i thought it was quite reasonable...what's missing for general usage?

I would guess they could be complaining about the lack of MKV format given that it is HDMI output.

I have a Western Digital HDTV which is capable of MKV playback but I can't be bothered with the download time for them. I downloaded Doctor Who last week in HD and 'yes' the picture quality was better but not really that much better.

MKV is essential for 1080p. If you only play on SD resolution, you can get cheaper players from many places (ebuyer, play, amazon, etc.).

I find that a good remote control is also important. Often you have small bendy and fiddly controls and hit the wrong button because they are too close together. I have one of those fiddly controls and would definately look for a quality remote comtrol with future purchases.

Just found a picture of the remote control on ebuyer. It is one of those fiddly, bendy once. That is the one I have. Awful.

So does this play 1080p files then? Or is it just stuck to playing SD files and "upscaling" them (which HDTVs do anyway)?

Sausage fingers!

But surely if it did it would be triple the price?

I'm not sold on the 'supposed' magical benefits of HD.

It's like people thinking Ipods are the dogs gonads of MP3 players when they are far from it. I just don't see a remarkable difference worth paying the premium for. Especially when this player upscales to 1080 for £23 quid.

As you say I generally ignore the 1.7gb mkv version of Lost in favour of the 350mb divx file

Same here. Searched for media players on both sites and other than one's that play MKV files (which I can't be arsed downloading for the negligible benefit) , for double/triple the price, there is nothing better for cheaper as far as I can see. But then I may not be looking hard enough
