Guide to stamping out junk mail
Other Junk - Opt out of paper directories

Every year some 75 million paper directories are distributed to UK households and businesses by Yell, Thomson Local and BT alone*. Given that the majority of people now have easy access to the internet to find information, the amount of paper wasted on these books is truly astonishing.

Many - if not most - paper directories are never used and delivering these books door-to-door is hard to justify at a time when both the British Government and the European Union are aiming to drastically reduce waste.
You can opt out!

To add insult to injury, Yell, Thomson Local and BT don’t advertise the fact that you don't have to receive their directories. You can simply contact them and ask to be opted out. All they need is your name and address

Thanks

What has this got to do with the British and EU government? Yell, Thomson Local and BT are private companies. Also, they have a point. My mum does not and will never have the internet (she is old and stuck in her ways). Just because you do not need it does not mean others don't. It is not a waste for her! Very selfish!

This is not really a freebie. It is chance for a obsessive pro-green facist to yet again guilt us out of one of lifes small pleasures. Some people like the idea that if they are going to be ripped off by a tradesman then at least he had to pay for an advert in the local directory and did not just set up a free website and get told who is available by Google/Bing. Also, what do you do if the internet is down? Hide until the bad times are over. Well, you cannot look up you local trademan since you do not have a directory. Moreover, computers use electricity so ditching the directory a real enery saver? Next you will be telling me to share my bath water!

junk mail is annoying yes.
but it keeps alot of jobs going.

You got the word mixed up that's all. He didn't explain himself though. It's refuse instead of refuge. A refuge is a place of safety

How dumb are you?

This is a FREEBIE for those wishing to opt out. Its not forcing your mum to stop getting her directory.

Does anyone know if this is a safe site? You give a fair bit of personal info.

this will do nothing to stop all the pizza and indian take away rubbish that comes through the door,
and these directories have a use not always rubbish.

Heat added - less junk mail is a Good Thing(TM)

I only posted it cos I'm fed up with getting these huge bits of paper that go straight in my bin and what most councils put in landfilloh well, I can see why people dont bother posting stuff any more

You could always recycle them. Or put a note on your door saying no junk mail thanks.

seems like your the one thats doing all the whinging,

I opted out of phonebooks and yellow pages a couple of years ago, now they still get delivered but without my name & address on them.... ffs!

That time of the month csiman?

I don't think this is a hot deal nor a cold one, I can't see what this website will do to assist junk mail levels. As for the phone directories, yes they are a lot of paper but people still heavily rely on them.

Thanks
