No catches - just get yourself some paint to do the shell and 8 AAs for the controller.

* Multiple cars on 2.4ghz can run at the same time, the radio itself will find a clear channel in the frequency range every time it's switched on - eliminating "run away" interference!

The Lunch Box Reissue

Until recently, genuine original Lunchboxes new in the box sold for hundreds, the re-release has only minor changes.

Grab Your Lunch Box and Let's Go to the Park!

Another one of Tamiya’s classic creations, the R/C Lunch Box (1st released, 1987) was loved for its camp appearance as much as for its R/C performance. The boxy minivan body raised up over monster truck wheels ensure that this R/C van will get attention anywhere you choose to drive it. Use the sides of the van as a canvas to paint your own original designs for the ultimate conversation piece!

2WD Chassis Mounted on Big 115mm Diameter tyres

The durable and easy-to-assemble 2WD chassis employs box type frame, front swing arm independent and rear rolling rigid suspension. Big 115mm diameter tyres offer dynamic running on even the toughest of surfaces. Sealed gearbox protects diff gear from dirt and sand during off-road driving. Rear mounted wheelie bar enables wild stunt driving.

Notes from the Spanner Man: This model is 100% identical to the original except for a slight change to the stickers (now precut), strengthened steering rods and the mechanical speed control having been deleted from the kit.
For those unaware this is a kit to build yourself not a ready to run kit. I bought this my son last year and it in one of the best RC items he has. Great durability and fantastic fun - well my 15 year old thinks so anyway!

Very Durable, its not hard to build either and thats part of the fun IMO

(You need to add battery at bottom of screen, other choices are available)
Really good deal :-) and if your a member of tamiyaclub.com/ you should get an extra 5 or 10% off
I can remember begging my ma and pa for this and looking longingly over the counter at Beatties at this and the Midnight Pumpkin.

Never got any of them though, got some cheapo Niko buggy instead.
Sideysid, the same happened to me :-(
I had to make do with a nikko quad bike from Toys R Us which ran slower off the rechargeable NiCads I was forced to use, managed to get a second-hand Hornet in the end:)
I guess the batteries/charger arent lipo and the motor a simple silver can (what id expect for a bundle this price), but at least thats a fairly good brushed esc and 2.4ghz tx.rx! Should be easy to swap out another brushed motor for a bit more power!

One note, those batteries will not give you long run times, youll be charging up all 3 to get any decent length of play time!
Can remember someone on my street having one of these, Was the envy of every lad for miles!

yes 1800 is not great but you do get 3 of them.
A 3000 battery is included in the ready built bundle I posted above.
I was going to get one for my 9 year old so I dont want it stupid fast.

If I was just going for speed this is a deal in itself

However its easily breakable in the wrong hands.

Really interested in one of these for my 10 year old.

I know it's just an indication, but do you know what an 1800 battery would equate to in terms of running time. I assume I can always buy a 3000 battery at a later stage too.
this is what we did before gaming...... i had a bigwig, a hornet and a grasshoper....those were the days

Well I'm just about fed up with gaming console for my son. It's a great thing to take away from him when he behaves poorly, but after having a 2 week console ban it was clear to me that he didn't miss it as much as either of us thought. I'm looking for outdoor activities like this to keep him busy
wow i remember when this came out 1st time around (my folks could never afford it but my mate got one in the range - his was the midnight pumpkin which was a pickup truck but on the same chassis i think).

This is a cracking entry level RC car and far more fun imo that the "proper" racing ones.

Much prefer the latest Black … Much prefer the latest Black edition.http://www.goldstarstockists.net/live/catalog/tamiya-58546-the-black-lunch-box-lunchbox-lbx-kit-beginners-deal-radio-control-rc-car-kit-lbx-p-51180.html

Looks nice, but not sure if controller is the same, also only 1 battery and an overnight charger...
thanks djjinx - do you know if the speed truggy would be any good on grass? Heated
WOW .. Lunchbox!!

Memories of scanning and lusting after them in the Argos catalogue come flooding back! Not thought of Beaties in ages ..

I too had the Nikko RC ...
This is a excellent present. i would replace all the ball bearings in it to proper metal ones.
painting the shell is a bit of a pain and you need to be in a properly vented area, as the paints are pretty nasty
also this is for outdoors use only
the speed and tork on these is way superior to a nikko. you can do wheelies and nose stops.

down side is the batteries last for about 10-15 mins and back in the day the trickle chargers i had, took 15 hours to charge.
fingers crossed they have quick chargers now. the remote also takes a lot of bundle double AA batteries.
also invest in a safety cut off. because if the batteries in the transmitter die then the car if it was going at the time charges off.
i lost my first manta ray to a car that way :-(

You can add ballraces for £5
It comes with a 2 hour charger and 3 batteries so ~45 mins runtime??

It would be fine on grass but not in the wet!

That thing is mega fast though and perhaps not for begginers
Great price but IMO you can pick up a 2nd hand nitro hyper 7 for less than this, and its much more fun.
Great price, remember having a tamiya "thunder dragon" plus also paying out £200 for bigwig kit without any radio gear half the enjoyment was the building of the kits
I still have my original grasshopper from the 80's and its still in full working order :-) Loved these kits as a kid!
I brought the midnight pumpkin re release a few years back. Good fun handles grass and bumps in my garden easily. I would stick with the stock motor though, or you'll be constantly rolling it and poping wheelies. There are much better chassis for speed and handling nowadays but that's not the point of this kit.

Does look good
Thank you everyone for promoting and discussing our deal here - I just heard about the hotukdeals listing from someone on this thread who just called us to order.

Due to interest, I've just added super bundles for the Black and Gold Lunch Box to the web site - it's the 25th Anniversary this year and the Black model has just been launched to celebrate. The Gold and Black are an extra £15 unfortunately, so perhaps not quite so hot, but on the up side don't need painting!

Is it possible to swap out the 3 batteries for 1 better battery as part of the deal??

It's slightly tricky - the charger with these packages won't go much over a 3000 battery, which rules out the high capacity cells - but what we could do is supply 1 x 3000 and 1 x 1800 for the same price - although overall, the run time will be longer with 3 x 1800. Anyone needing this combination can leave a note at checkout.

well im now 36 and i also drooled over the tamiya's at beaties in manchester when i was about 14, i wanted the vanquish all though i would have settled for any.

if i had a few bob to squander i would buy one now lol.....sounds sad for my age but they are great !
Had one of these as a kid when i was about 12, our little boy is nearly 3, do you think I could get away with suggesting this as a present? :-)
Would this be a good first build?

excellent,cheers ...gonna go for it!
Still one of my favourite fun to drive radio controlled vehicles.
I like the Gold limited edition version
Only one 540 motor? Guess I was spoiled with my Bullhead!
I have a fair few RC cars, (I race them) but I also have a lunchbox which is about 20 years old and most sundays its bashing about on the park. I stripped it down and rebuilt it with my 8yo son. They are very simple to build, and there are lots of cheap spares and modifications you can have for them

I would recommend the bearing set for £5, this will give you longer running times (the drive train will be smoother)/
