Does this one allow hardware encoding?
I was very disappointed when I found out my DS1817+ couldnt manage it.
It cant really play x265 videos. x264 seem fine though. Havent bothered trying multiple streams.
Yes but if you're using Plex I believe you have to use the Docker version rather than the native synology app mariushosting.com/how…as/

You would be miles better off just getting a old workstation off ebay, filling it with hard drives and installing unraid for the money.
I was running an HP microserver gen 8, i3, 4gb ram and have now moved to a Synology 920+. Server was idling at 40-50W, whereas the NAS is 25-30W. Is a fairly big % difference but admittedly at these low power draws it takes a long time for the cost saving to mean a lot.

Main differentiator for Synology is the software, having their photo app for example and easy available mobile apps etc (edited)

Synology has done a good job on marketing, almost every IT related youtube influencer got one of their products for reviewing.

for family use (less than 5 users) without much knowledge of computing I would say Synology did a good interface design for their aimed users, however personal consumer market is too limited,
now they try to claim their product for business, very curious what type of business would use them, even they claimed as 'small business', maybe sole trade will be more precise.
They are actually fine for small businees who just need to do file sharing. Those small company might not even have full time IT, and normally are not concerned about redundancies or complicated permission control.

DS stations may well see refreshes this year so the 2020 version may drop automatically

I bought the DS1511+ in 2011, haven’t regretted it, still running. Not sure I need to upgrade yet

These have just been going up and up in price over the last 18months. Good price for current times! Voted hot.
No they haven't, they launched in July 2020 for £550.

Personally I wouldn't buy a 4 bay NAS for any serious data where I will have to choose between 3+1 or 2+2. Pretty good for casual use though.
For me the NAS shouldn't be the only backup. If your house burns down or the NAS get smashed to pieces the 3+1 and the 2+2 will be useless anyway.

This code can't be applied to your order.

    anyone knows why?

For those that picked this up: What drives did you go with and what config 1-20TB?

Seagate IronWolf? WD Red (Plus/Non-Plus)? WD Red Pros etc?

I've used 2x4TB WD Reds previously in my 2-bay, then upgraded to 2x IronWolfs 8TB. I can't decide what to throw in this 4 bay. I've been happy with both WD and Seagate lol.
