No, the subscription is optional, it just gives you a couple of extra automated features (automated geofencing (without the sub you have to manually confirm that you want the heating to change when you go out) and open window detection).

Yes. I'm not aware of anyone that has managed to get Tado to work without using the Tado servers. There is, for example, a Home Assistant integration but it still uses the Tado API for registering the TRVs.

No each TRV runs on 2 AA batteries.
