Saw the recent lamb deals at a great price of £3.99 per kg. Been in Lidl today and they are only £3.79 per kilo of New Zealand lamb. According to website they weigh between 1.8-2.6kg.

Hope there's not too many baaaad puns and gifs.

EDIT - Aldi appear to have pricematched Lidl, discounted price will be charged at the till.

Nearly all abattoirs are certified for Halal slaughter as this gives producers the flexibility to export to different markets. Not all is certified and licensed as such though.

All animals are stunned prior to slaughter due to animal welfare laws and there is no religious slaughter exemption clause.

Hope this helps.

Hot! I've just been to Lidl and the lamb wasn't highlighted as a special offer - even the checkout op was surprised at the price, she thought it was a mistake on the till at first!

netto, £3.50 a kilo if you have one local ;-)

Yes, New Zealand Lamb only do Halal slaughter for its export markets. It's biggest market are Malaysia, Indonesia and Saudi Arabia. Some of it's exports end up here in the UK at this time of year because the price are cheap. If you want non-Halal you have to buy british or Welsh lamb- these are definitely non- halal. But ALL New Zealand Lamb products are Halal in the UK.

£3.50 each for half a leg.

still £3.50 a kilo compared to £3.79. just means that you have to cook more than one depending on how much you need!

Just a quick note on quality...the lamb last night was excellent and will be followed by a lamb and mint pie tonight. Does anyone know how long this promotion is lasting for?

Till they run out probably which at this price won't be too long.

That's true, they have run out at my local Lidl

love how they get fresh lamb from the other side of the world and fresh chicken from Brasil and Thailand...on a slow boat (from China?)

Got one eventually after trying 3 branches. Huge hunk of lamb for £8!

The leg of lamb on offer at Aldi is BRITISH
and I paid £3.95 per Kilo for it. New Zealand
is quite a distance away so how is it still fresh
when it gets here - I think we should be told.

So pointless, as lots of Muslims won't buy it as it is not 'proper' halal.

Just got back from Aldi with a huge leg of lamb, sticker says £10.71 but till receipt says £9 odd so must be discounted ?

I don't get this "fresh" point of view, meat needs to hung to age it. The last thing you want is a "fresh" piece of meat straight off the animal.

Vac packing is very efficient, if you prefer UK lamb to NZ then fine, but it's probably not any "fresher" than NZ lamb.

Be sure to use this a few days before the best before date, bought some for mothers day with 4 days left on the date and it was rancid. Lidl customer services weren't interested.

Where where?

is new Zealand lamb halal

All New Zealand lamb is halal.

I think halal meat in the UK should be banned. Certain religious groups cannot eat halal meat, it is a complete nonsense to cater for a minority who make a lot of noise and spout discrimination at anything.

However, the del itself is good - voted hot

Bought a leg from Aldi after work labelled up at £3.99 a kilo but went through till at £3.79 so must be price matching.

Funny how NZ is pretty much the biggest provider of halal lamb in the world then supplying many countries such as those in the Middle East and South East Asia. As long as the animal is not killed by the stunning, then it is still Halal.

Aldi originally stated £3.99 on their website but seem to have price matched Lidl so the packaging will be wrong but you will be charged the lower price at the till.

Our right to religious freedom extends to everyone. The issue here is producers trying to cut costs and mainly a lack of labelling. After all, Muslims didn't campaign and protest to make all meat Halal slaughtered.

Even if religiously slaughtered meat were banned, the UK would never ban the import of meat such as NZ lamb which is almost certainly going to be at least Halal slaughtered so your point doesn't really matter in this regard.

The only issue I have with Shechita is the complete lack of stunning but I don't think that will ever change. Most of Halal is stunned but I would prefer all of it to be stunned. Regardless, the government has already declined to discuss that issue despite a petition by the BVA and RSPCA with by 100k+ signatures calling for an end to non-stun slaughter.

Had this leg last week. Not impressed with quality of meat

You are missing the point. They may claim it is halal, but many Muslims will not buy stunned meat, as they do not consider it halal.

No, it is the opinion of a small minority of UK Muslims, that take a very literal view of the teachings.

And of course, it is barbaric. If you believe your religion demands that you can only eat meat that has been killed in a cruel manner, then become a vegetarian.

Jesus if the price flops much further they will be paying us to take it away, must be alot of lamb in circulation at the moment for all these price drops, already sitting on 2 legs, perhaps I should go for all 4,
