Tag Heuer Gents Carrera Calibre 7 Twin Time Automatic Watch - £1610 at Hugh Rice

This is a cracking deal! I’ve just ordered this as treat for myself!!

Was £2300 and now down to £1610 with free next day delivery. I know there will be the ‘COLD - my Casio is £9.99 and it tells the same time gang’ but don’t let that take anything away from this. It’s a helluva deal and that’s a fact.

Yes, it’s a an expensive watch but there’s a reason a Mercedes costs more than a Kia...

You don't need to justify the price tag to the HUKDers, you need to justify it to the wife though. Heat for the deal.
Is that not meant to be £1610 a huge price? Instead of £1610 at Hugh rice.
uktottys6 m ago

Cold from me, Tag is very overrated in my opinion.

A stupid reason to vote cold.
Serious question and certainly not meant as a wind-up.

Suggesting that the difference in price between a Mercedes and a Kia is because they are not the same (other than having a wheel in each corner) is valid. Using the same analogy, both this watch and a £2.99 watch tell the time, what are the bells and whistles that make this watch worth so much more - other than the "brand name"?

p.s. I have the same challenge working out why I ought to pay £1,000 for a mobile phone when a £10 has the same basic functionality - it makes phone calls.

Not a bad price and a nice looking watch only issue is they drop in value to fast better off buying a used Rolex or a Tudor Rolex hold there value if not go up !

Resale value of TH watches isn't great, unless it's a particularly desirable model, which this is not. I'd expect no more than abut 50% of the RRP.

I could write a lengthy piece that I believe to be true but that’s just my opinion.

You’re paying for the craftsmanship and quality as well as the feel of a luxury timepiece. I believe one is also paying to make themselves feel a bit special too.

I feel special when I have one of my dearer watches on. They’ll last years and years if looked after properly and that’s a guarantee, I personally bought an Omega Seamaster for £825 in 2004 and since then it’s kept perfect time and I’ve had two batteries in 13 years, I’d say that’s pretty good going. I will also add that I don’t wear it every day but that doesn’t change the fact that it’s a 13-year-old watch which I would now be able to sell for more than I actually purchased it for if I really wanted to...but I won’t!

£1000 phone? I bought the iPhone X outright and sold my 7 Plus and immediately recovered 60% of my outlay with that sale. I’ve switched to a SIM only plan now and that excess £400 will be saved over the next year or so with the money I’m paying now per month compared to what I was paying on contact £45pcm before against £17 now!

I would say I am a casual "watch guy", I own 6 I love but none break the £200 barrier, so I'm maybe not the best person to ask. For me, I admire the craftsmanship, reliability and the heritige of may of the big name makers; these watches will outlive me! I never wore watches when I was younger, but when I dropped onto an automatic peice for about £80, it blew me away. You could literally feel the quality which is a feeling I rarely get with any purchase these days. Also, for men at least, it's often hard to express our personaility and likes/dislikes in what we wear. I don't wear rings or anything, so me for wearing a watch I like as the one peice of jewellrey is a way of expressing myself.

I love my small collection of Seiko, Citizen and Orients and I am more than happy with these if I never by another. I have one for every occasion and I am not on the lookout for anything else in the immediate future. Having said that, one day I would love a Rolex and Omega which I would always wear with the idea it could be passed down to my future children.
Not only do I currently have 2 eyes and 2 wrists, I have previously used these in conjunction with watches to tell the time; so consider myself something of an expert on the subject.

I can confirm that this deal's particular product does in fact tell the time, and can be worn on your wrist - either wrist in fact.

I can also confirm that the product at the link below also has these 2 key features, but costs marginally less:

amazon.co.uk/Cas…91W

In conclusion, and as an expert, I would recommend that you purchase the latter - or maybe 2 if you want one for each wrist - and spend the rest on several holidays.

You're welcome!

Terrible - I like Tag but you should never buy one new - you can find second hand something with box and papers in mint condition and let the original owner take the hit.

Why?

Fashion brand, often use standard ETA movements, (not this one granted) lack of inspired design, many of their ETA movements can be found in Tissot, Raymond Weil and other Swiss factory's watches for a third of the price, I have Oris, Rolex, Omega, Tissot, Zenith, RW, Hamillton, Corum, Mondaine, Mont Blanc and many others, but TAG always seem a bit like a 3 series, same spec as a decent Mondeo, twice the price.

Assuming you actually wanted an answer to your question?

My £99 Seiko is the same age as your Omega and has also needed 2 batteries which I changed myself for about £2 The pair. It still keeps time perfectly. Sadly these watches cost more to change the battery than it costs to buy a Seiko. Everyone to their own but I don' see a need for just paying for a little name tag, excuse the pun.

I have mainly rolex and breitling and dot like omega. That has nothing to do with the price of the watch which is the cheapest around. That makes it hot in spite of your unreasonable snobbery.
My take about the accuracy of watches, err sorry, timepieces...you may or may not geddit

Not always about numbers. At one time I had 2 cars and 3 bikes. Sold them all apart from one. I still have a 1978 Moto Guzzi. Not fast. Not powerful. Not good suspension. Loved riding it, the sound, the feel.

I often like to wear old beaters. They will lose 3 min per day but that is just 'the way they are'. I also have a Casio that updates every night - but its a sterile unenjoyable watch. And I don't need to organise my life to within 2 mins usually per day.

Currently looking for a nice watch to add to the collection, around this price.

My problem with Tag seems to be that either the designs are too geeky (all about F1 and limited eds) or just a little bland (which arguably many will say is "smart / classy")

I'm ok with it being a bit bland, if perhaps there is something a bit unique about the movement inside.

But to me, this watch looks to have a fairly standard swiss ETA movement - so nothing too exciting there, except you will probably be able to see, through the glass back, "TAG" laser etched into the movement.

I'm going to say something really bold now which is: the Chinese can do all this (and not necessarily meaning fakes) at a fraction of the price - after all the ETA movement is only circa £5-£10.

I'm struggling to find a nice middle ground between what most of my collection is (standard/fine quartz and automatic movements) and what I would really like, like a Cartier Minute Repeater or a VC Moonphase!

I believe hamilton are no longer using Swiss movements so not sure if the same argument about Swiss craftmanship still applies to these..
If it was a writing implement I can fully understand the desire to fork out decent sums of money, for that actually DOES make a difference to the writing you produce.

I also agree with expensive shoes and shirts and suits as they definitely hang and look and feel better.
Same goes for a lot of products such as cameras, televisions, Hi-fi (Especially) Etc.

All of those items mentioned serve the buyer well in the end result BUT a watch?

Funnily enough a lot of men seem to have a fascination with nice watches (i have about 4-5, one of which is a Junghans Radio Controlled) but to tell me you feel the difference between a 1k+ watch and a sub £500 watch I struggle with.

Know what, I wear a £25 watch on my wrist 24/7 and I cant feel the cheapness. I actually dont feel it at all.
99.9% of my life I am not aware of its presence.

Mind you, I also dont get admiring glances from those around me when i do display it.

If you want to buy a Tag, then this is a good deal. Heat.
I think for £1,600, you can buy a better watch.

But heat from a deal perspective
