The last time I went to France on a day trip it was a coach trip and nobody checked out passports on the way out in either UK or France. On the way back the British checked them at Calais and one of the passengers did not have a passport, he thought you did not need one for France! LOL. He was allowed back in.

I don't drive and I'm on my own. I'll take a toy car instead...

my husband forgot to renew his passport once and had to borrow his brother's one for a day trip. Customs didn't notice.

This deal runs out in 20 minutes

probably

OK if you live near Dover as Petrol prices are so high, but then the exchange rate is still poor

I don't actually want any dates - I was just trying to see if you could book a £1 day trip from Dover and a £1 day trip from Calais so you can have a longer stay (not that the dates for this fit in with my plan to do that anyway!). I tried most of the dates in that range (excluding the specified exclusions) and it said that everytime. Presumably it was just an error.

Day trips are always much cheaper than longer return tickets/One way tickets and they make sure you can't fiddle it. Allegedly if you aren't on the boat coming home within x hours your card gets charged. Various ideas have been dreamed up about paying with a prepay card etc but I've never heard of a way round it.

So the lesson is, you don't need a passport if you are going to France?

You do need a passport when entering or leaving the UK.

Prior to leaving Dover, you may get it checked by UK Customs and PAF (Police Aux Frontier).

On the way back in France you will have it checked by the Police Aux Frontier again and also UK Immigration. If you dont have your passport, you'll find yourself stuck at the control for quite some time while they carry out checks and interview you to establish you are a British citizen before being allowed back in.

Used to be a passport wasn't needed - just a pass.

Site is down due to heavy traffic for me. Just a heads up it's rammed down the port today, mostly Dutch going back after the holidays. Atleast it is with DFDS, working here atm.

And you will need a passport, although you can leave the country with a driver's license. Just may have trouble getting back.

cite europe just the other side of the channel is a nice place to go for a day trip - were not far from dover and have popped over for the day before.

The 1.28euro wine was excellent!!

As a foot passenger, do you get stranded in Calais port? How do I get to Calais when the ferry arrives?

Original Poster

there's a frequent bus, goes to the shopping centre or centre ville, might even be a port bus. We've walked back in the past although a good 20 minutes from the shops to the check in and not recommended.

Good place to buy bread as well. Tastes so different to the supermarket crap you get over here. (And pain au chocolat, buy the one with buerre in though )

I'm not sure, I think I'll stick to chartering this
myleander.co.uk/

It's only £495,000 per week (helicopter extra).

Could we fit 500,000 HUKD bods on it do you think?

A cheeky little number, an initial subtle flavour of oak and forest fruit with a finish reminiscent of turps substitute.

There’s also a Second World War museum situated in a bunker which was once a command post for the German navy. Now it contains a magnificent display of military objects, uniforms and arms. The museum concentrates on the history of Calais and its surrounding area from 1940 until the liberation in 1944.
Take a bracing walk on the long pale sandy beach at Escalles and look up at the mighty Cap Blanc-Nez cliffs, an area of outstanding natural beauty. The White Cliffs of Dover are just 34 km away and are visible in clear weather.
Wednesday and Saturday mornings place d'Armes and Saturday mornings place Crèvecoeur.
The main shopping streets are Boulevard Jacquard, Boulevard Lafayette and Rue Royale. There you will find La Maison du Fromage, Rue Saint André ; Le Bar à Vin, Place d’Armes and Royal Dentelle the Calais lace shop.
