Was really interested until I saw the cost of adding more ip cameras. £43 for 1 more camera license! €169 for 4 more cameras! Don't think so.

if you're looking at running 6 IP cameras then an entry level Synology isn't the best tool for the job anyway as the software is quite 'clunky' and not the fastest to view footage even with a Gigabit network connection. For 6 cameras you'd be better off with a dedicated NVR.

It is cheaper to buy the hard drive and the nas separately on eBay. They're so easy to fit as well - providing you can use a screwdriver!!

The price is very similar. Around £80 for the unit and another £80 for a 3tb sata drive. Most people would rather go for the complete unit rather than mess about.

You wouldn't run more than six cameras off this hardware.

You can run more than 6 no worries off this unit , keep an eye on eBay for cheap camera licenses as well. Great device .

Yeah, got a 1tb Swann 4 cam NVR for £180 ...thought this would be a good way to expand on it as I also want a NAS.

It's a great bit of kit the diskstation.

It depends on the resolution and frame rate that you choose for the ip camera too. I knocked mine down to 6fps but kept resolution high and agree, 6 probably possible but near limit. Knock resolution down though and it should handle more (4 licenses was expensive enough for me though!)

The new standalone surveillance client is much better than the old browser based one. I'm not sure that the price makes this a great deal though

Great little device, use mine all the time. The read and write speeds are better than advertised using WD red drives.

Recommend you go RAID 1 with dual redundancy, then you've got very few worries about losing data!

You'll need a 2-bay Synology box, like the DS215j.

RAID1 with one disk?

Surely some kind of witchcraft.

as people have said this is a 1 bay only device, you can plug an external USB hard drive in though and it'll automatically keep a back up on it.
