Stop or Reduce Cold Calling, Free registration with The Telephone Preference Service (TPS)

Welcome to the Telephone Preference Service (TPS)

The Telephone Preference Service (TPS) is a free service. It is the official central opt out register on which you can record your preference not to receive unsolicited sales or marketing calls. It is a legal requirement that all organisations (including charities, voluntary organisations and political parties) do not make such calls to numbers registered on the TPS unless they have your consent to do so.

Organisations with which you have an ongoing relationship, for example those who regard you as a customer, (or in the case of charities - a donor) may well gather your consent during the early stages of your relationship with them and will therefore be entitled to call you even if your number is registered on TPS, unless you have previously told them specifically that you object to them calling you for marketing purposes.

The TPS can accept the registration of mobile telephone numbers, however it is important to note that this will prevent the receipt of marketing voice calls but not SMS (text) messages. If you wish to stop receiving SMS marketing messages, please send an 'opt-out' request to the company involved.

As TPS registration only prevents marketing calls, organisations will still be able to call you for the purposes of genuine market research.

Before you register with TPS...

It is worth reflecting on the fact that registering may well prevent you from receiving relevant and worthwhile information. For instance charities find telemarketing to be an economical way to raise awareness and much needed support.

If you are happy to receive telemarketing calls from some companies but not others, contact the companies who you do not wish to hear from and ask them to remove your details from their call lists. All companies - including charities and voluntary organisations - are required to respect your wishes.

The Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) is responsible for the enforcement of these regulations. Please click on the useful links page on this site for their details and for more information on this area of the law.

been registered with them for years. complete waste of time. still get cold calls, report them to TPS and you get a generic respnse saying they cannot do anything about them unless you know the company involved, the name of the person calling, the exact time (to the second) that you were called, and even then if its from outside the UK they still can't do anything

They are spineless

ie it works to a point

but if a company calls you anyway despite being on the list and you make a complaint, they say there is nothing they can do other than ask the company not to call again

they have no powers whatsoever to stop people calling you

I found this out the hard way when I was getting calls for a previous owner of the telephone number I got, in the end I had to threaten criminal prosecution for harassment which eventually stopped it

works really well for me and NEVER get cold called any more.

I take it you read the FAQ and went to the ICO?

10. I submitted a complaint to TPS regarding an unsolicited call I have received despite being registered on TPS for more than 28 days. What action have you taken?

All complaints received will be acknowledged and processed by our complaints team. We will write to the organisation involved asking for an explanation of why it has called a TPS registered number and request that it removes the number from its call lists. As the TPS has no enforcement powers, we will pass all the complaints received over to the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO), who are the UK independent supervisory authority reporting directly to the UK Parliament. It is the ICO's responsibility to look at non-compliant organisations and take appropriate action. If you wish to follow up on a complaint you have made, please contact the ICO directly. Their details can be found under the useful links section of the website.

excuse me, how do you ask a recording what company he works for???

Wanna know the best way to stop people calling??

Buy a Carbon Monoxide alarm, get a call and answer it, when the drivel starts pouring push the test button on the alarm while holding the alarm to the receiver. They stop calling after a while*

* Does not work on recordings of course.

Also believe the TPS service is NOT free, they ask for a one of charge of about £35 If im thinking of the right company.

you can complain al you want, you can follow the procedures completely. they have no power to FORCE the company to remove you. most reputable companies will comply. unfortunately most reputable companies don't use cold calling and the diesreputable ones will say its not a marketing call its a survey (then try to sel you something) or even worse they'll say you recently completed a survey somewhere and asked to be contacted.

if the TPS did what they claim then brilliant, but in the most part they don't.

deary me, did you even read my post. The TPS write to the company if you complain and also the ICO. If they persist then you then report them to the ICO and they get fined.

no wonder you get cold calls then really. I never give out my telno unless absolutely essential. I usually put a false one.

I work for market research myself so I have rung up many tps and ex-directory numbers. As genuine market research, (i.e: no selling or marketing involved), we are not covered by these services.
If you are on any blocking service and you still get unsolicited calls from sales people, the best practice is not to react badly, instead you ask for their company name, number and ask politely to not to ring you again. Then follow it up with TPS by reporting and etc.
For market researches, nobody has power to block them other than the company itself, so based on my experience, the phrase 'not interested, please don't call me again' works great. Because, we'll have to put your number in refusal list and never call again.
In case if you do get a call again from the same company, Market Research Society MRS will take care of that company. MRS can be reached at 0500396999.
Hope this helps a little better.

hmmmm yes i did read your email, yes i did contact the ICO and its them that informed me that they have no power to force a company to comply. its them who told me what details i would require to even get them to write to the company and it was them to told me that most companies who do use cold calling are based outside the UK and they cannot even ask them to stop.

i just say hello west yorkshire police.they soon put phone down

Waste of time! I still get them! They make me laugh as they cannot pronounce my surname - Archer, they always ask for Mr Akar, Nornally I ask if the can comprehend the english language, which the reply yes, I then add "head, boil, your and go" arrange them into a sentance.

I registered for this a while back and found it was rubbish, still get the cold calls

I've said it before whenever this crops up,i registered years ago and i don't get any,but nor do i put my real phone number on things unless necessary,i think like someone said above, people add their real numbers to competition entries etc and that's probably where people get your number from.

Even if it works on a % of the cold callers, whats to lose ?
Free... Sign up online in minutes.
Not putting your tel no in the boxes when you register on web sites also helps

If you follow the following steps you will soon stop getting cold calls (doesn't work with recordings)
Me - Hello
Caller - Is that Mr Smith/Jones/Archer etc
Me - No, but I will go and get him for you

You then place the handset next to the phone and go back to whatever you were doing.
Go back to the phone after 15mins and there will be noone there

Sorted

Oh the irony!

Signed up, thanks. I don't tend to get these calls anyway (lucky I guess) but it's good to know i'm on the list.

I've been on this for years too but still get the so called silent calls - the voice activated carp that drives me insane. Asked Virgin to stop the number but they couldn't help. Instead they put me onto a website which claims to be able to stop them. It didn't. The only advice I'd give is to accidentally transpose 2 digits of your telephone number when filling in forms. Works better than any filter service
