I have this and would challenge the 4K transcoding. It regularly dies and complains "the server is not powerful enough to convert" in Plex.

I'd spend the extra £20 and get the new DS218 Play which is far more powerful and much better bang for your buck

I was just going to ask if the 218Play was worth the extra money. I'm a bit thick on NAS usage, but if I've got 1080pMKV files dotted around the home, and I centralise them on a NAS would you suggest having a RAID setup, and if so what kind. I've always taken the attitude that a drive failure would be an annoyance rather than a crisis when it comes to FLAC or MKV files.

Also is the 218play compatible with Plex? Amazon questions/answers state that it's not but QandA there is not always gospel

In reality avoiding transcoding altogether is the best bet , though if you regularly play 4k on a mobile phone then it may be needed. I use straight NFS shares with kodi on a fire tv box.

RAID setup, yes always unless you can restore from another source. The SHR/SHR2 can be better than straight raid, its more flexible with disk sizes.

I might need my hand held on this. So if I've got a 15GB MKV file that I play via Kodi on my TV and I want to be able to watch that file on a mac/win laptop whilst out of the country (using hotel wifi or portable wifi) do I need to transcode? I'm never gonna want to watch it on IOS or Android

Don't get the 218 Play if you want Plex straight away because it is not supported yet, no ETA by Plex either on when support will arrive.

MKV isn't a supported format. I have stuff in MKV which is tiny (900mb) and it always throws a nonce about them. Have to re-encode to MP4 or something else

True about Plex - support is coming for the new CPU architecture.
The Synology Media Server app is fine as a temporary measure

Non starter for me then. I have approx 200 MKV files ranging from 8gb - 25gb in size. Is there any NAS out there for me?

I had the 218play and returned it and paid the extra for the 218+ with Plex support and hardware encoding for Plex Pass users.

Had no issues with any 4K (and HDR) content served up by Plex but most Direct Play’s on my LG OLED.

I use Video Station and am quite happy with it, so am not worried about Plex but there is no ETA so it might appear tomorrow or 3, or 6 months time. Like I said, if you want Plex right now, don't get the 218 Play.

Announcements will be made here:

Nope. Any MKV in Plex played on any device (Mac, TV or PS4) has a wobbly. I've got an automator script which polls the NAS and converts any recently added MKV to MP4 then performs a reindex. This does the trick

Considering MKV is simply a container for other formats, that sounds quite disappointing. How does Video Station get on with MKV files or have you not tried VS?

I tried it once with only 1 file (about 3gb). It failed so never went back to try anything else or smaller.
I really want to get a 4 bay Synology, but with Spectre and Meltdown patches to come, who knows what performance hit they will take - Might need a temporary solution, and wait for new processors to get a proper one. Anyone else thought about the performance hit on them?

Exactly, was just going to post the same...thinking of returning the 218play

Did you create that script, if so is it relatively easy.

Really? They are getting patched? When does your home NAS device run untrusted code?

Well I was thinking bout the DS918+ with 16GB RAM, as I wanted it run some VM's and take the load off my server. The problem is unpatched it means the VM's have access to the hypervisor and all machines on it. Not sure what Synology's official line is on it - With Intel only rolling out patches now (again), it may be a while before Synology know how big a hit it'll take.
All of my files are MKV DTS. Am I wasting my time looking at a NAS/Plex. If so can someone please suggest an alternative.

Nearly went for the 216j at christmas so glad i didn't. DS118 and Video Station work perfect for all mkv, mp4 and avi vids i've used so far.

It’s a bit of a ballache.
You need the the command line version of Handbrake as a prerequisite.
Looking at qnap ts-231p2 which is in similar price band as 218play...is this better than synology...any advice please

I attached a raspberry pi 2 (Kodi 17.6) to a DS 214+ and
never had any issues with format or speed but will soon replace the raspberry with something more powerful.
