it really depends on what you want it for. I’ve had an ancient synology 2 disk 212j for years running as a 2tb media server and photo backup. No RAID as I back up to usb & the cloud so if a disk fails I’ll restore from backup.

Streams HD video to my Fire stick and iPad absolutely fine.
I have older model DS215j looks like this, plenty useful for CCTV recording, bit torrent downloads, backup. Don't need a backup for my backup, I am not a financial institution, so running both disks in non raid.

New hardware gets announced today...
Good price, 512mb low though, even my qnap has 1gb. Depends what you want it for, maybe the ram is upgradeable in this, sadly not on my qnap.

This will be perfectly adequate for many.

I want to easily back up my data & have a failsafe mirrored copy. Also have access to music & photo library. Is this box suitable?

Get the biggest capacity drives you can afford. I've had the ds218j for two years with 2 x 8tb drives and it's at full capacity already. I'm having to upgrade to a 4 bay and buy 2 more drives.
I found this YouTube video useful for comparing the different Synology 218 NAS devices
Voted hot, thanks OP.
Gone? Can't see it at this price any longer.
Price went up now to £160. It was £158 for long time before.
Hopefully orders will be fulfilled. According to 3Camels it was the lowest Amazon price

Depends what you mean by 'failsafe'. Mirroring means that all writes happen simultaneously to both drives, so if you accidentally overwrite or delete something, the the original is gone from both drives. N.B. A mirrored copy is not a backup. You can enable the recycle bin on Synology which works in a similar way to the one on Windows. This will help with the accidental deletes, but not the overwrites.

So RAID is useful predominantly for uptime-basically if one disk fails you still have availability and you can add in a new disk without having to restore. The downsides of RAID are that if the RAID controller fails you will need to buy a new NAS to get your data back, and it needs you to purchase a lot more storage vs the amount you can actually use.

Having RAID doesn’t protect you against a fire or flood destroying your NAS so you still need other forms of backup for any important stuff.

I don’t need that level of availability so I set up the NAS in a non RAID mode to increase storage, with backup to cloud.
Does anyone know whether this be used a Plex Media Server?

Its a pain and probably not very environmentally friendly having to have my PC running when I want to use Plex services...I guess if anyone out there picks this question up and has a bit of knowledge on this NAS and its media capabilities can I also ask what the support for Sonos and iTunes is like?

Have read mixed and confusing comments - Are there 'Server App's' that you can install on the Synology NAS available for Sonos & iTunes so I don't need to manage it on my PC anymore?

Appreciate any advice from you more tech savvy HUKD'ers
Ok, so if my drives are mirrored and one should fail I would not lose anydata. Is that correct?

Would I be able to use an external hard drive to backup up the mast data without it being encrypted?
I had an older version of this for about 4 years and for the last 2 it's consistly been recording from my security cameras using the free surveillance station application. It's proba ly good enough for what allot of people want, but obviously it all depends.

And it’s not like losing your downloads is really the end of the world. Any ‘rare’ things are backed up on discs for me but yeah, we run a 215j aswell and have found no need to upgrade. Got 4tb of data and between physical discs, Spotify and Netflix we never run out

Yes and yes. You would lose your data if there was a catastrophic error to both drives, obviously... eg physical damage or huge power surge, but loss of data would be the least of your worries in those circumstances.

Hard drive can be plugged in via USB and backed up to aswell

Yes - iTunes and Plex are both available as apps on synology - both work fantastically. Re: Sonos - just direct your Sonos account - preferably on PC - to see your NAS and it’ll work beautifully also

Cool, I appreciate you taking the time to reply, thank you. Although missed out at this price have set up a price watch, someone mentioned some new Synology kit in the pipeline in which case these should come down in the near future (fingers crossed). Similar to Sonos, Synology seems to maintain comparatively premium prices rarely attracting decent discounts until a product gets updated.
Thanks again
Sorry. Voted cold by mistake and now cant undo it. Not that it will effect the 300 plus votes

How does this work? Are they wifi cctv cameras? Do they have to be wired to NAS?
