Would spend the extra and get a + model. I would not class this as a bargain.

Is this better than the 218play? Seem similar or am I missing something?
I have the single bay version of this and am very happy with it. Because it has an ARM processor some of the Synology packages won’t run on it. There is a working Beta version of Plex but no Docker

I've got the DS116 Single Bay and Plex isn't Beta for me - it's the full version available in the package center.

The x18 series has the ARMv8 processor which is what causes the compatibility problems. Plex Beta available here
I don't use Plex anyway, it's Emby for me.

I have this, it's an excellent nas, stream all my films from it to my TV in 4k. Brilliant!!

Ah, missed that. Thanks
Amazing what people will pay just for an enclosure. A two disk NAS isn't big enough for films (for instance) in my opinion. When the sweet point for disks is 4-6 Terabytes that's only going to give you that amount for storage (assuming it's going to be raided or backed up to the other disk.
It certainly wouldn't for me I've got about 12 Terabytes and I'm only storing in HD!

Synology Nas offers quite a lot more than an enclosure, the cost includes a really good interface. A 4 bay or larger makes more sense but then synology also has add on enclosure.

I agree with this. I bought a two bay Synology 12 months ago and whilst im really happy with it, I was suprised how quickly I filled up the storage with photos and movies. Now considering doubling the storage and its going to cost me a packet!

Depending on your model, there is a 2 bay expansion available. Cheaper than a whole new NAS.

I'm personally saving up for the DS218+, looks a bit more future proofed... intel processor so better compatibility, more apps can be run in docker, memory upgradeable to 10GB, should handle 4k video. I'm hoping to get one in a couple of months... any sales coming up?

918+ may be better for avoiding the inevitable need for more storage in the future. Been there.

You could however also look at the QNAP Nas which allow you to add on standard external hard drives.

Likewise, I only really want it as a media server but know it will soon get filled with the 1000's of photos that seem to get taken daily.

Would you say that qnap is better than synology or are they more or less the same? What would be the equivalent qnap to the ds218+, I'm not bothered about future expansion.
Cannot say which is better as I have only just got a qnap but interface looks similar but I believe expandability is better though not an issue for you. equivalent Qnap probably QNAP TS-251+.
Would recommend the + model. Got my DS718+ for £363 back in Jan. Also have the option of adding an expansion unit in the future

Thanks, you ordered from them before?
I haven't actually, though I am tempted. Id have to look into reviews from UK buyers first.
