define "main bank account"

Original Poster

I would assume a Current Account which has your main income (Wages / Pension) and direct debits/standing orders going out of.

But doesn't state a minimum amount of income to be going in each month so could be open to anything but would assume when credit checked they would ask about your income and then whatever is the main income that would have to come into the new account

Thanks OP

So I could open this, pay in a grand and get £150? You don't need to keep funding it?

NOT available online, you have to go through stupid phone application, or turn up in branch. What a load of hassle considering it's 2014.

LoRdPlOps111 - think you might have to have your main income going through it until you get your £150, or probably reject it

Yorkshire are a small bank sent they? how can they offer more than likes of Halifax...

Might open one of these, only downside I can see is that it can't be opened online - so I'd imagine they will try to flog you other financial products, and find out when your house/car insurance expires. But £150 for 20 minutes hassle, that's not bad.

awful bank from personal experience
ex wife (own sole account) one moved home and they also changed my (sole account never associated whilst married) address too sending all my own statements to her!
they also blamed me despite me never knowing anything until ex wife rang me to explain why i was using her address!
and the bank refused to change it back until i filled in a change of address form out!
needless to say i closed it, which then caused a problem as i needed to show my 1st choice new bank my last statements with an address i'd never lived at, they couldn't believe it what i told them but couldn't offer me a new account because of it.

sooner keep it under the mattress and leave door unlocked

I believe the offer is also available at the Clydesdale for the Scottish. Good bank.

... Both owned by National Australia Group

Not to be sniffed at........Heat

Thanks for this, I could really do with the £150. I booked a phone call to set it up, took about 30 mins, so not too bad. I have a spare current account that I'll transfer, I checked again on the phone, to make sure there is is no requirement for amount of direct debits etc. I've switched banks many times for the incentive can't see why this isn't hotter!

Guys, this is a no brainer, jus t do it.
Best switch offer i have ever seen and so simple and no direct debits to switch. Okay the phone call thing is a bit of a bummer, but for 20 mins out of your life, it's a good reward,
Even if you're not too keen on the bank, do the switch, get your dosh, then switch again. There are loads of opportunities for switching rewards, £100 @ Co-op/ Smile, £100 @ Halifax, £100 gift card @ M&S, £70 cashback via Quidco @ Nationwide, £35 cashback via Quidco or TCB @ Santander. Just play them off against each other in rotation, simples.

Done it myself, pretty straightforward and also applies to existing customers and new customers. Just make sure you remember the steps to qualify for £150

This opening statement I don't like:

Eligibility
Use the current account switch service to move your account and close your old account.

So if you're like me, to protect your other current accounts which have may benefits (Halifax, Santander etc) you're going to have to open yet another current account first elsewhere, just to take advantage of this offer realistically?

Own by Australians - no thanks

Halifax switch was much more appealing than this bank.

So I could go through each of these providers and make a tidy profit?

+1 for awful bank.
internet interface is poor, telephone interface is worse, they take longer than other banks to credit money you've paid in
no wonder they're having to give you money to join.
It would take a lot more than that to get me to join them

Understandable really as it is a switching incentive after all.

Halifax offered me £200 to switch and that's hot got letter sent through the post

Do you know if the £1k can come from any account (excluding Yorkshire, etc as they say). i.e. can I just trx over £1k from one of my accounts with another bank once the switch is done?

I have a Tesco current I opened for the 5000 points which is a prime candidate for a swithc and close once the points are through!!

Best thing I ever did was get away from these.

My nearest branch is Gloucester 213 miles away from Helston. Its a Cracker

why dont you want wallaby steak as a reward.:p

A six pack of my favourite ozzie softdrink - Coca Koala - and I'd be tempted ;-)

The £1000 can be from anywhere once your account has switched - cash, cheque, wage if greater than 1k in a single payment or a trf in from elsewhwere

Good post.

I've been doing this for the past few months. My main bank account has never been switched.

Just open a basic current account with any bank and play them at their own game.

So far I've switched to First Direct (£125) and then left them (£100). Then on to Co-op for £100 with £25 donated to charity. Halifax for £100 and then on to M&S for a £125 gift card. Tesco offers 50,000 Clubcard points worth £200 when quadrupled.

Now I'm switching to Yorkshire bank.

So that's £575, a £125 M&S gift card, 50,000 Clubcard points, £100 via Quidco/TCB and £25 donated to charity all for about 6 hours work

Just remember to read the T&Cs as some need you to pay in a certain amount per month, require Direct Debits etc.

Be aware that credit checks are carried out. I've never asked for an overdraft when opening these accounts which is why I think my credit score hasn't had an impact.

A little education here, Yorkshire isn't a small bank but a very BIG bank. Yorkshire bank is the trading name for Clydesdale bank in Scotland both owned by national Australia bank (17th) biggest bank in the World. I used to work for Clydesdale bank in Glasgow within operations where there is no distinction between any of these two banks and their global trading names.

What on earth do you expect? They want genuine customers to switch to them, not just people wanting to take £150 off them because they can.

Yorkshire bank charge £30 for a bounced direct debit.

Halifax charge nothing.

That's how. Yorkshire bank charges are stupidly high. Overdrawn? Expect a £30 charge. Halifax charge £1.

Original Poster

From my tariff I was given for Yorkshire Bank it was just £15 to return a DD unpaid but if DD under £15 no charge. If you go more than £10 overdrawn then will be charged £6 every day you are overdrawn - Max charge per month capped at £100. They did offer another account Current Account Control which costs £7.50 a month but you would not incur any other bank charges.
