If the robber can fit through the hole the size of a cat flap.

I guess you could say that about any pet flap.

Is the dual scan the one where you can keep certain kitties inside when you want them to?

Yep that's the one. We have 3 outdoor cats and one indoor cat so need one that will only let certain cats out. The connect is the more expensive version £150ish and is app controlled settings etc.

I got a Golden Retriever and envisage something like this happening haha!
This is a good price, I paid £100 10 years ago for one (and that was cheap at the time). Mine lasted about 8 years before the (plastic) mechanism wore out (at which point I paid about £50 for a replacement). Food consumption dropped dramatically, due to only feeding the cat I own. Batteries last well enough - but forget rechargables (which are generally no use for low power long time period applications generally), just invest in decent Duracells or whatever.

The comments about security relate no more to this cat flap as any other (although why you would unscrew the cover rather than stick your boot through the flimpsy plastic window I do not know). So as a general observation that's great - and if anyone is stupid enough to put this within arm's reach of the door handle and leave the keys there perhaps they will benefit from the advice. But it's no reason not to swap your normal flap for one of these. You cat not being chipped would really be the only one that exists, for me!

I agree, i'm sure if cat flap robberies were such a prevalent issue, they'd ask if you had one on home insurance quotes haha
Yeah pretty sure cat burglars don't need one of these to get in. In fact by definition they do not.

Anyone looking into breaking into your home would not waste their time doing this on the off chance the key maybe left in the other side. If they wanted to reach through any cat flap they would just smash through the plastic door. A burglar is far far far more likely to smash through a window to gain entry.
The connect is amazing. Fetch have it on offer for £100, including the hub, every so often. Worth every penny. Can control from your phone and tells you if your cat is in or out (for those that are excellent at hiding )

I've got the connected one and I do like it a lot. Because it's connected, it has the ability to let you put on a curfew for your kitties and check if they're in or out from the App. What I will say though is the app is very poor and could be a lot better.

Chews through batteries though.

True but I wonder what your insurance company would say if they saw a knowingly unsecure fixture?

If installed in those PVC doors with foam at the bottom then its also easy to cut through doors in a matter of seconds/minutes. They will still have to do this to gain proper access.

True, though not a bad way to gain access without making too much fuss.

Wish I'd not brought this up now.
Ordered this morning. Looks good. The smart home version is £110, but I can't justify that purr-chase

have a look at getting a ac->dc 6v power converter (each battery is 1.5v so 4 batteries = 6v) so its permanently connected to the mains, may require some small adjustments so the wire can go into the battery compartment and a wire or two to be soldered but saves on batteries!
Got this one for my cat. Who looks at it as if it's something out of Quatermass. Cat flap training may be continuing for some time.

Regarding the comments about security and insurance companies. Aside from the insurance aspect surely you'd want to ensure it was fitted properly from your own peace of mind, and that it probably would look awful if fitted wrong. Practically though, common sense is required. Lock the door and keep the key out of sight from outside. Leaving it available (visibly on the side or in the lock) provides a would-be intruder with a potential opportunity to obtain said key and get in.

Each time I read the title I see 'Flat Cap'.

I'm not dyslexic but do live in Yorkshire.
We have one of these back home, and my brother-in-law got one fitted after they adopted our cats. In our old, old home I had a custom piece of double glazing made to replace the glass in some French windows and fitted it in that. Worked an absolute charm, and the brother-in-law has done the same thing. It only cost me about £100, fitted myself.

These cat flaps are great. Got ours maybe nine years ago. It did fail at one point - a little part of the locking mechanism sheared off after five or six years. They shipped me a replacement part immediately for free. Apart from that it's been perfect, and I can't fault the customer service.

Heat!

Can you fit through a cat flap then?
FYI I had to buy the larger ‘Pet Door’ as this is far too small for my cat. He’s not exactly a huge chonk, but he’s a fairly large cat. You can see the size of it in person at a Pets At Home store.

I have actually looked into this before, but I don't think I was searching for the correct thing as I couldn't find something to "fit". My cat flap is right next to a plug socket so it wouldn't be a hassle to do. Can you point me in the right direction?

i used this type of converter

rover.ebay.com/rov…328

then purchased some connectors which fit into it with bare wires to solder to the battery terminals (not the end where the terminal has a connection linked across both battery lines)

rover.ebay.com/rov…989
They wouldn't say anything, like another has mentioned, if they considered it to be such a risk then they would have that on the list of numerous questions they do have, and in the process risk losing a vast numbers of pet owners insuring with them due to the increased cost.
Let's put it this way, ive probably attended over 1000 burglarys in the last 10 years or so, and never have I seen someone unscrew a cat flap, reach in and get the keys.
I have seen burglarys via fishing for keys through letter boxes, so if you're that concerned, you can remove your insecure letter box.
