Not a huge fan of these but they can be handy and this is a great price. lowest its ever been. You'll need to choose to buy from Amazon on back-order.

Incredible price - thanks

Why are you not a fan out of interest? I run synology (on an HP n54l as a VM) and really like it. Have considered getting a real one so upgrades etc are a bit easier

The Synology boxes are very overpriced for their hardware specs, better off buying something like an HP Gen 8 or Gen 9 and swapping out the processor for something with a bit more power and putting in more memory.

Having said that, at this price its a good deal if thats what you want

They are good, hence why I posted but for a geek like me I find the micro-servers more versatile. These are easier to setup and have lower power usage.

All depends on the scenario really. Either way its a good price and will be useful to many of you.

4TB WD Purple drives are also at their lowest price , I've just posted the deal ... should be live in a minute

edit : here it is...

Think this had dropped in price across the board as ebuyer appears same price (or Amazon price matched?)

ebuyer.com/657…omp

I've had 2 Synology NAS drives so far, having gone from a 2 bay one to a 5 bay one ... I have to say that they are the easiest, fastest way to act as a backup file server with raid in my opinion.

This is a great price for this drive as well.

I try to avoid ebuyer... they have improved but their customer service is miles behind Amazon

I bought the DS214+ two years ago, best investment I have done for a long time. Those machines just work without any hassle and the software is incredibly easy to use.

Heat from my end :-)

Can it run plex and do 4K transcoding? Thanks.

Yes to Plex but 4K might be a reach

I did mention the out of stock in the description.. hence back-order price.

Had me excited then, been waiting for 416play to drop, the wait continues, good price though

Synology units are FAB! - They are expensive but well worth it.

The apps are great and the hardware is reliable.

This one's well priced but a bit overkill for my needs, hoping there's going to be a good deal on the 216j or similar before Christmas.

Good price. I do like the 215j I have but seems to turn itself on a lot. It's suppose to turn on LAN activity but always see it on so tend to just stick it off until I need it! Might be doing something wrong there.

Did you check the power schedule ?
World also suggest to apply the latest updates, never seen such issue on my device.

Will follow this thread closely I was thinking of the DS216+ but thought for long term purpose, I should look for a 4 bay NAS....

The Synology page says it does 1080p transcoding, but doesn't mention 4k. synology.com/en-…dia

However if you're just streaming 4k, then the read speeds over your network is your only concern.

Purple drivers are really not made for NAS. Geek should know it's not an usual data storage hard drive like gen or red.

Ahem... actually a geek like me knows that WD purple drive are fine in this scenario, they are consumer grade drives with TLER enabled by default in the firmware so perfect for a consumer grade raid NAS like this.

If you believe that WD red's are somehow extra special you should check them at a firmware and component level, you wont find any significant difference.

Isn't this an older model? The last I looked they had just released the DS218/DS418play - these can, in theory, trasncode 4K.

They all 'could' transcode 4k.. but will it be real-time? (or ideally ahead of real-time) all dpends on codecs, bitrate etc

Even basic systems will run Plex but with restrictions, more powerful systems will allow for multiple streams and higher bitrate transcoding but will be more expensive to buy and to run and usually nosier.

The Nvidia shield makes for a good home use Plex server, small, quiet , energy efficient just use an external drive for your files.

This synology nas is a small Linux server, has a great web based user interface, has package manager for installing plex server and lots of other servers, they really are very good but may be overkill if you just want to stream a few movies around the home.

I think you are more paying for the combined software and hardware experience. Of course you can run Synology software on other machines but I'm not sure that is legal and/or ethical.

Synology NAS can run Plex but they are not usually powerful enough to do any meaningful transcoding through Plex as Plex does not support hardware acceleration I believe (they have started with the nVidia Shield thing now I think). Any transcoding mentioned in a Synology spec sheet will be using their own software, not Plex, as far as I am aware.

Again I don't think they will transcode 1080p/4K via Plex but I may be wrong on that. The Synology software uses hardware which Plex doesn't.

I believe Plex specifically supports hardware transcoding on the Shield, hence why it can manage it. I don't think any dedicated support has come to Synology devices yet, at least not when I last checked. Could always use a Synology to store the files and a Shield as a Plex server Personally I use an Alienware Steam Machine as a Plex server.

Yes, thinking on it you could be right, I'm sure I saw something about having to use Synology's DS Video app (it's available for various devices and TVs) in order to utilise the hardware transcoding capabilities of the NAS, as Plex can't access it.

I'm very frustrated that there's no DS Video App for LG TVs (WebOS 3.5)... Having to open in the phone and then send to the TV doesn't work very well... And Plex simply doesn't run well on a DS216j...

I use the following combination:
DS 214 + (2x WD Red 4TB)
Raspberry Pi 2 (Kodi)
4K TV Hisense

Works like charm and still enough space to mount my home folder for my Linux machines so that have everything at a central location.

You don't need a DS Video App for LG, you can browse all your videos or photos using the Photo and Video app from LG that comes installed by default. You only need to enable the Media Server in your synology and all your media items will appear in your LG.

This only works if I reboot the NAS, after some time it will always disappear...

Is this worth buying or should I invest more for a 4k version. I am new to NAS drives and still trying to understand all the different options.

Thanks in advance

To solve that reduce the "SSDP advertisement interval (seconds)" to less than 20 otherwise, the TV forgets that the synology exists until it receives the advertisement again. The setting is in the Media Server app

Can I run a microserver or this on my home network (BT Fibre), just to stream movies from my home network to mobile phablet at work remotely (using phone's 4g connection)? Or any cheaper, power efficient solutions for my scenario?
Edited by: "no_Sunshine" 13th Nov

Synology devices aren't great for transcoding with Plex

Might be worth getting a i3 NUC (or SHIELD) to do all the grunt work and have Synology as your storage

Big fan of Synology boxes (but one day I'll give the Microservers a try)

My always on N40L micro server is dead Looking forward for some good BF deals on SYnology box.... Can't decide whether the 216Play or the 216+II....
