Found 13th Sep 2014
As my dedicated Navi has got smashed by Lufthansa baggage handlers and my next car will have Navi as factory fir - I am looking for a solution for European travel and also upcoming trips to South Africa and USA

found this with Worldwide maps lifetime updates for just over £30

if you buy in Euros on a card like Halifax Clarity then its £31.90

what do the collective masses here think - any better alternatives

Take a look at Osmand

The free ones are good enough for most people although the Google one doesn't allow you to download maps for some countries like Spain so you'll be hit with the data charges. I've also used the navigator app which uses open streetmaps. That one is also free. I can't speak highly enough of the free Nokia Drive application that my wife has on her lumia phones. Even the low end lumia 520 has this and I believe you now get all the countries included (it used to be just one of your choosing).

Nokia Here maps for android which is completely offline and free is coming soon.

Navfree is offline and free too. ;-)

yes I have tried NavFree but found it rather flakey and the maps are not always accurate because based on open source mapping

NavFree is great as a backup solution which i have used it for but as a navi that just needs to work with no hassle it has let me down

why i like the idea of Sygic is that the interface is a little more polished and the maps are TomTom based so dedicated sat nav maps

any other input / good alternatives with decent quality maps

would cold voters explain why cold?

Is it just that there are free alternatives? but IMHO they do not work as well

or are there better alternatives for lower cost with worldwide maps that I want ?

I've got both sygic and co-pilot and prefer sygic although it is not as aesthetically pleasing on the eye. Many of the free ones work just as well although I found navfree to be extremely poor.

Tried free ones- took me through routes that would add 10 min on a 20 min journey
Really unreliable and lousy routing in london

My choice has been copilot
But thats a nice price

You hope....

Go with the sygic mate. I have tried nearly all the free ones and they were all to unreliable for me I'm afraid. By that I mean they either crashed to often or didn't search properly as well as the odd incorrect map. The google option just wasn't an option for me as you really need net access and not everywhere has this (I know you can download some maps, but not enough for me I'm afraid).
Sygic is accurate, searches work really well and the maps haven't been wrong so far.

hot for me. good price. thank you OP.

Confirmed by Nokia so no need

Sygic is fantastic, uses TomTom maps and traffic and is considerably much more use than google or other on-line mapping systems. The fact that you can get almost the whole world for £36 is a bit of a bargain. HOT from me as this is a true fully developed sat nav that'll work on any device with gps.

Source? Great if so, but not what I remember hearing.....

Coming to Samsung devices first in October to coincide with the launch of their new smart watches. Coming to all compatible android and iOS devices by the end the year. A quick Google search would have been quicker than to question my comment.

the free ones are crap..Navfree never got me easily to my destination so I dumped it. I am using tomom satnav but I think this is an excellent price for Sygic

And that states that it'll be free, as you contend?

As you obviously have a hatred of using google, I've taken the pleasure of inserting yet another hyperlink for your benefit. Refer to paragraph three.
