This one works without having to go the phone app - might suit some people better than the current reader.

Run your business in your store or on the go, the magic happens inside the device.

Handle all transactions easily with one device that connects automatically to the 3G network via the built-in SIM card. No data costs. No WiFi nor smartphone needed.
Community Updates
£69 PLUS VAT so the price is actually £82.80 mods need to change the price.

Surprised to see this voted cold. £30 off a £99 card reader. Maybe i’ve missed the whole point of this app. I’m intrigued as to why the silent cold voters haven’t commented on this but vote cold no explanation?
1.69% tranaction fee is good, I have both Paypal and iZettle readers, both manage to sometimes lose the phone at critical moments so I like the idea of a built in sim card.

I suspect it’s people not understanding this is a 3G standalone model.
Good spot be interested to see which network they are runing off this. Assume it can be used on WIFI still as well ?
Sounds a great idea but like most people I always have my phone with me and it only takes a few seconds after switching my Izettle card reader on to establish a connection to take payments.
To be honest though if these were around £40 I would bite.

No WiFi at least not according to online manual only mentions being able to connect via 3G
Remember that £69 price tag is without VAT, so it will be £82.80 inc VAT. Considerably more expensive than the £14.50 inc VAT price tag in the recent Rymans deal HERE for the previous [good] model

That card reader on Rymans is a completely different reader than the 3g one. I have that reader and its the one that you need to use your mobile device via the app to take card payments. The reader I posted is a 3G reader meaning that you can take card payments without connecting your device to the reader. Clearly people are voting cold without actually reading the deal.

Yes I know it's different, so far as you don't need a phone, (I have one of the Rymans ones). However, if you have no problem with your phone/wifi connection this would be just throwing money away.
If this were half the VAT inc price, it would be a far better deal.

Also, the device will rise to £99 [£120 in VAT] on 1st November, making the reader even less of an attractive thing to purchase for a small business/sole trader.

Ok so this particular deal isn’t for you and may not be for everyone. Your link to Rymans is a different card reader all together so cant really be compared in price. I use the reader you direct us to and have found a few connectivity problems so for me its something that i’m looking at and maybe some other people might find this price attractive. As you mention the price will go up but is that not the case with most of the deals posted on here hence why deals are posted when theres a particular offer on a product?

Not defensive merely correcting the inaccurate facts. Pleasure chatting with you.
lol just found this thread and surprised at the cold votes so added a bit of heat. It's definitely the simplest and most convenient reader on the market, no messing about with tethering via bluethooth draining battery or losing connection, no need for phone/tablet/app etc, no data charges, and simple to use even for non tech-minded staffs or customers.

and yes it's £69+vat which is quite pricey (would be even less attractive at rrp £99), but for the convenience/simplicity factor alone, if you use the reader over a period of few years and spread the cost that way it's not bad. Would have been much better if sumup priced it at max of £49+vat.

I couldn’t agree more. I’m surprised myself by the cold votes and the deal police jumping on it. Glad at least one person took the time to read the deal before pouncing on it. Thanks for the heat.
Bought one of these and it was delivered today (18 Oct) via UPS. No dispach email was sent, however a "We are happy to inform you that your order 2xxxxxx is prepared and ready to be shipped to the following delivery address:" It arrived 3 working days after ordering.

My experience so far.

Having a frustratng time with "Connection error" at the moment. Had to speak to online chat.

Overall it's a nice reader...it just will NOT connect Online chat are as useful as a chocolate teapot.
Apprently you can't use another sim in it according to support...although I may try one. I just keep getting "Connection error..."
So frustrating.

I Tried another sim (Vodafone) and it just immediatly came up with "Connection error..." so it must be a proprietary sim.

Rang support after the online chat. They cannot understand why it isn't connecting. The sim is one of those that selects the nearest network, (multi network) but I've tried it literally dozens of times and it just keeps coming back with "connection error...". Even drove 2 miles to test it just in case it was a blackspot in my area.

They have escalated the case, they think it "may" possibly be faulty unit.

The reader itself is quite nice. The screen is "touch" for when you enter your email and pw. You can change how you connect, via settings, either GSM or Bluetooth. If you change to BT, the screen changes to the standard "SumUp Air" screen. Tomorrow I'm going to take it out and use it in live conditions via the BT connection.

Hopefully SumUp will call me to let me know what will happen.

All in all, it is a piece of kit released, IMHO, too soon and hasn't been tested fully.

I'll post more updates as and when I get it sorted.

thanks for the info so it looks like the 3G reader have all the functions of the original reader just with the big added benefit of 3G internet connection making it able to operate independently without the phone, just shame about your 3G connection errors, hope it's just a one off.

Yeah.
I forgot to say the keys light up a nice blue for darker conditions. Here is a pic of it with the standard "Air" screen.

35684075-r03XR.jpg

Just had an email from SumUp regarding my unit.

"The issue you have experienced with your 3G reader is currently being investigated by our product and development team.

In the mean time, we have issued you a free replacement reader, which is being sent with express shipping.

We will be in touch with you shortly once we have arranged for a postage paid return of the faulty reader."

So I await the new one and will let you know if and how it works.
"We're excited to announce that we're adding more cards to our portfolio!

We know that especially international customers would like to pay with Discover, Diners Club and China Union Pay cards, and now you don't have to turn them down. With SumUp you can now accept all major cards - Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Discover, Diners Club and China Union Pay!

And the best news: You can accept payments with Discover, Diners and China Union Pay cards at no additional cost."
UPDATE:

I have just recieved the new[replacement] unit SumUp are sending me a freepost sticker to post the faultyy one back.

I am pleased to say it connected as it should do to their network.

I have done test £1 contactless payments and bot went through successfully and quickly. If you want to send a reciept, you can use the touch screen to send via email or SMS.

You can view the "last transaction" on the devie, and there is a transaction history too.

If you wish to refund anyone, you will still need the app on your device to go into the "Sales History" then you select the transaction and do the refund from there.

I will test it over the next few days, and hopefully will not have the failed bluetoth connection issues I've had sometimes with the other SumUp reader, and indeed my previous [now sold#] PayPal Here reader.

If it goes as well as the 2 tests I did earlier, I will be happy with this purchase.

@artnada further up this thread you were telling me how this was expensive and that the card reader from Rymans was the same reader albeit without the 3G function. You went on to tell me that you thought I being defensive about this deal. I see you have indeed went on to but the reader and so far you seem happy with your purchase. May I ask why the change of heart?

Because although the Rymans one was, and indeed still is a good deal for the machine, It failed me a couple of times as far as bluetooth connection issues. It also failed me again twice this morning! As you can appreciate, it is highly frustrating, and indeed, totally embarressing, when a customer just wants to "tap and go" and you're there fumbing about like you don't know what you're doing.

So, I took a punt with this. As it is complaetly independent from the phone, then there will be no isues with bluetooth connection errors.

Move on mate lol It's only a website don't take things so personal if your deal goes cold. Remember, it's not only me that voted that way A lot of others did too. Some you win, some you lose. I have in the past, and simply moved on and not taken it personal.
It's only a website

Go and buy one and tell others of your experience here and help others that way. If they see your experience, and mine and others, then maybe you might get a bit more heat.

Maybe that's why I'm letting others know what it is like.

Enjoy your evening.

No. The price ISN'T a good price IMHO. £120 [as is now] is expensive for what it is, when you don't even get some sort of credit toward "card fees".

However, as explaineed above, if this stops me having problems with my customers being unable to pay via card, which as you can appreciate, is very frustrating for everyone, then that's the price I am willing to pay!

And in all honesty mate, you're beginning to sound a bit petulent. The fact is NOT ONLY myself voted cold, but it appears around approx 20 others voted it cold too based on the -88 score.

Like I said....move on and try not to take things so personal next time.

Do what Bob does. When Bob sees something that annoys him on the internet, Bob moves on!

Good luck. I will be interested to hear your experience.
thanks for the updates, good to know you've got it sorted and sumup's CS seems to be good.

Finally order this 3G reader this afternoon, long story short had problems getting the £69 price, whether that's through the OP's link or google search through the official website (both showing £99), phone sumup CS and was told there's special landing page that gets you the £69 price sumup.co.uk/wel…3g/ or if you enter this code: 3G69GBP during checkout which should also work.

Looking forward to receiving it and testing and using it, hopefully no connection errors.

Maybe query with them why they accept customer not present for one reader and not the other. Could be something to do with more authentication via mobile.
UPDATE:

So I've used the card machine 5 times since receiving it yesterday, and I must say, not once have I had a problem with connections.

Takes a bit of getting used to because I keep going to my phone app first. Old age me thinks.

When first turning the device on, it connects to the "cellular connection", which takes around 5 - 10 seconds. Once connected, it sits on the screen waiting to accept amount inputs from the keypad. It goes into auto standby after around 5 minutes, I think. When you press the power button again, it take around 3 seconds to wake up correctly.

Contactless Payments are relativly fast, around 2-3 seconds from tap to "Payment Approved" message. It will ask if you wish to send a receipt via email or SMS or none.

WIthin the Menu, you can view all transactions, and send a receipt via the options.
If you have to do a refund, it appears you have to do it thru the app, or your online Dashboard, so it's advisable to keep the app installed in case you need it. You can also set it to ask if the customer wishes to "tip". Although I'm not cheeky enough to set this to on

Customers seem to be very impressed by it too.

Overall, I am impressed by it. Just a shame it's the hefty price it is with no discount on card fees. Even if they gave a £10 fee credit that would be appreciated. But Hey ho.

My question to sumup was as follows...
Please can you tell me if cardholder not present transactions are to be added to your 3g machine in the future?
I ask the question because the normal portable machine, that is connected to the app in your phone by bluetooth, does indeed support cardholder not present transactions

Their reply is as follows...
Thank you for contacting SumUp Support.
There are no plans for any of the SumUp Readers to be able to accept card payments without there being physical contact with the card.
If you would like to be considered for virtual terminal, which is the only way possible customer not present payments can be processed with SumUp please send us a written request via the dashboard, once you have signed up.

If you have any further questions please feel free to contact us.

So according to SumUp, cardholder not present payments are not possible on any of their physical machines
Finally received dispatch email, but was surprised it's coming from Germany, and scheduled to arrive on Wednesday, had hoped for Monday...

Thanks for pointing this out we take payments at running races, this will mean I can hand it over to whoever is in charge of registration. Only downside is the VAT on top of the £69.
