My Seagate Centel 2TB NAs died just over 2 week ago and have been looking around for a suitable replacement. Synology, although a little bit more expsensive, seem to be a better replacement what I had. I like the fact you can add your own Drives in and if the they fail, you can simply swap them (or pop them in RAID so you can restore a backup).

I kbow this isnt the cheapest it has been but it is the cheapest I can find for a decent Unit. I didnt want to more than £150 on one and the specs on this seems perfect.

Update: Just did a Flubit and got an Offer for £127.17 which isnt too bad

If I use this for plex file sharing would files I add to PC on the same network be seen on this nas or would I have to transfer them over, thanks

Im not a fan of Plex but I have used it. With my old NAS, I was able to add network storage to Plex and from there would scan the files from the NAS. I assume you will still need a device to act as a server in order for it play across other devices though you may need to google it.

I've got one of these but just have a 2TB red in, can't afford the other one yet Amazing bits of kit and the OS is amazing and can be as user friendly as you make it. The ios and android apps work spot on and remoting into your device is a breeze, no need to set up fiddly rules etc.

I dont use plex, but as I understand it this wouldnt work well as it isn't powerful enough to transcode. This is the j model , the lowest powered of the range.

Would be good either straight playing to the TV via DLNA or shared drive, or kodi on a pi/fire stick or similar.

was this price last BF (2015)

sorry doesn't seem a deal to me going off Camelx3
standard price £129-£140

Do not get a Synology if you need to transcode HQ files with Plex. You will need another HTPC to do the grunt work.
If all your files are encoded in lower quality or mp4 then you should be ok.
I find Kodi a better solution and less fussy but your experience may vary.

Synology has VideoStation which will player HQ files though

Does it matter how powerful a NAS is if using something like a Nvidia Shield to stream the videos? Or is it just simpler to connect an external HDD to the Shield at that point?

I bought this NAS as my last one died but before I got this one I was putting an external drive into the shield and I tell you what, it was a complete nightmare. I know for some dont mind but considering I was putting stuff on there daily, it became a pain as I always had to disconnect and reconnect. Thats why I like the joy of the NAS. Set it up correctly with Kodi and the job's a good un
