I didn't think this was a bad looking enclosure for those that maybe already have a drive they want to add. You can of course spend more and get something beefier that takes more HDDs and that are higher spec, bt for £85.99 on this model, It seems a fair price for more basic home use.

This does NOT come with any storage at all - You need to add your own drives to it.
It has 1x Gigabit Ethernet port and 2x USB Type-A ports on the rear

Does a dual bay version of this 2020 model exist?
I'm really looking for a decent nas but has to have more than one drive bay for redundancy, preferably 3 or 4 tbh.

I have recently bought the QNAP TS-351. Seems a good balance between specs and price

How much u pay and where from?
Heat, had a single bay Synology drive for about 6-7 years, no issues at all with it. I used to have a small USB HDD sticking out the back for backing up, but now just backup to the cloud. Simple.

I got it from the Ebuyer Ebay store for about £238, but it can ordered from Amazon for £243.47 with a bit of a wait...

Purpose of running this if you use cloud?

Small 1tb movie library I assume?

Presumably for quicker local storage/backup. I run a 2 bay Synology and its very versatile and very power efficient (as its left on 24/7)

The cloud doesnt have backup.
Hope some good deals come on 2 bay Synology. DS218+ has really good specs and features!

That’s like saying this drive doesn’t have backup. Backup is something you apply to a service. Backing up the cloud to the cloud is a perfectly serviceable solution.
Great deal. For most people a 1 disk set up, with a back up process in place (preferably to usb and cloud) would give you additional storage, data backup and all the cool synology features.

You only need more bays to extend storage or if you can’t deal with having any downtime due to your disk failing. But having a redundant disk drive (or drives) that mostly just sit there seems like overkill (in cost and complexity) for most consumers especially because you should still have usb and cloud backups going anyway.

Though in a 2-bay RAID 1 you do have a live backup of your data with this. I agree having a Cloud backup or external HDD backup makes sense too, especially because the NAS is a single device and there could be a power surge affecting the drives in both bays. There is some data I may not want on a Cloud though, and a local external HDD is good for backup but won't be a live backup (i.e. I could back up daily or weekly but still might lose something in the interim).

Basically nothing is 100% safe, but I feel that personally a 2-bay NAS is a useful thing.

Good reply.

I dont like multi disk redundancy in the way of RAID as indeed, its just extra cost and complexity for a home setup.
Given the things that can go wrong in a backup or with data i prefer different backup types as opposed to a mechanically robust single solution.

Yeah definitely for some people disk redundancy (RAID) is critical - I would say that most people though just want to backup their important files and media, which tend not to change on a day to day basis. As more of us do document creation in the cloud (google docs etc) or use cloud based storage (Dropbox, github etc) the need to back up “progress” during the day has been lessened.

Ive had a RAID controller go on me as well which left me with two disks with my data, but no way of accessing it without loads of hassle. Hopefully Synology ones are a lot better though!

I'd never put my photos in the cloud, I know what nosey humans are like.

They were asking why you would have this in addition to cloud. They compliment each other. Backup isn't something that is applied to a service, it is applied to data. and you should have redundancy. Cloud archiving is critical for this.

Don't see how you said that off my comment. You need to read the punctuation.

Update : sorry to say this seller is fraud and to my order replied saying cancel the original payment to Amazon and send money by bank transfer to his account in Spain!! Reported as fraud to Amazon and refund in process. Guess there is good reason hukd don't allow marketplace deals and that's why I posted the comments to spread the word.
