i've got the Plex app on the DS115 so i would assume it would be on this as well. i never use it though - prefer kodi

yep, no problems, as long as you stay away from subtitles. Transcoding in Plex is crap if you need to do it on the server side.
lol
You can but on mine its a bit flaky and falls over every other time i use it. I gave up
The Shield TV has both Plex client and server built into the latest firmware. You can connect an external HD to it and use it like a NAS ands stream media from it...

The CPU in the DS216j doesn't have enough grunt to transcode. You'll have issues unless your clients are capable of direct playing your media and have sufficient network bandwidth to handle higher bit rate streams.
This is still an excellent price for this but of kit.
I only had this model for a short time because i needed a 4 bay version but would still highly recommend this.
Agreed. For transcoding on the fly, you'd be looking at the DS216:Play (at a minimum).
It's that time of year though when Synology are about to announce new kit. I imagine 117/217 are on their way.

I use the Hp for sickbeard, sabnzbd and plex server - if this helps
You can run a modified version of the synology firmware on your HP ProLiant, I am doing it now.
The unit is well impressive and has endless features. Quite complex it you want to customise the setup though, but that is the reality of these all singing all dancing NAS systema.
The AMD CPU in your Microserver is quite a bit more powerful than the ARM chip in the DS216j, but it's still not up to transcoding 1080p video. I ran Xpenology with SABNZBD+, SickRage, CouchPotato and Plex on an N36L for a year, on paper the N54L CPU is around 70% faster, but not fast enough to make any difference.
I now run Xpenology on a Dell T20 with a Xeon CPU (virtualized on ESXi 6.0), the T20 is more than capable of transcoding four 1080p streams at once. You can pick up a T20 for a little over £200 if you get the right deal and rebate.
Would it be easier to use the Synology OS? What software did you need to run on your mobile phones/tablets to view the 1080p content?
The Synology OS is called DSM. The Xpenology software is a bootloader that allows you to run DSM on non-Synology hardware (including virtualized on VMware ESXi, Hyper-V, etc.).
I run an Xpenology/DSM virtual machine on my server. This VM runs the standard Synology Plex server package which streams/transcodes and syncs to various devices running the Plex clients: Nexus 6P phone, two Nvidia Shield TVs, Roku3, Plex Native and Web Clients on Windows PCs and a Chromebook.
ok thanks for the info - food for thought
Do you run dsm on the vm so you can backup to That location?
Of i understand this Means you dont need a synology as a destination device to run a backup over rsync.
Good info. I can see myself looking into this.
Wasn't transcoding that was the problem. The server would just disappear randomly, effectively crashing and needing to reboot the nas to get plex to restart. It would work fine for a couple of days maybe then disappear again. Wasn't uncommon looking at the plex forum. In fairness there was good dialogue and regular updates too try and fix it. I just can't be bothered with trying to keep up when the standard media streamer works fine with my Samsung telly, just doesn't look as pretty
The VM is my main file storage; I don't back up to it, I back it up to a couple of 4TB USB drives. However, it is a fully functioning copy of DSM and it can act as an rsync target.
