Synology DS215j NAS Desktop System 6TB (2-Bay, 2x 3TB WD Red) - £258 @ Amazon Germany

Found 19th Nov 2015
Why wait till black Friday to see if the price of NAS's come down.

(Price of £258 includes delivery, and assumes you pay on a fee free credit card).

This is one of the best out there for this money in my opinion.
The Synology DS215j is a great NAS, and this one includes 6Tb of Storage, with 2x 3TB WD Red NAS drives included.

Equivalent prices on Amazon.co.uk is £387.

On Amazon.de, when you add it to the basket, including delivery to the UK it comes to €369, which using today's exchange rate of 1.428, comes to around £258 (assuming you pay on a fee free credit card like Halifax Clarity or something similar),

I've ordered one, can't find anything coming close for the money.

Planing on installing Plex media server on it, and using for it for streaming all my videos and music.

You have to order and pay in EUR, otherwise if you pay in GBP, amazon works out the exchange rate. To get it in GBP for £258, you need to pay in EUR with a credit card that doesn't charge you any fees.

I paid £268 as I paid in GBP - still great deal.

Don't see why not, it's a storage solution, so any OS can connect to it

From the synology website.

Your files anywhere with cloud service;
DS215j brings you comprehensive cloud service. Cloud Station lets you sync files among DiskStations and multiple devices, including Windows PC, Mac, Linux, iOS, Android, as well as Windows mobile devices, whereas 2-way sync allows file synchronization among different DiskStations. You can even sync your DiskStation with Google Drive, OneDrive, Dropbox, Box, hubiC, and Baidu Cloud — establish your hybrid cloud to enjoy more storage flexibility and prevent data loss.

As an aside, cloud station isn't rated that highly by a lot of people on the Synology forums.

I've used Owncloud for a long time on my DS115, but i'm trying onedrive again to see if being on Windows 10 makes any difference to anything - which it isn't really!.
Got this happy with it other than as my own cloud storage but that is a problem with hh5 firewall apparently
How is the DS215J for running stuff like Sabnzbd, Sickrage, Couchpotato, Mysql, etc?

Is it fast enough, or do I need to go for the + model?
Ds217 series is our now
I appreciate this is not the place for a proper in depth explanation but can anyone offer a link or a quick summary for a complete noob on this stuff?
as I buy a DVD (rare now but 100's over the years) I copy it and back it up onto another disc and store the original. I actually have loads on DVD's still in VOB format on various hard drives. I have now decided I am out of space and really need to just start playing from the hard drive.
I know nothing much plays VOB files and to play VOB means playing from my PC.

does a NAS allow that?
do ordinary HD's allow that?
how would I stream my content to TV's around the house?
am I going to have to lose the VOB files and format to something else?

my original plan was to gather all my VOB files onto one HD, plug it into the USB on the TV and play like that but of course that doesn't work.

any advice/pointers much appreciated.

haven't tried it myself, but you may want to look at makemkv.com/
you can then keep the files on a NAS solution like this - mirror the drives in case one fails and you've got a decent media library, which you can play from your TV
I'm assuming you can take the hds out ands sell them separately? Or do they do just the enclosure for cheaper too?

Works well as a time machine. Or you can sync with symbology software. Media server / remote folders can also be used.
I use it for a Windows laptop and am android phone whilst my partner uses the same synology with her Ma Book and iPhone.

Some thoughts and info about this product.

I've had mine for 5 months now and too sum it up its good!

After ripping the DVD using a PC, yes you can store it onto your NAS. Using linux and the afp protocol to connect to the NAS I was able to view ripped DVD content using VLC media player, however I did need to install some codecs and libraries before it worked.

To view the content on your TV you are going to need a interface i.e. a pc or raspberry pi 2 that will connect to your TV and will interface with your NAS over network, which will allow you too view your content.

You can install third party applications for Synology but you have to add a third party repo called SynoCommunity, with it you can host your own LAMP server have mySQL database and can do many other things as well, the device contains 512MB of ram and has a dual core processors at 800mhz, not too sure on heavy database with gigabytes of data though but the possibilities are there.

Overall I am happy with this device the synology android apps are superb particularly the DSFile app on android which allows me to use my nas as my own dropbox. Synology also provide your own DNS via Quick Connect which allows you to access the NAS from outside the local area network.

Very easy to map network drives, also there is the option to use NFS protocol for unix machine which can be setup using the easy web interface. Speedy file transfer, getting around 100MB/s +- 20MB/s file transfer over gigabit.
Some bad points:

The cloud sync features is rubbish and confusing to use, would prefer to use rsync or cron job etc.
No second gigabit Ethernet port, may be useful for fail over or link aggregation.

It runs AFP as well as SMB and other access protocols (ssh, sftp, ftp etc) so yes, good for the Mac. Supports Time Machine, with a separate user and you can set quota limits to the TM user. It is connected to a UPS, such that if the mains goes off it shuts down files and services so it doesn't suffer if the power doesn't return.

Plex used to support DVD ISO and Vob files, but they dropped support some years ago. The reason is that these formats are interactive - DVDs contain menus as well as the video/audio streams and you can't stream a menu.

So the only real alternative is to convert the video and audio streams on the DVD to a more modern format (like MKV) and play these on a streaming player. Of course, you loose the DVD menus and you have to pick which bits of the DVD you want to convert to MKV- film, film + extras, film + alternate ending + bonus material, etc.

With Sonos, you just share the music on the Synology and point the Sonos at it. You don't need to run anything special on the Synology. Don't know about SmartRadio.

love the Synology range of NAS but be aware before purchasing that the DS215j wont be powerful enough to transcode HD video on Plex

Totally agree, I went through several brands of nas before a friend recommended the Qnap TS-453 Pro, lovely piece of kit.
Qnap is £381 more .
not if you look at diskless units, the two bay version of mine is only £150 more
Do you think that the : QNAP TS-231 2 Bay Desktop NAS would be a better buy ?
I think it really depends on what you want it for. I was originally planning on using a nas for storage and using my server to run a virtual machine for plex media server.

From spending a little extra I now have a nas that does the storage, runs plex itself and can handle some of my lighter virtual machines meaning my server doesn't have to be on all the time - bonus!
freestyle

Sorry My Mistake the + £381 was for 4 x 3tb drives and a 4 bay unit .

Sorry, you're right, my apologies.

It's if you select the diskless Synology DS215j unit for £129.99, in the listing information is an option for "Bundled Deals", and in here you can see the option to add 2 * WD Red 3TB drives for a total price of £290.
Good price if you're looking to buy from a UK seller.

I personally still prefer to save the 10%, and by from Amazon which I've done, even though it's coming from Germany, it will still have great support, and it's 3 year warranty from Synology.
