This deal has been posted before for students, but you needed an academic email address to purchase. Now Microsoft have opened up the offer to everyone.

Personally, I feel this tablet is better value than some of the atom tablets flying around for £299.

Pro:

i5 processor - more umph
Better graphics
4GB RAM vs. tablet average of 2GB
Full HD display
Active digitiser stylus

Against:

Poor battery life
Touch keyboard takes some getting used to
Heavier
Poor camera performance

Full Specs:

CPU: Dual Core 1.7GHz i5 -3317U
RAM: 4GB DDR3L-1600MHz
Storage: 64GB
Display: 10.6" 1080p 1980x1080 Multitouch + Pen
Graphics: Intel HD 4000
Camera: 1.2MP front and rear
Connectivity: 802.11 a/b/g/n MIMO WIFI, Bluetooth 4.0, USB 3.0, Mini Displayport (you can buy a HDMI attachment from Amazon for less than £5)

So for £399 including delivery, you get:

Surface Pro 64GB
Touch Cover (Worth £99)
Office 365 Home Premium 1 Year (Worth around £70)
£10 Microsoft Store Voucher

Quidco are also doing £50 cashback on Surface Pro 64GB tablets. A potential £349!

Right this is the way to setup Surface Pro correctly with Windows 8.1

When you receive it and startup for the first time;
0. Select custom installation during the setup wizard!
1. During setup wizard please untick automatically install latest drivers and change the windows update settings to do not update
1a. Make sure the time and date are correct (very important).
2. Download+Install+Restart this update which is needed for Windows 8.1 being available in the app store;
support.microsoft.com/kb/…389
Download the 64-Bit package
2a. Make sure the tablet is at least 45% charged before doing this as the next step will not work otherwise.
3. Login and head over to Control Panel > Windows Update > Check for Updates
Install only the System Firmware Update and restart
NOTE: If you don't do this you will receive error when updating to Windows 8.1
4. Login and head over to App Store and hit the huge tab to update to Windows 8.1
NOTE: Sometimes it may give error saying try again just keeping trying until it downloads the update
5. After Windows 8.1 installs and brings the setup wizard please select custom installation
6. During setup wizard this time please untick automatically install drivers and continue with initial setup.
"

Now when you login you will notice the correct drivers installed automatically including the intel graphics utility which will appear on the

Battery Optimising

First, create a new power profile. Battery settings are all you care about. Plugged in settings can be whatever you want, as we’re not concerned with energy consumption from the outlet. Here are the settings I used:

Name: Battery Max

Hard Disk: Turn off after 10 minutes on battery.

Internet Explorer?JavaScript timer: Max power savings

Desktop background settings: paused

Wireless Adapter Settings?Power Saving Mode: Maximum power savings.

Sleep
Sleep after: 3 Minutes
Allow Hybrid Sleep: Off
Hibernate after: 10 minutes
Allow wake timers: Off

USB?USB Selective Suspend setting: Enabled

Intel Graphics Settings?Intel graphics plan: Maximum battery life

Power buttons and lid?lid close action: Hibernate
Power buttons and lid?power button action: Hibernate (entails a brief 5 second resume penalty, but I think it’s worth the tradeoff)

PCI Express?Link state management: Maximum power savings.

Processor Power Management?Minimum State: 5%
Processor Power Management?Maximum State: 50%. This prevents the CPU from going into Turbo mode, which saves a LOT of juice. If you need more horsepower on battery, experiment with raising the max cap, but be aware that it’ll entail a battery life penalty.

System Cooling Policy: passive

Display?Dim Display After: 1 Minute
Display?Turn off displaye: 3 minutes
Display?Display Brightness: 30%
Display?Dimmed display brightness: 20%
Display: Enable adaptive brightness: on

Multimedia? When sharing media: allow the computer to sleep
Multimedia? When playing video: optimize power savings

Yeah

Just tried. can't remove the £50 bing voucher. stuck at 449.

Sry scrub that I just emptied my basket and started again and it's working. thought it was for last weekend only?

Good price if quidco will pay

quidco used to have £70.

anyone bought this last time care to comment on whether quidco has paid out?

gutted..bought the student deal... would have preferred the black cover over the cyan!

Its good but it weighs a ton

Touch cover isn't worth 99, currently priced 65 on Microsoft store.

Weight and battery life are a bit poor and the main things putting me off.

I wonder when MS will release the Nokia 'Pro' competing 'Surface Pro'

The 2520, looks amazing and the keyboard cover for it looks like it has been designed like something out of the Sony smashed into Apple comet

^ The 2520's cover and keyboard remind me of when Nokia made the artistic 8xxx series of phones

would love a surface, still cant justify it though ....

crocodilezzz

best grand I ever spent on a laptop/travel workhorse.

yes its heavy but its more like a laptop than a tablet.

its a laptoblet!!!

actually, I might copyright that word. lol

ah..... its already been copyrighted dammit! :-)

More like a tabletop ©.

Students get an additional 10% future purchases apparently too. Although, that there was no end date for the offer makes me suspicious

The touch keyboard isn't that great, the type 2 keyboard however is amazing.

Battery life isn't that bad if you set the power settings correct and set the brightness down to near min, I've managed near 7 hours on mine before auto switch off which is effing good for a core i5.

It is quite heavy compared to something like the asus t100, but its far better in every other way. Poor camera performance... who cares its a tablet! If you're one of 'those types' who take ipads and tablets to concerts or sporting events you deserve a good shoeing anyway. Its more than adequate for skype. Footy manager 2014 works really well on it (when plugged in)

what's the real-life battery life/time on these, will it comfortably do a few hours long-term?

On 75% brightness, I get minimum 6 hours of 1080p Video, 3 hours of football manager 14 with 3D on 3* level on my macbook air. I must admit, I'm tempted by the cheaper surfaces, but not the Pro 2. Sure it's a good device, but excluding the touchscreen, I'd much rather use my macbook air for day to day usage.

Occassionally browsing, mainly just reading, brightness one notch above min (not auto). Brightness is the biggest battery killer, CPU 2nd. No chance 7 hours for movies or games. Intensive 3d gaming will blow the battery in under an hour. In bed with min brightness I can just about watch LOTR fellowship before its warning me to save my work.

I messed about with the power settings, I use balanced, make sure max frequency allowed is still 100% as it dynamically changes frequency. For min I think its set to either 1% or 5%. Turn off live tiles, they take CPU power and keeps the wifi active, turn bluetooth off etc, don't have any usb devices connected

Also said no in live chat as well.

So something must have altered from the previous deal.

Is the office 365 licence tied to the account that you buy it from or do they send you out a box? I already have office so I'd sell that in if it was separate.

Very nice deal. Waiting for the day when they have 256 or 512 SDD tablets, as 64GB barely covers the install. Does this allow micro sd or usb3 mounting?

That day is here with the Surface Pro 2 but you need to dig deep into your pockets.

They must not be accepting returns or cancellations on Office 365. I got my Surface Pro couple days back and they said approved my cancellation for office but im waiting for refund of £59.99

Should I enable or disable auto screen brightness?
Will it help with battery life if I disable the feature?
