This would be amazing (and it is) but having to have a .info domain isn't that great, which is a real shame.

Some people! Jezzas! What do you want for a bleeding quid?!?!?!?

changed my mind

123-reg are ok, have a couple of domains with them, can't comment on how they are for transferring domains to another company though. For this price this is very hot.

Ah but... wouldn't you rather pay 2 quid for friday's Euro Lottery Numbers? 85 Million Quid!!!!!!!!!!!! :w00t::w00t:

There main point seems to be the software which is free under dreamspark anyway (for students).

If you were looking for a windows host anyway, with a crippled domain then this is hot; otherwise It's most certainly not. If they had instead let you have the linux hosting for this price even with the crippled domain it'd most certainly be hot!

A domain that is recognisable by most people in the UK. .info isn't exactly common and won't be remembered.

You're telling us that '.info' won't be remembered???? No wondered they say that the education system is dumbing down! If your site is interesting people will link to it, it won't make any difference what the flamin name is. If it's full of dross then '.com .co.uk etc' won't make the site any more interesting/popular! It ain't rocket science! It's a quid and you're whinging!http://yeehahsmileys.com/smilies/rolleye0011.gif

Alright I know it's a good deal for a quid, my point is there arn't many websites out there with the .info tag as it isn't mainstream - people usually assume the suffix is .co.uk or .com - and that was my point. Yes good for a very small website or personal site I agree.

However, It has nothing to do with the education system thank you very much; saying that was totally inappropriate tbh.

JPS, lets call a truce. You seem like a canny lad. My reference to the 'education system' was linked to the OP.... 'Student Web Hosting'. Perhaps I should have stated that? I thought it was obvious but then... I shouldn't have thought that.

Anyway, I didn't mean to offend so if I did I shouldn't have and I'm sorry.

Thanks, do appreciate that. No hard feelings.

The hosting for £12 a year is an 'ok' deal but the domain and MS tools are an asset.

An info domain is £9.99 a year (some places have it for 99p for first year). Once the year of hosting is up just transfer the domain to your other host (or stay with 123-reg).

The .info TLD is becoming more popular and can be rembered if used for the right website. You could always buy the .co.uk domain (£6 from 123-reg) and redirect it to the .info domain.

I use]justhost.com and have been very happy with their service and prices (live chat help is a winner).

just throwing it in there

im wanting a domain name to basically setup a small site and link it to my isp's webspace.

but I also want an email address with the same prefix, can anyone point me in the right direction?

An offer that isn't misleading....

I contacted them about this as they have sent me the email a number of times now, and the offer DOES NOT include VAT (IIRC this is illegal when selling to the public)

As said all the software they offer is free to students via Dreamspark and MSDNAA or even directly free from MS (Such as Visual Studio C# Express 2008)

I dont trust anywhere that when you try leave their site you get a popup saying

"are you sure you want to leave"

Man, I know I'm probably being ignorant, but, why would students need their own website anyway...? I guess for a quid it is the right price but... don't you need that quid for beans?

I use zFast.co.uk. Same price but better specifications but no free domain.

Only problem with this is that you need a ".ac.uk" email address to qualify - fine for uni students but not okay for sixth formers like myself!

A good price but like others have said all of the Dreamspark software is free if you qualify for this anyway. I'd probably look at 1and1 for hosting though, unlimited bandwidth and still very cheap.

Interesting, I already have a domain name too so .info thing isn't an issue.

What software is included? Is there a full list?

i don't see why people are moaning, this is hot. You get a MS SQL database which I personally need, if anyone else can find that for £12 (+2.10 VAT) with a free domain feel free to point it out

edit.. thanks for sharing OP

If you mean the dream spark thing? its pretty much everything, last time i looked it was all recent versions of windows including 7, office 2007, visual studio, visio etc

microsoft.com/uk/…spx

I know this is a bit off topic, but hopefully someone could provide me a recommendation or two!

I'm currently have a domain and hosting plan (separately), and looking to move the hosting. I need somewhere with quite a bit of bandwidth allowance; unlimited will be ideal, but 20GB+ will be enough. The hosting will need to have at least 500MB disk space, as well as be UK-based servers and allow PHP and have at least one MYSQL database, as I'll be running wordpress on it.

Any suggestions? I currently pay £19.99 a year for my hosting (1GB disk, 10GB bandwidth/month), and looking for something up to £100 per year.

I have no recommendations for you but have a look on quidco or topcashback, you will probably be able to get a decent chunk of your £100 back theres loads of hosting with cashback. Just google the companies and see what they're like.

1and1.co.uk - unlimited bandwidth on all packages. I've had great support from them and there's a sale on at the moment.

What list did you look at? The only thing on that list you said was is Visual Studio. They have never done desktop operating systems on Dreamspark with possible exception of Windows XP

Dreamspark provides:
# CCR DSS Toolkit 2008 R2
# Expression Studio 3
# Robotics Developer Studio 2008 R2
# SQL Server 2008
# SQL Server Express
# Virtual PC
# Visual Basic 2008 Express
# Visual C++ 2008 Express
# Visual C# 2008 Express
# Visual Studio 2010 Ultimate Beta 2
# Visual Studio 2008
# Visual Studio 2005
# Visual Web Developer 2008 Express
# Windows Embedded CE 6.0
# Windows Server 2008 R2
# Windows Server 2008
# Windows Server 2003
# XNA Game Studio 3.1

I don't see any Visio, Windows 7 or Office there......

use weebly.com is free. like mine. www.mjggallery.weebly.com easy as that really.

Google 123-reg and you will find how bad this useless company are.

Look for the secret link, it provides a discount code.

Unfortunately it does not look like it can be applied to the special offer of £2.95 per month.

Whoever tries this offer, let us all know if it can.

Im not so sure on just host. Asked one of the reps if i could test transfer speeds, he said no but said all servers run at 100 MBPS. I asked if this was mega bits or bytes. He didn't know what i meant.

Not sure really.

zymic.com/
this is good one. try 2day

This is the worst bloody deal I have ever gone for. I took it out a year ago as a student for around £15 for the whole year with the domain name. I had to register with my .ac.uk student email address. I have just logged onto my internet banking to see they have auto renewed this contract and have charged me just under £100. I don't even use it any more.
I am assuming they have emailed me regarding auto renewing, but I graduated in the summer, so I don't have access to my email. I am now left with a huge bill. Can't believe it! Not a hot deal, more like borderline scam.
