere ... a memorable debut and deserves most of the hype with which it is being published in this country ... Crime fiction has seldom needed to salute and mourn such a stellar talent as Larsson's in the same breath' Sunday Times.

'The ballyhoo is fully justified ... At over 500 pages this hardly sagged ... The novel scores on every front - character, story, atmosphere' The Times.

'What a cracking novel! I haven't read such a stunning thriller debut for years. The way Larsson interweaves his two stories had me in thrall from beginning to end. Brilliantly written and totally gripping' Minette Walters.
Observer
A striking novel, full of passion, an evocative sense of place and subtle insights into venal, corrupt minds
Independent
Our surrender to the novel is guaranteed

Intelligent, complex, with a gripping plot and deeply intriguing characters. The author's early death is a great loss.

From the Inside Flap

Financial journalist Mikael Blomkvist has made his living uncovering the corrupt and crooked practices of Stockholm's leading financiers in his magazine, Millennium. But one expose unexpectedly backfires, and Blomkvist's reputation is in tatters. When he is offered an investigative job by powerful businessman Henrik Vanger, he is in no position to refuse. But he is surprised to find it has nothing to do with high finance - this time, it is a case of murder. Many years ago, Henrik's niece, Harriet, disappeared during a family gathering on the island owned and inhabited by the Vangers. No-one saw her leave the island, and no body was ever found. Even so, Henrik is convinced that she was murdered by a member of his own family - the tightly knit but dysfunctional Vanger clan. Blomkvist is soon in over his head. He has linked Harriet's disappearance to a number of gruesome murders from forty years ago, but it has become too dangerous to proceed alone. He needs a competent assistant, and he gets one: the gifted and conscience-free computer specialist, Lisbeth Salander. This truculent young woman has problems of her own. She in unwilling to take orders, rides a motorbike like a Hell's Angel and handles makeshift weapons with a skill born of rage. This improbably pair unravel a dark and appalling family history. But the Vangers are a secretive clan, and Blomkvist and Salander are about to find out just how far they are prepared to go to protect themselves.
From the Back Cover

Crusading liberal journalist and author Stieg Larsson died suddenly, shortly after delivering three novels to his Swedish publisher. Tragically, he did not live to see the phenomenon that his work has become. Famous journalist sentenced to prison: Mikael Blomkvist, editor of Millennium magazine, is found guilty of slandering billionaire financier Hans-Erik Wennerstrom. Henrik Vanger, C.E.O. of the powerful Vanger Corporation, revives hunt for solution to niece's disappearance: Harriet Vanger vanished 40 years ago from secluded Hedeby Island. Lisbeth Salander declared legally incompetent: Computer hacker Lisbeth (code-name “wasp”) loses control of her own affairs. The notoriously delinquent 24-year-old surveillance agent could not be reached for comment. “Contrary to so many other thrillers, powerful though they may be, Stieg Larsson's will not be forgotten once closed” Mona Chollet, Le Monde
About the Author

Stieg Larsson was a financial journalist. He finished the three novels that are the "Millennium Trilogy" and then telephoned a publisher before delivering all three typescripts. He died very soon after the publication of the first one in Sweden.

Fantastic series!

Saw the Swedish film first & loved it. Read the book in just a few days (which is very fast for me haha). The book is far better & more brutal.

Bit sceptical about the fourth book. After Larsson died, they've hired someone else to write the fourth book - however, his partner doesn't agree with it being released, and it doesn't include any of the work Larsson had done on his fourth book.

(There was all sorts of legal stuff aorund the fact his partner legally has no rights to his notes etc as they didn't marry for security reasons and had disputes with Larsson's parents and siblings)

Different version? Sure I bought all 3 on a deal on Amazon, but I could buy this one as well.

I started to watch the films after reading all 3 books but I only watched about 30 minutes it just doesn't match up to your imagination of the characters in the book or the snowy scenery and Daniel Craig is not how I imagined kalle blomkvist to look like. The books were superb and I can't wait for the girl in the spiders web which is available for pre order on amazon.
