Ended up ordering the polar m430 or m340 I forget, last night after our conversation
Highly accurate GPS, altimeter trail watch. Excellent battery life, very durable and really good reviews.
Downsides are that it's came out late 2014 (although it has received software updates) and that amazon reviews and review articles mention issues with the HR strap failing.

That's the running watch I probably should have bought, it's the one they always mention in running watch roundups. Gets great reviews and the battery life should be good with the low-key screen.
I downloaded the Suunto app this morning, impressed with the trail maps, with terrain, satellite and heat map options, and being able to easily plot routes.
I manually plotted the run I did last week and the distance came out as 9.87 miles.
My honor Magic Watch 2 GPS tracked the run at 9.91 miles which is pretty impressive accuracy.

The Downsides of the Honor is that the Huawei health app doesn't show the trails on the map and has not satellite or terrain options.
The Suunto watch has the options to input your own trails on the app and then directions on the watch. You can also change GPS ping to 1, 2 or 60 seconds so accuracy and an extended battery life option.
The altimeter can also be calibrated, which all the hiking reviews seem to recommend at the start of every hike for better accuracy.

You see, this is why I mentioned it, I read some of that but didn't take it in, now you've explained it better, cheers
The Suunto website has all the details for updates and other such specs and info on the watch including video tutorials. Looks like you have to plug the watch into a computer/Laptop to update software.

Which is the best watch (dont tell me apple)? Garmin/samsung/huewie?
This is an excellent watch, that I have had many years, and would struggle to replace, especially with regard to battery life. As for the heart monitor belts, surely they must be considered as consumables (not to be eaten) since they are elasticated, constantly stretching and moving, and soaked in sweat. I tend to replace them after a year or so as a matter of course.
