Switch to Co-operative bank account get £100.00, plus £52.50 Topcashback, plus £25.00 to charity

UPDATE 08/06/15 - Topcashback reduced to £42.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Co-op bank's switching offer is pretty impressive this weekend: £100 to you, £25 for charity (you can choose one of seven), plus £52.50 Topcashback.

You must move at least two Direct Debits and pay in at least £800 within 31 days of the switch, and other terms and conditions apply so read the details carefully.

Unfortunately the accounts themselves don't offer many real benefits and there are better accounts out there, but if you have a local Co-op branch this may interest you. Also, it's handy to have a Co-op bank account if you may want a mortgage from them in future as they are pretty competitive there.

As I read it, you need to pay in a one-off £800 but there isn't a monthly pay in requirement.

I'm going to keep highlighting it till Cooperative fix it:

You can't log onto Cooperative Bank 'easily' using an iPad running iOS 8.3, using Safari. The drop-down numerical boxes just show asterisks, so you have to guess the position of the number, to select the passcode. It's a pain.

Its also doesn't give you much confidence on Cooperative dealing with any security issues, given the time they have known about this and done nothing. Everything is contracted out, from what I can gather, there is no connection between the bank, the software and therefore, the integrity of the bank.

Can't recommend them anymore. Its just not acceptable, especially given they have known since September 2014.

if you switch does it cancel/close your old account ? edit - let me answer my own question

On the day of the switch

Your old bank will honour any payments due that day; they'll then cancel all regular payments and close the account. If there's any remaining money in your old account, your old bank will transfer that to your new account too.

I wish I had the topcashback. I was a bit too early. Basically within 2 months, they pay £100 into your account. I don't think they will ask their £100 back if they don't put £800 the following month. Easy money.

Can anyone tell me how long it takes for new DD's to become active?

I cancelled all of the DD's under my spare current account a couple of months back, but I've never taken up the Coop £100 switch. If I setup a couple of charity DD's and then take up this offer this weekend will they be active in time for the switch?

Edit: Cooperative's switch service is a bit different to Halifax etc. You'll create your account first and the switch details aren't part of that initial form. So the TCB should track now, and I can wait until my DD's are active before going through with the account switch.

I have done this before, how long before you can do it again?

Looks like my next switch is sorted. I think the £800 only has to be in the account for a day too.

If you select the first digit then press next it will then populate the numbers
...that is the advice I was given until it's fixed. It's worked well for me so far.

You might not have missed much. I went through TCB, initially tracking then dropping to £0. Not hopeful of getting any cashback now, but got the £100. Terrible bank with a shoddy application process and questionable ethics (true for most of them you could say). Take your £100 and run I say!

I agree. I left them because their whole online banking product is awful. They should invest a few of those £100 incentives into improving the UI and functionality!

Why is that?

Tesco Savings allow you to do a direct debit to there. Also, setup a charity direct debit. From what I read though it costs them a little bit too to have it so don't be too bad else your consciousness will get you.

Have to say, I do agree with this point - this is having recently moved to First Direct from the Co-op after 5 years.

Easy money. Voted hot.

Set up a DD with Oxfam and GOSH for as little as a quid a month then you will feel like a cyber robin hood.

Phone them and saying you might want to leave and they would offer the £100. That happened to me, but I did not take up the offer as I had other fish to fry. When the fish was devoured, I applied online and I had my £100 last month. I don't think they will even monitor the £800. The £100 is already in your pocket... Just say that and you will be offered the £100. Keep me in your prayer or even remember me in your lottery draw tonight!

Better still, apply for a HHONORS (Hilton) OR IHG PRIORITY (Holiday inns) and bingo, you will have a free hotel night for each of them.

Oh great idea, thanks

On TCB it says you have to open a New Standard Current Account to qualify for £50.50 cashback. But reading further down in the merchants notes it says...

• You must have an active Co-operative Bank Current Account Plus in order for The Co-operative Bank to approve your TopCashback cashback

I signed up for the £100 incentive a year ago. They never got back in touch with me about where I wanted the £25 charity donation to go to, maybe they don't fulfill that part?
Might sign up again for the cashback as I will probably miss out on the joining incentive, as I still have a spare Clydesdale account from their £150 incentive to use.

If it's good enough for the Crystal Methodist, it's good enough for me. Voted hot.

It does state on Topcashback:

"As well as earning £52.50 cashback, The Co-operative Bank will give you £100 if you fully switch your current account and also £25 to one of seven charities!"

Topcashback is never guaranteed of course. I tend to find that small amounts track in minutes, but larger amounts usually require manual claims (I have claims in now for Direct Line and Hotels.com). Thomas Cook declined one of my valid claims meaning I didn't get £60+ cash back promised for a holiday.

I think that's the bigger part that's to worry about. I certainly don't have one of these, and doubt many HUKDers will.

I think that is the account you are applying for? I think it means the account must be active, and I guess that's what it means by paying in the £800 i.e. you can't close the account right away. I agree it could be clearer.

This thread is worth a read if you haven't seen it..

Thank you, will read up about this later.

As others have stated the terms aren't very clear, at the top where you click to get cashback it says to open a standard current account, and then later on in the terms you must have a current account plus.

Perhaps it means you need to have both or at least upgrade once you have opened the account, maybe its just a way for them to try catch some people out at not pay??

I have emailed tcb but the offer ends tomorrow so dought I will get a response in time, anyone who has already done this had any success in tracked cashback?

I dont know if to open a standard account like it states to get the cashback or a plus? :/!!

Have a spare current account to switch but no direct debits on it. Is there any two quick and easy DD's I can set up so I can switch for the incentive?

I switched last week but didnt go via top cash back..

cool, need to look into this more

I assume the correct account to apply for is the 'standard' account and not the 'plus', because when you apply, the application process takes you to the standard account application page...
Presumably the Ts & Cs are wrong (hopefully!)

You can setup a £1 P/M DD with a few charities (Shelter for one). Also there are a few 3 issues for £1 magazine offers around that you could take up - in which case I'd recommend calling to cancel the subscription after you receive the first or second issue.

League Against Cruel Sports is another one, you can take a Direct Debit with them with an annual donation e.g. £5 a year.

The switch has to be done at the time of opening the Co-op account.

Opening an account just to close it straight away will presumably show on your credit report, so I am not sure I'd do that.
