Like yourself not going to jump fully in but want to try this out in the larger bedrooms. How does the tado stat fire the boiler if the central stat is off?

At it's most basic, 'dumb' systems have a boiler, rads with manual valves and in my case a stored hot water tank, a controller/timer in the kitchen with separate settings for hot water and central heating, and a thermostat on the wall in the living room.
For me, I replaced the 'stat in the living room with the tado 'stat from my kit. Then central heating is then set to permanently ON and the temp and schedules etc are controlled within the app and/or by manually overriding the temp on the 'stat. You don't need the tado radiator valves for it to work, just the tado 'stat and app will sort out the heating.

However, my understanding is that if all the radiators are equipped with a smart valve then each can demand to be heated rather than the whole house. For instance, a dumb 3-bed semi has 3 bedrooms, a bathroom, kitchen/diner, living room and a hallway. A ''dumb' setup heats all the radiators at the same time and just pumps hot water around the house when the heating is on. If you manually close a dumb valve, that rad doesn't get hot water thru' the rad and stays cold as the hot water moves to the next rad in turn. If you open it a bit then some hot water goes thru' and the rad gets a bit warmer etc etc. Smart valves just turn themselves up/down or on/off based on the settings given to each valve or the zones they are in. That way, you can have 2 simple zones, upstairs and downstairs. Most of us live in the one living room most of the time and feel pretty snug in it. When we feel cold we heat the room we are in and don't really care about the rest of the house as the dumb rad valves are just set to whatever they are. Smart valves can split the house and say 'OK everyone's downstairs so I don't currently need to make the bedrooms hot, at least not until 1 hour before bedtime'. The heating is activated and the downstairs rads open to let the hot water thru' whilst the upstairs rads stay closed, or just a little open, to maintain a little heat. Over time, you develop a schedule where the heating is only one or off / hot or cold where you need it.
Hope this makes sense and is not a complete waste of my typing and your reading !!!

Seems a great price. Just cant bring myself to buy the Tado system though with the new monthly subscription. All I see is negative reviews on the v3+. I even tweeted tado asking about the v3 to v3+ differences. No reply :/ . Hot deal this though!!!
Stonking deal. Finally I can order the one I need to finish my system. Usually only the multipacks are on offer. Thanks op

Great price. 2% TCB as well
Good price. Never seen cheaper even if you buy 4
I have paid the subscription as it was more convenient that it turned heating on as I was driving home and taking chill out of the house.

You can do everything without it as it’s sends messages to you about turning it off. I’m just lazy.

Also good find! Tempted at this price..... now to check with boss if I can take it one step further
Thanks for flagging this. I was tempted by Amazon's quattro offer but didn't really need 4 more. This is just the job, and cheaper than Amazon too.

Oddly, it seems you can only order 2 at a time. I was thinking about buying two plus one spare (at this price, why not?) but will stick to two.

I think you can order more than two, but you need to put in multiple orders.

Geofencing, window open. Don't know why.

I have a message that says it's courtesy of Apple but I don't have an apple account.
Only letting me add 2 to the basket. Spent too long debating about needing more.

At what distance home does it turn the heating on? unless its 20 to 30 minutes away then surely it pointless as no boiler is going to heat a house that quick.

More support on here than through Tado! Sadly, to me I see the geofencing as necessary. One of us is a shift worker working different night and day shifts every week. I want the geofencing to set the heating. I've got a 25 year old thermostat that works to my 7 day predictable 9-5 schedule but not the other halfs. Sadly, drayton, nest, hive (and previously Tado) all seem to do this for free. Annoying because I'd just decided Tado was the system for me...

why don't you just switch it on and off manually then, like I said above unless the geofencing works 20 to 30 minutes away (which they don't) then there's little point using it to switch the heating on as no boiler is going to heat a house much in such a short time.

You can occasionally still get the V3 but you will be paying quite a bit more than the V3+

Usually plenty of V3 bridges on ebay. When I ended up with the v3+ I was looking to get one as I didn't want to pay a subscription.
Didn't need to as I don't pay anything.
Love tado personally. Thanks OP. Just bagged me a pair of horizontals. That's most of our house zoned now. Sweet.

Go for the Honeywell Evohome system. It's incredible, and you can get deals on the bay for about the same price you'd pay for the Tado. No monthly subscriptions, the communication between the radiator thermostats and the control unit is RF not wifi, and the app while basic is functional. I've had one installed for over a year and after some initial niggles with the placement of the boiler control were worked out, it's been flawless.

This is a good price for the Tado, heated.

have they changed it then as I though they just had 3 options of eco balanced or comfort with no option to change at what distances these kick in.

Not sure, it’s been like this for as long as I can remember. Your house is on a map in the middle of a circle and you just pull out the radius as far as you want, and it also says in metric or imperial how far it is.
Get v3 bridge on eBay or a v3 starter kit from Argos
Great deal on these, just what I needed for 2 more
Site said there were only 2 left in stock (vertical) when I ordered, ymmv
Remember both models do the same if you don’t mind the text the wrong way round which I don’t lol
Do you need the bridge to operate them remotely (ie away from the house)?

The Boss said it triggered about 15/20 minutes from me arriving. She doesn’t use the geofencing.

Also it goes from 14/15 to 17-18degrees in this time (2 radiators in living room).
Great deal, thanks op. Being needing one more to complete my setup. Had tado v3 for 1.5 years now and it's been great

You don't need to pay subscription, if you don't need those optional extra functions. It still will work perfectly fine.

I think you'll like the geofencing, as both of you can have an account linked to the same Tado hub. So if you're both home, the heating is on. If just one of you is home, it still remains on. But if both of you are out and about, then it'll switch to a "away mode".

You don't need to pay the subscription fee (£24.95 a year, a little over 2 quid a month) for the geofencing or open window detection to work -- that works without the subscription too. The difference is that without the subscription you will need to confirm it in the app. Ie "An open window was detected. Do you want to turn down the heat?" With the subscription, it simply does that automatically.

I pay for the subscription, as the savings and convenience more than offsets it. I've also found that the Tado app is a bit more intelligent about geofencing than other methods when it comes to more than one person in a household. So I've tied that feature into IFTTT to do other things in the house when we're away (or come back).
With a V2 bridge the extras in the subscription are included. Might be worth buying 1 from eBay. I have the V2 from a couple of years ago, automated geofencimg and open window detection. Tado keep asking if I want to pay a 1 off fee with no subscription for the V3+ app, I still don't see what I would gain even as a 1 off!
I've got a V1 (beta). Had it for 6 years. Awesome piece it kit. It runs all the bells and whistles flawlessly. V1 doesn't support these valves so thinking of getting a V2 bridge. I really don't see the point in getting anything above a V2 unless you want less features. There is no way I'm upgrading the app, even if it was free!
Trying to buy horizontal and saying no longer available

The Tado support is not good, and their approach to development is even worse. They don't listen to customer concerns at all and development has pretty much ground to a halt.

Nevertheless, despite being very disappointed with it in some of these respects, I'm happy to keep it because it solves a problem for me that I couldn't find another way to solve without investing in smart TRVs. My house is now just the right temperature in every room.

Regarding geofencing, are you using Apple? If so, you can achieve this using HomeKit automations without paying for the Tado subscription.
dimav8310/01/2020 19:05

True, I don't understand why people have a problem with this. Maintaining a service costs money. I would rather that the costs of the products and the services are segregated in this way, rather than bundling the service costs into the products or other revenue streams.

It also means that when product sales go down, there's less motivation for the provider (in this case Tado) to force obsolescence in their older products so that they can get more revenue. Potentially with a subscription fee, the products can last longer, even if you don't pay for the subscription.
