Tacx Flux Smart Turbo Trainer £450 (potential £405) @ Halfords

If you are looking for a serious direct drive smart turbo trainer but can't justify spending £1000 on a Tacx Neo or Wahoo Kickr this is one of the "best of the rest". Halfords currently price matched to £450 but should also be able to use British Cycling or Cycling UK 10% discount making this £405. Worth trying 3% Quidco too.

The Tacx Flux Smart Trainer is a compact and realistic interactive direct drive and is maintenance-free. The swift response of the Smart electronics and the 7kg flywheel transmits the slightest fluctuations in resistance directly and accurately to your legs.
Of all the Tacx trainers, the FLUX has the heaviest actual flywheel with an effect of 23kg. The greater the flywheel effect, the more realistic the cycling experience. It uses ANT+ and Bluetooth Smart for communication and can therefore be connected wirelessly to smartphones and tablets. The ANT+ FE-C protocol enables you to train with Tacx apps as well as third-party apps such as Zwift and TrainerRoad. You can also train stand-alone; if you do not connect the FLUX, it will simulate a flat road.

Tacx Flux Smart Trainer Extra Info

Interactive Smart direct drive with electro brake

Can be used with tablet/smartphone with Tacx apps

Automatic Operation

Maximum brake power: 1500 Watts

Realistic slope of 10%

The freehub body included fits all SRAM and Shimano cassettes. Campagnolo cassettes require additional body

I would guess people voting this cold are either against Tacx turbos or have little idea what it can do. (Or are busy giving heat to the tin of spam deal😳😬)

Personally I love my wahoo kickr but this Tacx Flux is still retailing at £600 in many places so this is a good price. Some extra discount to be had with British Cycling and the like. Heat from me.

Insanely hot..
Was going to buy this several months ago but read some bad reviews on the flux having mechanical issues and not running correctly. I am a tacx fan but would save the extra and pick up a proven wahoo trainer
According to DC rainmaker all the potential mechanical problems are fixed in units produced since June as the latest flux units now share the same internals as the new "flux s" but the flux s adds support for long derialers.

God knows how long halfords have been holding this stock though.

Still think it's worth the risk for £405 though - hot deal (think same price at cycle republic too?)
I picked one up on Saturday with 10% off using Perkbox. Had been looking at it for a few weeks as it is the best price for this. Apparently Tacx warranty support is great if it fails and there's a 2 year warranty so thought I'd risk it despite reading lots of reports of failures. Got it all set on Zwift yesterday and really pleased with it.

What mech are you using on it? Does it come with a mech?

You have to purchase another cassette to match the one on your bike to use with it.

@matt.pedley I have no idea why this is cold. I bought this myself last week after someone at my club suggested it was excellent value for the price.

I'm using a cassette which goes to 28t and I think it's a mid size rear derailleur. You need to purchase a cassette separately or take it off your wheel. 28t is the max you'd get away with as the clearance on mine is as close as it can go.

Thanks I think I have a 105 11/32 sat in the garage but obviously it may not fit
Finally picked this up today after waiting for a replacement Cycling UK membership card. Very happy at £405. No idea why this got voted cold, even the cyclist haters should be happy it keeps us off the roads!

I think it had a bad reputation due to previous problems with it, which are apparently now solved on June 2018+ models. Could you tell me if the box/unit has a build date? I'm looking at getting one but only if it's the newer "fixed" type.

Good to see they applied the discount, I just got British Cycling membership to get 10% off this (although the offer could end at any time so I need to press the button ASAP really...)

It is the old model with the EDCO freewheel body.

Do you mean not the Flux S? Apparently the internals of the "non S" vary:
dcrainmaker.com/201…tml

"there’s actually a substantial difference internally between an original ‘2016 Flux 1’, and a new 2018 Flux 1. Even after that clarification it can remain confusing, as a 2018 Flux 1 manufactured in January will vary in comparison to one made in June 2018. I say June, because that’s when most of the changes were incorporated into the product line"

I've checked mine and it isn't the S, it has the original style legs where the S are lower, and has the Edco not Shimano Freehub.

It is 2018 though, there is a barcode on the box marked "W 2018" and "T290020180500".
Topped up the heat. Great price, but clearly clearing stock in fear of the silent Kickr Core coming in to ready availability in the next few months.
Fwiw the current rrp is 550 drspite the misleading was price by Halfords

Thanks OP, managed to get one yesterday with British Cycling discount too
This trainer is now £399 as one of the Black Friday Deals.
Further to my purchase on the 17th October, after doing 300km-ish on it, the trainer has developed a belt squeak and, at higher power, a clicking noise on overrun/freewheel, so the 2018 labeled ones aren't any better!

It's good fun aside though! I'll try and take it back one evening next week. I'll be annoyed if I'm kept from one for more than a few days. I'm not sure whether to upgrade to the Neo (which a lot of Flux owners have done and are very pleased) or switch to another model.

Good to know Gareth79, let us know how you get on with taking it back as I might be doing the same. The neo is a tempting upgrade at its current price, Halfords no longer sell it however.

There was literally no questions on returning it - just put back on the card, they didn't even ask for any detail on the fault. Bizarre but not a problem for me of course! I ordered Neo from Tredz this morning - £754.99 after the Black Friday discount + 3% Quidco on top.

Awesome, great price on the Neo too. Will give Halfords a go later on and get an order in at Tredz
